The control panel is where you and the lift meet: the buttons, the indicator lights, the status display, sometimes the key switch. When it misbehaves, the whole lift feels untrustworthy — and rightly so, because control faults range from trivial to serious. The important thing is to stop using the lift until the fault is understood, especially if its behaviour has become unpredictable.
How control panel faults show up
Common presentations include: one button dead while the others work; buttons that need pressing hard or repeatedly; indicator lights that flash in patterns you have never seen; a display showing a fault code; controls that work only sometimes or only in one direction; the panel going completely dark with the lift otherwise fine; and, most seriously, controls that trigger movement on their own or behave erratically. Each presentation narrows the diagnosis differently — a single dead button suggests a switch, flashing lights usually mean the lift is reporting a specific condition, and erratic behaviour points to wiring, a board or the power supply.
The causes behind them
A single faulty button or worn switch membrane is the simplest case. Beyond that: corrosion or looseness in the connectors behind the panel; a wiring loom damaged where it flexes with the carriage; moisture from cleaning or condensation getting into the panel; a failing control board; a weak battery supply causing brownouts that confuse the electronics; and interference from the lift's own failing components. Some of these are quick fixes; some are component replacements; all of them are engineer work.
What not to do
Do not open the panel — the manuals of every manufacturer draw a line at user servicing beyond batteries, fuses and cleaning, and control panels sit firmly beyond it. Do not keep pressing buttons on a lift that responds unpredictably, and never ride a lift whose controls behave erratically. If the lift trips the electrics or smells of burning, stop entirely and book urgently. If someone is aboard when controls fail mid-journey, keep them safe, comfortable and calm, call 999 if they are in pain or distress, and use a manual release only strictly per the manufacturer's instructions by a confident person — never climb under, push or force a suspended lift.
How we diagnose a panel fault
We start with the reported behaviour and any fault codes the lift displays, then test methodically: the supply to the panel, each button's output, the loom and connectors behind it, moisture or corrosion signs, and the control board itself where the evidence points there. We cross-check against the sensors — because a panel that seems faulty is sometimes correctly reporting a fault elsewhere, such as a footplate sensor or a seat interlock, and treating the panel would miss the real problem. Only when the cause is proven do we quote the repair in full for your approval, using manufacturer-approved parts, with parts costs shown separately.
Repairs and honest advice
Switch membranes, connectors and looms are usually repairable economically. Control boards vary: some are replaceable, some are obsolete on older lifts, and where a board is unobtainable we will say so and discuss realistic options, including a replacement lift, rather than take money for a repair that cannot last. We never promise a part's availability or a repair duration before diagnosis.
Aftercare
Keep drinks, cleaning sprays and plants away from the panel, clean it with a dry or barely damp cloth only, and report any new flashing pattern or odd behaviour immediately — early reports catch connector and moisture problems before they become board failures. An annual service exercises every control and connector as routine.
Booking
Tell us the make and model and describe exactly what the panel does — or send a photo of any fault display. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged at an hourly rate that depends on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with parts quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Buttons that do nothing, lights that flash oddly, or a panel that behaves unpredictably all point to a control problem — the kind of fault that needs systematic testing rather than guesswork. Our engineers diagnose the panel, its wiring and the board behind it, and explain everything before quoting.
What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service
4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews
Proper job, no upselling
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes
Fine in the end
The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.
Job: Stair Lift Service
Would use again
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about control panel fault
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is there any DIY maintenance for the control panel?
Only what the manual supports: keeping it clean with a dry cloth and making sure nothing liquid gets near it. Opening the panel, testing its wiring or attempting board repairs is engineer work — control panels sit firmly beyond the user-serviceable list, and opening one can make diagnosis harder.
What do you check behind a faulty panel?
We test the supply to the panel, every button's output, the loom and connectors, signs of moisture or corrosion, and the control board where indicated. We also cross-check the lift's sensors, because an apparently faulty panel is sometimes correctly reporting a fault elsewhere.
The panel flashed a code I've never seen and the lift stopped mid-journey — what now?
First the person: keep them safe, comfortable and calm, and call 999 if they are in pain or distress. Manual release only strictly per the manufacturer's instructions by a confident person — never climb under, push or force a suspended lift. Note the code if you can and book a diagnosis; the lift should not be used again first.
Can a control fault make the lift move by itself?
A failing board, damaged loom or moisture in the panel can cause unpredictable behaviour, which is why erratic controls mean stop using the lift immediately. If your lift has ever moved without a button being pressed, treat that as urgent and do not ride it until an engineer has checked it.
How much will the repair cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. After diagnosis we quote the full cost of the work for your approval before starting, and any parts — a board, switch or loom — are quoted separately.
