Why Pressure Loss Stops the Heating
Modern boilers monitor pressure and refuse to fire below a minimum, usually around half to one bar depending on the model. That protection exists because a heat exchanger without enough water can overheat and distort. So when the gauge drops, the boiler locks out, the display shows a fault, and the house goes cold. The pressure loss is the cause; the lockout is the symptom.
Pressure can be lost in several ways: a leak on the circuit, a relief valve that will not seat, a failed expansion vessel, a filling loop that was never properly closed after the last top-up, or a component inside the boiler. Occasionally the gauge or sensor is at fault. The pattern of loss, and whether it holds after refilling, tells us which.
Refilling Safely
If your manual describes a filling loop, refilling to the cold pressure figure is a reasonable thing to try. Open the loop slowly, watch the gauge, and stop at the specified figure rather than filling to the top of the band. Then bleed the radiators, because refilling introduces air, and check the pressure again once the system is cold. Close the loop firmly afterwards.
Do not refill a hot system, do not leave the loop open, and do not keep repeating the exercise daily. If pressure will not hold for more than a few days, stop topping up and book a visit. Fresh water carries oxygen and scale, and repeated topping up accelerates corrosion of the pump, valves and heat exchanger.
What We Check
We confirm the gauge reading and compare it with the boiler's own display, then check the filling loop for a passing valve. We inspect visible joints, radiator valves and the boiler's connections, test the expansion vessel charge, and check the relief valve discharge for signs of lifting. If pressure holds after refilling, we run the heating through a full cycle and watch for a fall as it cools.
Where the loss continues, we isolate sections of the circuit to establish which leg is losing water. That approach is slower than guessing but far more reliable than opening floors at random.
Getting the System Running Again
If the only problem was low pressure and the system holds, refilling and bleeding restores normal operation, and we reset any fault by cycling the boiler as the manual allows. If a component has failed, we repair or replace it: a valve tail, a relief valve, an expansion vessel or a water-side boiler component. Where the boiler's gas-side parts are implicated, we stop and recommend a Gas Safe registered engineer, because Maintenance Men does not carry out gas work.
If It Will Not Hold
A system that loses pressure within hours has a significant leak, and repeated refilling is not a solution. It can also indicate a failed heat exchanger or a relief valve discharging continuously. In that case we isolate the system safely, explain what is required, and quote the repair. If parts need ordering, the system stays off rather than being run with pressure that will not hold.
What We Cannot Promise
We cannot promise that a refill solves a system that is losing water; it restores operation, not the cause. We also cannot always find a hidden leak in one visit, particularly under a solid floor. And we cannot guarantee that a boiler which has locked out has no other fault until it has run a full cycle, which is why we test before leaving.
Safety
Do not run a boiler with the gauge below the minimum, and do not bypass a pressure switch or fault. Do not open the boiler casing. If the relief valve is discharging continuously, switch the boiler off and let it cool. For a gas smell, do not touch switches or use flames; ventilate if you can, leave, and call 0800 111 999. If a CO alarm sounds, get everyone outside and call 0800 111 999, and 999 if anyone has symptoms.
Preventing the Next Lockout
Once the cause is fixed, note the cold pressure monthly and check it before the heating season starts. Keep the filling loop closed, and have the inhibitor level checked when the system is serviced. A magnetic filter captures the debris that damages components and causes some pressure losses in the first place.
Book a Pressure Failure Diagnosis
Tell us your boiler make and model, the fault code, what the gauge reads and how quickly pressure falls. We cover the West Midlands and may have same-day availability, though we never promise it. We take the booking fee up front, hourly labour varies with how soon you want us there, the full cost being quoted and approved before work starts.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A heating system that shuts down after losing pressure usually gives clear clues: a low gauge, a fault code, and radiators that never warm. Refilling can get it running again, but if pressure fell once it will often fall again. We will restore operation, test whether the system holds, and find the reason for the loss rather than leaving you to top it up indefinitely.

Questions people ask about heating system failure due to pressure loss
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I just refill and restart the boiler?
If your manual describes the filling loop, refilling to the cold figure and bleeding the radiators is reasonable. If pressure falls again within days, stop and book a visit, because repeated topping up damages the system.
What causes pressure loss that stops the heating?
A leak on the circuit, a relief valve that will not reseat, a failed expansion vessel, a filling loop left open, or a water-side boiler component. Occasionally the pressure sensor is faulty. We test each in turn.
Is it safe to keep resetting the boiler?
Resetting occasionally after a refill is normal. Repeatedly resetting a boiler that keeps locking out is not: it may be running with insufficient water or have a fault that needs diagnosis. Leave it off and book a visit.
Do you repair the boiler itself?
We repair water-side and electrical components such as pumps, valves and seals. We do not carry out gas work and are not Gas Safe registered, so gas, flue and combustion faults are referred to a registered engineer.
How much will it cost?
The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us. The full cost is quoted and approved before work begins. Any parts, such as a valve or vessel, are identified and quoted separately.
