When the fuse board trips the moment the hob switches on, the temptation is to flip it back and try again. Understandable — but each reset is another pass of fault current through wiring and components that are already telling you something is wrong. The circuit is doing its job; the right response is to find out why, not to overrule it.
Why hobs trip circuits
A cooker circuit is protected by devices designed to detect exactly the kinds of faults a failing hob produces. The most common is leakage to earth from a degrading element — as elements age, the insulation between the heating wire and the casing breaks down, and enough current leaks to trip an RCD. Moisture is another classic: a boil-over or over-enthusiastic cleaning that pushes liquid into the hob's internals can trip the circuit immediately. Beyond those, burnt or damaged connectors, chafed internal wiring, a fault in the isolator or the circuit itself, and occasionally a failing control board all produce the same visible symptom.
What the engineer tests
The visit starts at the consumer unit and works toward the hob: which device trips, how quickly, and whether other appliances on the circuit are involved. We test the circuit's insulation and earth integrity, then test the hob itself — elements for earth leakage, wiring and connectors for damage, and electronics where relevant. That sequence matters, because replacing a hob when the circuit is at fault (or vice versa) wastes your money. Diagnosis is completed and explained before any repair is priced.
The repair options
An element with earth leakage is replaced with the correct part for your model, quoted separately from labour. Moisture-related trips sometimes need nothing more than thorough drying and a retest — we'll tell you honestly if that's the case. Damaged wiring or connectors are repaired or replaced as found. If the protective device itself is faulty or the circuit has a genuine defect, we quote the electrical repair instead and explain why the hob isn't the culprit.
Between now and the visit
Stop using the hob and leave it switched off at the isolator — the fault is in the appliance or its supply, and neither should be exercised until checked. Don't reset the breaker 'just to test it' beyond once; if it trips again, stop. And don't dry the hob out with a heater or hairdryer aimed into its vents — that's not how moisture faults are safely resolved.
If your hob is gas, note that gas burners, valves and supply faults are gas work. Maintenance Men is not Gas Safe registered and never carries out gas work; gas-side problems belong with a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer, whom we can recommend.
The moisture question, answered properly
Moisture-related trips are the one cause where time sometimes helps — but 'sometimes' is doing real work in that sentence, and only testing proves it. If a spill started the problem, we'll dry-out and retest under controlled conditions rather than leaving that judgment to chance. If the trip persists, the fault is electrical and needs the full diagnosis. Either way you get a definitive answer rather than a fortnight of resetting the breaker and hoping — which, to be plain about it, is the one approach that makes things genuinely worse.
Booking and what to tell us
Contact us with the hob's brand and model, which breaker or RCD trips, whether it trips immediately or after a few minutes of cooking, and anything that preceded the fault — a spill, a clean, a storm. Those details genuinely shorten diagnosis. Book by phone or website; the booking fee is paid when you book, the hourly rate depends on how soon you need us, and any repair proceeds only after you've approved the full written quote.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A breaker that trips every time you switch the hob on is a warning, not an inconvenience to reset and ignore. The trip means the circuit is protecting you from a genuine fault, and the cause needs finding before someone resets it one time too many. We trace it properly and quote the fix before any work starts.

Questions people ask about fuse tripping when hob on
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is it dangerous to keep resetting a tripping breaker?
Yes, repeatedly. A breaker trips because it detects a fault — often leakage to earth or excess current. Resetting again and again risks a fault that worsens into overheating or fire. Stop using the hob and get it diagnosed.
What typically makes a hob trip the electrics?
Common causes are a failing element leaking to earth, moisture or spillovers inside the hob, damaged wiring or burnt connectors, a faulty RCD or circuit problem, or water ingress from cleaning. Testing finds which rather than guessing.
Can spilt liquid really cause this?
It can — liquid reaching internal connections or an element causes leakage currents that trip an RCD, and it can sometimes dry out. But a trip that persists after a thorough drying-out period needs proper testing, not hope.
Do you replace the breaker or RCD too?
If testing shows the protective device or circuit is the problem rather than the hob, we explain that and quote the electrical work needed, including replacing a faulty device if that's the genuine cause.
What does it cost to diagnose and repair?
A booking fee is paid when you book and the hourly rate depends on how soon you need the visit. Diagnosis is explained before any repair; the full cost is quoted and approved by you beforehand, with parts quoted separately.
