A burning smell from a hob is the appliance equivalent of a smoke alarm going off once — easy to explain away, unwise to ignore. The smell means something is getting hotter than it should, and in a hob the candidates are connections, elements and controls: exactly the components whose failures can escalate. Our advice is simple: stop using it, isolate it, and get it assessed properly.
The innocent explanation — and why you can't assume it
Burnt-on spillovers and baked-on residue do produce burning smells, especially the first time a hob is used hard after a while. It's the one benign cause. The problem is that overheating connections, failing elements and degrading insulation produce the same smell, and the only way to tell them apart is inspection and testing. Hoping for the innocent explanation isn't a diagnosis.
Where the smell typically originates
Inside the hob, terminals and connectors loosen or char over years of thermal cycling, and a resistive connection generates its own heat with every use — the smell usually appears early in a cooking session and strengthens as things warm up. Elements can degrade and run hot locally. Boards and insulation can overheat. And sometimes the source isn't the hob at all but its supply: a connection at the isolator or behind the unit, producing the smell the hob gets blamed for. That's why our inspection covers both.
How we trace it
The engineer inspects the supply connections and isolator first, then opens the assessment of the hob: scorched or discoloured components, resistive connections, element behaviour under load, and the control system. Where it's safe and useful, careful powered observation reproduces the smell under controlled conditions. The result is a specific answer — component, connection or residue — with the repair options priced before anything is agreed.
The repair and what it involves
Charred connections are repaired with the damaged material made safe, and their cause addressed so it doesn't recur. Failed elements are replaced with the correct part for your model, quoted separately from labour. Board faults get an honest comparison against the hob's age and value — we'll say plainly when replacement is the better spend, and can quote fitting a new hob if that's your decision.
Safety between now and the visit
Leave the hob off at the isolator and don't be tempted to run it 'to see if the smell comes back'. Clear the cupboard beneath it of flammables, and don't store anything on the hob surface. If you ever see smoke or flames, isolate only if it's safe to do so and call the fire service — a smell is a warning, smoke is an emergency. If your hob is gas and you smell gas itself rather than burning, that's the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999, not a booking — ventilate if safe, turn the gas off at the meter only if safely accessible and you know how, leave the property and call from outside. Maintenance Men is not Gas Safe registered and doesn't carry out gas work; gas-side faults go to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer.
Distinguishing the smells that matter
Two smells from a hob mean different things. A burnt-dust or hot-plastic smell that fades after a clean and a short run is usually residue or a new appliance bedding in. A persistent electrical smell that returns every session, strengthens with use, or appears with trips or flickering lights is the one that needs an engineer promptly. If the smell comes with any scorching, discolouration or heat beyond the cooking surface, stop using the hob entirely. When you book, describe which kind you're noticing — it directs the inspection from the first minute.
Booking
Contact us with the hob's brand and model, when the smell occurs, how it behaves, and anything else you've noticed — trips, heat, discolouration. Book by phone or website; the booking fee is paid when you book, the hourly rate depends on how soon you need us, and we'd suggest booking promptly for a burning smell rather than watching it. No repair starts until you've approved the full written quote.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A burning smell from a hob is the fault that most deserves a same-week visit. It usually means something electrical is overheating — a connection, an element or a control — and faults like these can worsen with every use. We trace the source safely, diagnose properly and quote the repair before starting.

Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about burning smell from hob
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
What should I do right now if my hob smells of burning?
Stop using the hob, switch it off at the isolator, and don't use it again until it's been assessed. If you see smoke or flames, isolate only if safe to do so and call the fire service. A persistent burning smell needs an engineer promptly, not observation.
Where does the smell usually come from?
Overheating connections or terminals, a failing element, insulation that's degrading, or food residue and spillovers burning off. Residue is the harmless explanation — but it can only be confirmed by inspection, not by hoping.
Could the smell be from the wiring behind the hob?
Possibly — a resistive connection at the isolator or behind the hob produces the same smell. We inspect both the appliance and its supply connections, because a wiring fault is exactly the kind that shouldn't be missed.
What if my hob is gas?
A burning smell from a gas hob can still be electrical, but gas-side and combustion faults are gas work — Maintenance Men is not Gas Safe registered and doesn't carry out gas work. If you smell gas itself, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 immediately; otherwise we'd refer gas faults to a trusted Gas Safe engineer.
How is the visit priced?
A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the engineer. Diagnosis is explained first; the full repair cost is quoted and approved by you before work starts, with parts quoted separately.
