Fixings rarely come loose for no reason. Usually one of three things has happened: the original fixing was wrong for the wall — a standard plug pushed into crumbly plaster or hollow board; the wall material around the fixing has broken down; or the fixture has been loaded beyond what it was ever fixed for. Understanding which is the truth before grabbing a screwdriver is what separates a refix that lasts from one that fails again in a fortnight.
What we commonly refix
Towel rails and radiator brackets, curtain poles and blinds, mirror plates, shelving brackets, coat hooks, cup hooks, toilet-roll holders, wall cabinets that have started to sag at one corner. The symptom is the same — movement when the item is used — but the causes differ, and so do the repairs.
The assessment: why did it fail?
We start by taking the fixture down or supporting it safely, then examining three things. First, the failed fixing itself: is the plug intact, has it spun in the hole, has the screw sheared or stripped? Second, the wall behind: solid masonry, plasterboard on studs, or dot-and-dab board with a gap behind the skim — each accepts fixings differently, and each has different strong spots. Third, the hole it came out of: often the plaster around a failed fixing is crumbled or enlarged, and screwing back into it as-is simply repeats the failure.
How the refix is done
If the wall around the hole is damaged, we repair it first — a filler or patch that sets hard, given time to cure, so the new fixing has something to grip. Then the fixture goes back with fixings chosen for the actual wall construction: a correct-diameter plug in solid masonry, a cavity or toggle-type anchor where there is a void behind board, a fixing that reaches the frame in a stud wall, and a screw length matched to the load. We finish by loading the fixture the way you use it — pulling the towel rail, swinging on the pole's weight — rather than testing it with a gentle wiggle.
Honest limitations
Not every wall accepts a fixing at the spot you want, and we will say so. If the wall is too weak at that point, or the item is simply too heavy for a sensible fixing there, we will discuss repositioning, a different fixing type, or additional support rather than driving something in and hoping. If the fixture itself is cracked or stripped — a common outcome when things hang loose for a while — repair may need a replacement part, which you may need to supply or we can identify and quote separately. And if pulling the fixture off reveals something unexpected — significant wall damage, suspected asbestos-containing old materials, damp — we stop and discuss it before going further.
Preparation and aftercare
Have the fixture's screws if you have them, and tell us the item's weight if it is heavy — shelves and cabinets especially. After refixing, avoid overloading past what the wall can sensibly carry, and mention anything that starts to move again promptly; an early refix is always cheaper than a repair after it drops.
Booking
Same-day visits may be available for straightforward refixes. You pay a booking fee when you book, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts. Repair materials beyond basic plugs and screws are identified at assessment and quoted separately.
Where a fitting has come loose more than once, that history matters. We would rather change the fixing type than repeat the same plug-and-screw cycle for the third time — sometimes that means a slightly different anchor, sometimes a screw that reaches further into the wall, and sometimes a small wall repair before the item goes back.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A towel rail that wobbles or a curtain pole that sags is annoying, but it is also a warning — the fixing behind it has failed, and it will only get worse. We find out why it came loose, put right the damage in the wall, and refit it with fixings that actually suit what the wall is made of.

Questions people ask about loose wall fixture repair
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I just tighten the screw again myself?
If it grips firmly and the fixture stops moving, possibly yes. But if it spins, pulls out again, or the wall around the hole is crumbled, tightening will not fix it — the fixing and the wall need attention. Repeatedly cranking a screw into a failing hole often makes the eventual repair bigger.
What do you inspect when you come out?
We examine the failed fixing, the condition of the hole and surrounding wall, and what the wall is actually made of behind the plaster. Then we explain why it failed, what fixing type suits the wall, and what the repair will involve before starting.
Is there a weight limit on what you can refix?
Yes — the wall's construction sets the limit, not our willingness. A solid masonry wall takes more than a plasterboard partition, and heavy items may need fixings into studs or additional support. If the item genuinely cannot be carried safely at that spot, we will discuss alternatives rather than fit something that will fail.
Do I need to provide replacement screws or plugs?
Usually no — a working handyman carries a range of common plugs and fixings. If the fixture needs a specific manufacturer part or unusual hardware, we will identify exactly what is needed and it can be supplied by you or quoted separately before the visit.
How much does a loose fixture refix cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit — same-day availability is usually at a different rate to a planned visit. Before any work starts, we quote the full cost for the agreed repair and you approve it. Extra materials, if needed, are quoted separately.
