A dishwasher that has become noticeably noisier is telling you something has changed. Bearings, bushes and mountings wear slowly; debris arrives suddenly. The character of the noise, and the point in the cycle where it appears, are the two most useful pieces of information.
Describe the noise precisely
- Rattling or clattering during wash: often a spray arm striking something, a loose item in the rack, or debris in the pump.
- Grinding or growling during drain: the drain pump impeller hitting debris, or a worn bearing.
- Whining that rises and falls: the wash pump under load, or cavitation from restricted water.
- Banging or knocking: water hammer from the inlet valve closing, or a loose hose touching a cabinet.
- Vibration through the floor: levelling, a missing foot, or the machine touching a worktop.
- A single loud crack then quiet: something has broken or come loose, and the fault may now be different.
Start with the free checks
Empty the machine and spin both spray arms by hand. A rattling arm is often one that has come loose from its hub and is fouling the rack or the tub. Check the racks for a broken tine or a piece of glass caught underneath. Check the filter, since debris in the sump gets picked up by the pump and produces a rattle.
Then check the machine is level and stable. Push the top corner gently; a machine that rocks is not sitting on all four feet, and that alone can transmit noise through the floor and units.
What wear sounds like
A worn wash pump bearing produces a low growl that gets worse over weeks and is loudest during the wash, when the pump is under load. A worn drain pump bearing shows during drain, which is a short burst at intervals. Worn spray arm bushes produce a tick or scrape as the arm turns.
These are progressive faults. If the noise has been building for months, wear is likely. If it arrived overnight, debris or a loose part is more likely.
Cavitation and restricted flow
A pump starved of water makes a distinctive harsh, gravelly noise. Causes include a blocked filter, a partly closed inlet valve, a restricted fill and low water level. The noise often appears at the start of the wash and settles once the level stabilises. This is worth checking before any pump replacement, because a starved pump that is replaced will starve the new one too.
What we do
We run the machine through a cycle and listen at each stage, which locates the noise to wash, drain, fill or spin. Then we inspect the corresponding component: pump impeller for debris and play, arm bushes for wear, mountings and feet, and the water level during fill. Where a bearing is worn, the component is replaced rather than repaired, since bearings in these pumps are not serviceable.
Parts and honesty
Pumps are model-specific to varying degrees. Some are widely available, some are not, and a machine with a worn wash pump on an old chassis may not justify the cost. We quote after identification and will tell you if the arithmetic does not favour a repair.
We will not promise that a noise disappears after a clean; sometimes it does, sometimes the wear is already too far gone.
Safety
Anything involving the pump requires power and water isolation, and only where both are safely accessible. If the noise is accompanied by a burning smell, tripping electrics or water at the base, stop using the machine. A grinding pump left running can damage the impeller and the housing, turning a cheap fix into an expensive one.
Aftercare
After the repair we run a full cycle and listen at each stage, then check the machine is level and stable. If the cause was debris, check the filter before each of the next few washes. If a mounting was the issue, confirm the machine no longer transmits vibration into the floor.
Booking
Tell us what the noise sounds like, when in the cycle it happens, and whether it started suddenly or gradually. Book online with the brand and model, pay the booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Dishwashers are not silent, and a change in sound is easy to miss until it becomes obvious. Where the noise occurs in the cycle matters: a rattle during wash points at the arms or the pump, a grind during drain points at the drain pump, and a buzz throughout points at mounting or a failing motor. Describing the noise accurately saves time.

Questions people ask about dishwasher making loud noise
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is there anything I can check myself?
Yes. Empty the machine, spin the spray arms by hand, check the racks for broken tines or trapped glass, clean the filter, and check the machine does not rock on the floor. Those cover several common causes.
How do you find where the noise comes from?
By running a cycle and listening at each stage. Noise during wash points at the wash pump or arms; noise during drain points at the drain pump; noise at fill can mean cavitation from restricted water.
Could a blocked filter cause the noise?
It can. A starved pump makes a harsh gravelly sound, and a filter full of debris can put material into the impeller. Clearing it is cheap and worth doing before any pump is considered.
Is it safe to keep using a noisy machine?
For a while, but a grinding pump can damage its housing and turn a small repair into a large one. If the noise comes with a burning smell or tripping, stop using it and isolate the power.
What will it cost?
The booking fee is paid when you book. The hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost and you approve it before work starts, and any pump or arm is identified and quoted separately.
