Plastic and rubber smell hot before they fail, and a dishwasher has plenty of both near mains voltage. A burning smell is the appliance telling you something is overheating. The correct response is to stop using it, isolate it, and have it inspected. Running one more cycle to check is how small faults become fires.

First, the safety steps

  • stop the cycle and switch off at the socket if it is safely reachable
  • if the socket is not reachable, isolate the kitchen circuit at the consumer unit
  • do not open the door if there is smoke inside; leave it closed and let it cool
  • if there is visible flame or continuing smoke, leave the property and call 999
  • do not use the machine again until it has been inspected

If the smell is accompanied by a burning mark, a scorched plug, a hot plug top, or a tripped breaker that will not reset, treat it as urgent and do not re-energise.

What a burning smell usually means

  • A failing motor winding. The wash or drain pump motor overheats, and the smell is varnish and insulation cooking.
  • A loose or corroded connection. Resistance at a terminal generates heat, and the plastic around it discolours and smells.
  • A failing control board component. A relay or capacitor overheating on the board produces a sharp, acrid smell.
  • A seized pump drawing locked-rotor current. The motor cannot turn, draws heavily, and gets hot quickly.
  • A failing heater or its wiring. Less common, but a heater terminal can overheat.
  • External cause. Something has fallen onto a hot surface, or a nearby socket or plug is at fault rather than the machine.

The distinction between "the machine smells" and "the plug smells" matters, and it is worth checking the plug and socket for heat and discolouration before anything else. A hot plug top points at the plug or the socket, not the appliance.

Why you should not just reset it

Resetting a breaker or replacing a fuse restores power to a fault that is still present. If a pump has seized, the next attempt draws the same current. If a terminal is loose, the next cycle heats it again. Repeated resets are how a repair becomes a fire.

What the inspection involves

With the machine isolated and cooled, we check the plug and socket for heat damage, inspect the accessible wiring and connectors for discolouration, test the pumps for seizure and winding condition, and check the control board for burnt components. Where a connector has failed we look at why, because a loose terminal is often the result of vibration or a previous repair.

We will tell you plainly if a component has been overheating and whether the machine is safe to repair. Some burning damage is confined to a connector and is straightforward. Some indicates a motor or board at the end of its life.

Parts and the honest answer

Pumps and boards are model-specific and may need ordering. Where the damage is limited to a plug, a terminal block or a length of cable, the repair can be modest. Where a motor has burnt out on an old machine, replacement of the machine is often the better answer, and we will say so.

What we will not do

We will not fit a higher-rated fuse, bypass a thermal cut-out, or reconnect a machine with scorched wiring. We will not describe a machine as safe after a visual check alone if a component has clearly overheated; it needs testing.

Aftercare

After the repair we run a cycle and check the plug and socket temperature afterwards by hand, and inspect the connections again. If the original fault was a loose connection, ask whether anything else on that circuit has been affected.

Booking

Tell us what the smell was like, whether there was smoke, whether the plug or socket felt hot, and whether the breaker tripped. Do not run the machine to gather more information. Book online, with the booking fee paid at booking; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved by you before work starts.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A burning smell from a dishwasher is not a fault to monitor. It usually means insulation is overheating, a connector is arcing, or a motor winding is failing, and those get worse rather than better. Switch the machine off, isolate it if you can do so safely, and do not run another cycle to see whether it clears.

Questions people ask about burning smell from dishwasher

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I just run one more cycle to see if it clears?

No. A burning smell means something is overheating, and another cycle applies the same fault again. Switch it off, isolate it, and have it inspected before further use.

What should I check before you arrive?

Look at the plug and socket for discolouration or heat, and note whether the breaker tripped. Do not open the machine or remove covers. If there was smoke or flame, leave the property and call 999.

Does a burning smell always mean the machine needs replacing?

No. Sometimes it is a loose connector, a plug or a terminal block, which is a modest repair. A burnt-out motor or board on an older machine is where replacement often makes more sense.

Is it safe to leave it plugged in but switched off?

Switching off at the socket is better than leaving it live. If there is any sign of heat damage at the plug, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit instead and leave it off until it is checked.

What will the visit cost?

The booking fee is paid when you book. The hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost and you approve it before work starts, with any pump, board or wiring identified and quoted separately.
