A shed base doesn't have to be far off level to cause trouble — a few millimetres at one corner becomes a sticking door, and a centimetre or two becomes a racked frame. And because base movement rarely stops on its own, the honest question isn't just "how uneven is it?" but "is it still moving, and why?"

Why bases become uneven

The usual story is ground movement: soil that wasn't compacted before the base was laid, ground that softens where water collects, frost heave in winter, or a base built from materials that shift — slabs bedded on sand, timber Bearers settling into soft ground, or plastic grids on unprepared soil. Downpipes discharging beside the shed, a slope that feeds water under one corner and overhanging vegetation keeping the ground damp all speed it up. Sometimes the base was never level to begin with, and the shed has been fighting it since day one.

What we assess

We measure how far out of level the base is and where, check whether the movement is old and stable or recent and progressing, and look at what's driving it — ground condition, drainage, water sources, the base's own construction. We check what the movement has done to the shed above: racked walls, binding doors, gaps opening at joints, stressed fixings. On older sheds with unknown materials we're careful about disturbing anything that could contain asbestos and recommend testing instead. The assessment separates bases that can be corrected in place from those that need rebuilding — an honest distinction that saves people from paying for the wrong fix.

Levelling options

Small, stable deviations can often be corrected by lifting the shed's floor section locally and packing or adjusting the bearers — a contained job. Larger movement calls for re-levelling the base itself: re-bedding slabs on properly compacted material, extending or reinforcing the base where the ground has proved inadequate, or replacing a failed base with something suited to the shed and the ground. Where drainage is the cause, fixing the water source — redirecting that downpipe, improving the fall of the ground — is part of the durable answer. Where digging is involved, we locate underground services carefully and use detectors where appropriate; no scan guarantees what's below, so we'd ask you to check any utility plans you have. Every option is quoted with full approval before work starts, and materials are quoted separately.

Weather and honest limits

Groundwork needs dry conditions — working on wet ground gives false levels — so we schedule around the forecast and tell you plainly if weather must delay the job. We can't guarantee that ground won't move again, especially on sites with challenging soil or drainage, but correcting the cause along with the level gives the base its best chance of staying put. And if the assessment suggests the shed above has been damaged by years on a bad base, we'll include that in the picture so you're deciding with the full story.

It's worth booking an uneven base sooner rather than later. Movement compounds: every season a shed spends fighting a skewed frame, fixings loosen, panels flex and joints open, so the repair grows month by month. Caught early, a base correction is often a contained job; left a couple of years, it can turn into frame repairs, panel replacements and door work on top of the groundworks — the same problem, considerably more expensive.

Booking your assessment

Call or book through the website and tell us the base type, roughly how big the shed is, what's gone uneven and whether doors and panels have started misbehaving. You'll pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any parts quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

An uneven base is the root cause behind a surprising number of shed problems: doors that won't close, panels that rack, floors that bounce and walls that lean. Because the base sits under everything, fixing the shed without fixing the base is a repair that quietly fails. Our visit assesses the base, the ground beneath it and what the shed has inherited.

Questions people ask about uneven shed base

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I level a shed base myself?

Packing a corner of a lightweight base is within reach of DIY, but it's easy to create a new problem — packing that settles, a slab re-bedded on the same soft ground, or a shed lifted unevenly and stressed. If you don't know why the base moved, the level won't last. An assessment tells you the cause as well as the fix.

How uneven does a base need to be to matter?

Less than you'd think — a few millimetres can bind a door, and a couple of centimetres starts racking the frame. We measure the actual deviations and their direction, then relate them to what the shed is doing so you can see the real connection between the base and the symptoms.

Will you need to lift the shed off the base?

Sometimes, depending on the correction needed — small adjustments can often be made with the shed in place, while re-levelling or rebuilding a base means lifting the shed off temporarily. We'll explain what your job needs at the assessment and quote accordingly before anything is moved.

Could digging be involved, and what about pipes and cables?

Possibly, where the base needs extending or rebuilding. We locate underground services carefully and use detectors where appropriate, but no scan can guarantee what's below — so we'd also ask you to check any utility plans or build records you have before groundwork starts.

How much will it cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any parts and base materials quoted separately, so you approve the whole plan before we begin.
