A dryer is a drum on bearings with a belt around it, so most noises come from a small group of components: the drum bearings, the drum rollers or glides, the belt and its tensioner, the motor, the fan, or something loose inside the cabinet. Which one it is can usually be worked out from when the noise happens and what it sounds like.
Reading the noise
A deep rumble that builds with speed and continues after the drum stops suggests worn drum bearings. A rhythmic thump once per revolution points to a flat spot on a roller, a bent drum or something trapped between the drum and the seal. A high squeal is often the belt or a dry bearing. A rattling or scraping sound can be a coin, bra wire or button that has passed the filter and is sitting against the fan housing. A noise only on start-up may be the motor or a loose pulley. Listen with the door closed and the room quiet, and note whether the sound changes with load size.
Checks that do not need tools
Empty the drum and turn it by hand with the machine unplugged. If you feel a rough patch, a tight spot or hear a scrape, that is useful information. Shine a torch through the door and look for small metal items near the drum lip. Check that the machine is not touching a wall or a cupboard, because vibration transferred to furniture can sound like a mechanical fault. Remove anything resting on top of the dryer.
What we inspect
We isolate the machine, remove the panels required to reach the drive, and check the belt for fraying or a glazed surface, the tensioner and pulleys for play, the drum rollers or glides for flat spots, and the drum bearings for roughness and end float. The fan is inspected for foreign objects and damaged blades, and the motor mounts are checked for looseness. We run the machine with panels off where it is safe to do so, which usually makes the source obvious within minutes.
Repair choices and cost
Belts, rollers and glides are inexpensive and a straightforward repair. Drum bearings vary enormously: on some machines they are a serviceable part, on others the drum and bearing are supplied as one assembly at a much higher price. A motor or fan replacement sits in the middle. We will tell you the likely cost before ordering anything and will not present a major strip-down as the only option if a simpler repair will do.
Parts and model support
Parts are identified from the model and serial plate and quoted separately. Older machines and some budget brands have poor parts support, and a common part may be unavailable for a model that is otherwise sound. If that happens we will say so clearly rather than improvising with something that does not fit. We do not fit salvaged bearings or belts.
Avoiding a repeat
Keep loads within the rated capacity; overloading is hard on bearings, rollers and belts. Remove coins and check pockets before loading, and clean the filter so lint does not pack into the fan housing. Make sure the machine sits level with all feet firm on the floor. If a noise returns soon after a repair, tell us, because it may indicate a related component that was borderline at the time.
What to tell us when booking
Describe the sound in your own words, when it happens and whether it changes with the load. Give us the model number from the door sticker and tell us whether the sound has got worse over time or appeared suddenly. If the noise is accompanied by a burning smell or the drum has stopped turning, say so, because that changes the urgency and the advice.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Dryers make noise, but a machine that suddenly thumps, squeals or grinds is telling you something has worn or come loose. The type of sound matters: a rhythmic thud points somewhere different from a continuous squeal. The visit is about locating the source precisely, so the repair addresses the cause rather than replacing parts until the noise stops.

Questions people ask about tumble dryer making loud noise
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I find the cause myself?
You can gather useful clues. With the dryer unplugged, turn the drum by hand and feel for rough spots, and look for loose items inside. Do not remove panels or run the machine with covers off; the diagnosis needs the machine isolated and inspected properly.
What noises point to which fault?
A rhythmic thump usually means a flat-spotted roller or something trapped, and a continuous rumble suggests drum bearings. A squeal often indicates the belt or a dry bearing, while rattling can be a foreign object near the fan.
Is a noisy dryer dangerous?
Not always, but a grinding or scraping noise can mean a failing bearing or a foreign object contacting moving parts, and continuing to run it may cause further damage. If there is also a burning smell or heat, stop using it.
Will you need to take the whole machine apart?
Usually only the panels needed to reach the drive and drum. Most noises are traced without a full strip-down, though a bearing replacement on some models requires more dismantling, which we will explain before starting.
What does the repair cost?
The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost and you approve it before work starts. Parts are identified and quoted separately once the noise is traced.
