If your dryer smells of burning, the priority is not diagnosis. It is making the machine safe and deciding whether this is an emergency. A hot, acrid or plastic smell can come from lint on the heater, a slipping belt, a failing motor, overheated wiring, a foreign object against a hot surface or a blockage in the vent. Some of those are modest faults. All of them need the machine inspected before it is used again, because the difference between a smell and a fire can be a single cycle.
Do this now
Stop the cycle and switch the machine off at the control. If the plug is accessible, undamaged and your hands are dry, unplug it; do not pull on a cable that is hot, scorched or wet, and do not reach behind a machine that is still running. Open a window and a door to ventilate the room. Do not open the dryer door wide if there is smoke inside, because a rush of air can feed a fire. If you see flames, smoke that keeps coming, or the smell is accompanied by crackling, leave the property, close the door behind you, get everyone out and call 999. Do not attempt to extinguish a dryer fire with water.
After the immediate steps
Do not reconnect the appliance to see whether the smell has gone. Do not run a short cycle to test it. Do not replace a fuse or reset a breaker and try again. A dryer that has overheated may have scorched wiring, a distorted heater housing, a damaged drum seal or lint still smouldering inside the cabinet, none of which is visible from the front. Leave it isolated until it has been inspected.
What we look for on the visit
We examine the heater and its housing for scorching and lint accumulation, the belt for slipping or glazing, the motor and wiring for heat damage, the drum seal and the area behind the drum for trapped lint, the fan for obstruction, and the full vent route for blockage. We test the thermostats and thermal cut-out, because a device that failed to operate is often part of the story. Where a component has been damaged by heat, we quote replacement rather than attempting a clean-up.
The causes behind the smell
Lint contacting the heater is the classic cause, usually following months of restricted airflow or a filter that was not cleaned. A belt slipping on a seized pulley produces a rubbery smell. A failing motor or a worn bearing produces a hot, metallic smell. Wiring damaged by heat or a loose terminal produces an acrid, plastic smell. A plastic item fallen into the drum and melted produces an obvious chemical smell. The type of smell narrows the search, but only inspection confirms it.
Repair or replace
Where the cause is lint and a blocked vent, cleaning and a new seal or cut-out may be all that is needed. Where the heater housing, wiring loom or drum assembly has been heat damaged, the cost rises and replacement often makes more sense. We will give you an honest comparison and will not carry out a cosmetic clean-up that leaves the risk in place.
Reducing the risk afterwards
Clean the lint filter every cycle, without exception. Have the vent cleaned periodically. Never run the dryer without the filter, with a damaged seal, or with items that have been in contact with oil, solvent, wax or cleaning chemicals. Keep the area around the machine clear and do not stack anything on top of it.
Booking the inspection
Tell us what the smell was like, when it appeared, whether there was any smoke, and whether the machine cut out. Give the brand and model. If there has been a fire, even a small one, say so, because the appliance may need to be written off rather than repaired.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A burning smell from a tumble dryer is not a fault to monitor and see how it goes. Lint, heat and a moving air stream are the three ingredients of a dryer fire, and a smell is often the only warning you get. Stop using the machine now, follow the safety steps below, and arrange for it to be inspected before it runs another load.

Questions people ask about burning smell from dryer
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I just air the room and carry on using it?
No. A burning smell means the machine should not run another cycle until it has been inspected. Lint, heat and airflow together are a fire risk, and the smell may be the only warning you get.
What should I do if there is smoke or flame?
Leave the property, close the door behind you, get everyone out and call 999. Do not open the dryer door wide and do not use water. Do not reconnect the appliance afterwards; it needs assessment first.
What will you check when you visit?
The heater and housing for scorching and lint, the belt, motor and wiring for heat damage, the drum seal and the area behind the drum, the fan, and the full vent route. We also test the thermostats and thermal cut-out.
Will it be repairable?
Often yes, if the cause is lint, a blocked vent or a failed cut-out. If the heater housing, wiring loom or drum assembly has been heat damaged, replacement may be the more sensible option, and we will tell you which it is.
What does the visit cost?
The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any heat-damaged parts identified and priced separately.
