Tumble Dryer Installation Done Properly, From Vent to Level in Birmingham

Installing a dryer sounds straightforward: take the old one out, put the new one in, plug it in, attach the hose. In practice most dryer complaints in the first month trace back to installation. A crushed vent hose, a machine pushed tight against a wall, feet left unadjusted, a condenser unit without clearance to breathe, or a supply that cannot carry the load will all make a good appliance look faulty.

What the visit covers

We check the space, the access route and the floor, position the machine and level it on its feet, connect it to the existing electrical supply, and fit the vent hose or condenser arrangement as appropriate for the model. We confirm clearances at the back and sides, check that the door opens fully, and run a short test cycle to confirm the drum turns and the machine behaves as expected. Where a stacked arrangement is planned, we confirm the model is suitable for stacking and that the kit is correct.

Venting and airflow

A vented dryer needs a short, free-flowing route to outside. We connect to an existing termination and check that the flap opens and the hose is not kinked behind the machine. We do not install new ducting through walls as part of a standard installation; if a new vent route is needed, that is a separate piece of work we can quote for. A condensing or heat-pump dryer needs clearance for air intake and a water container or drain connection according to the model.

Electrical supply and limits

A dryer needs its own suitable socket, and we connect to an existing one. We do not install new circuits, add sockets, alter wiring or work on consumer units; that is electrical installation work outside this service. If the only available socket is on an extension lead, or the existing socket shows signs of heat damage, we will stop and explain what needs to be done by a qualified electrician before the machine can be used.

Floor, space and access

Check the doorway and stair width before delivery day. Dryers are bulky and some utility rooms are tight. The floor should be sound and reasonably level; a suspended timber floor will transmit more vibration, and a machine in a tight recess needs clearance to avoid drumming against the units. If the old appliance needs disconnecting and removing, tell us in advance, since that affects the time required and may carry a separate charge.

What we cannot do

We do not carry out structural alterations, core new holes through walls, extend gas supplies, or connect a gas-heated dryer to a gas supply. Gas work is not something we undertake, and a gas-heated appliance must be connected and commissioned by a Gas Safe registered engineer. We also do not install appliances in positions that breach the manufacturer's clearances.

Getting it right from day one

Remove transit fixings before the first cycle, because a machine run with them in place can damage its own suspension. Level the feet and tighten the lock nuts. Leave the specified clearance at the back so the hose does not crush. Run one empty cycle to clear any manufacturing residue, then a normal load and check for vibration and correct drying.

Booking installation

Tell us the make and model of the new dryer, whether it is vented, condensing or heat pump, what the existing vent arrangement is, and whether the old machine needs removing. Send a photo of the space if you can. That lets us confirm the visit is suitable before you book rather than discovering a problem on the day.
