Programme Stuck Mid-Cycle? Where the Sequence Is Stopping

We observe where the cycle halts, read any code, and test the sensors and drain path that can leave a programme waiting indefinitely.

Booking fee plus hourly labour — the price is confirmed before any work starts.

A stuck programme can look like a frozen machine, but the control board is usually doing exactly what it was told: waiting for a condition that never arrives. Water level, temperature, drain completion and door status are the usual conditions. When one of them never reports as satisfied, the cycle stalls in place.

Where it stops tells you what to check

  • Stalls early, shortly after start: fill stage. Water not arriving, or not being detected.
  • Stalls after a few minutes of wash: heating stage. The machine is waiting for temperature.
  • Stalls before draining: drain stage. The machine cannot empty, so it cannot advance.
  • Stalls at the end, before finishing: final rinse or drying, often waiting on temperature.
  • Stalls at random points: control board, pressure sensor drift, or an intermittent connection.

Time the stall. A machine that stops at four minutes on every cycle is behaving consistently, which is diagnostic. One that stops at different points is pointing at something intermittent.

Reading the code without over-reading it

Most machines flash a pattern or show a short code when they stall. Write it down with the number of flashes and the rhythm. Codes are model-specific and the same number means different things on different brands, so we look yours up against your model rather than assuming.

A machine with no display may still flash the start button in a repeated pattern. Count it.

The usual causes

  • Blocked or kinked drain hose, so the drain never completes and the machine will not advance to rinse.
  • Blocked sink spigot or trap, backing water into the machine during drain.
  • Pressure switch or flow meter drift, so the board never sees the fill it asked for.
  • Heater or sensor fault, so the temperature target is never met and the cycle waits.
  • Water in the base tray, which triggers a protective stop at an unpredictable point.
  • Control board fault, where the sequencing logic itself is failing.
  • Interference from a failing pump, which can disturb the board's sensing.

What we do

We run the cycle and watch it, which sounds simple but is the most informative thing available. We note where it stops, how long it ran, and what the machine does at that point: silence, a pump hum, a click, a code. Then we test the corresponding sensor or path.

For a drain stall, we confirm the hose, spigot and trap are clear. For a fill stall, we measure water intake and check the pressure chamber. For a heating stall, we measure temperature. For a random stall, we check the base tray and the board's connections.

Resetting is not a repair

A power reset will often clear a stall and let the machine complete one cycle, which is why people think it is fixed. If it stalls again at the same point, the underlying condition is still there. Repeated resets do not fix anything and, where the cause is water in the base tray, they keep energising a machine with a leak.

Parts and cost

Sensors, pressure switches and boards are model-specific. Where a part is needed we identify it against your model and quote separately, and if it has to be ordered the job runs to two visits. We will not present a board as the answer before the cheaper causes are excluded.

Safety

Power is isolated for any internal work, and water too where the sump or hoses are involved, only where both are safely accessible. If there is water in the base or under the machine, keep it isolated and tell us at booking. If the machine has tripped the electrics, do not keep resetting it.

Aftercare

After the repair we run two complete cycles, not one, because an intermittent stall may not appear on the first. Confirm the machine reaches the end and releases normally. If your model has a delay-start feature, check it still works, since a stuck timer can imitate a stalled programme.

Booking

Tell us how long the machine runs before stalling, whether it is the same point each time, and any flash pattern. Book online, with the booking fee paid at booking; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved by you before work starts.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A dishwasher that starts, runs for a while and then sits doing nothing is not necessarily broken in a dramatic way. Cycles are sequences with checks between each stage, and if a check is never satisfied the machine waits. Finding which stage it stops at is most of the work, and it can usually be done on one visit.

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 27 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Tumble Dryer Not Starting Cycle

Good job, slightly late

Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.

Job: Toaster Not Working

No mess left behind

Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about dishwasher program stuck

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Will switching it off and on fix it?

It may let one cycle complete, but if it stalls again at the same point the cause is still there. Repeated resets do not repair anything, and if the cause is water in the base tray they keep energising a leaking machine.

How do I know which stage it stops at?

Time it from pressing start and note what you can hear. A stall at two minutes is a fill issue, after several minutes is heating, before draining is a drain issue. Tell us the timing and it narrows quickly.

What will you check first?

We run the cycle and observe exactly where it stops. Then we test the matching sensor or path: drain hose and spigot for a drain stall, the fill system for a fill stall, and temperature for a heating stall.

Could it be the control board?

Possibly, but it is not the first suspect. Blocked drains, sensor drift and water in the base account for most stalls, and we exclude those before quoting a board.

What will it cost?

The booking fee is paid when you book. The hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, and any sensor or board is identified and quoted separately against your model.
