Most dishwasher leaks are slow and visible. A minority are sudden and substantial: a burst fill hose, an inlet valve that sticks open, an overflowing tub, or a drain connection that comes apart under pressure. Those are the cases that produce real damage to floors, units and ceilings below.
The warning signs worth acting on
- water in the plinth area or under the machine
- the base tray float lifted, so the machine will not start
- a bulge or damp patch on the cabinet base beside the machine
- water marks on the ceiling below, if the kitchen is upstairs
- the machine filling when it is switched off
- a fill that never stops, or water audible after the cycle ends
- a hose that feels soft, cracked or bulging
That fifth point is the one to take seriously: a dishwasher should not take in water when it is not running. If it does, the inlet valve is passing and the machine needs to be isolated at the supply, not just switched off.
The main flood paths
- Fill hose failure. The most dramatic. Rubber hoses age, and a burst releases mains pressure water continuously.
- Inlet valve stuck open. The machine fills without command, overflows, and the base tray eventually trips.
- Door seal failure with overfill. Water escapes at the front, usually less volume but persistent.
- Drain hose detachment. Water pumps out under the units instead of into the waste.
- Sump or pump housing failure. Water collects underneath rather than at the front.
- Base tray overflow. The tray fills, the float lifts, and the machine stops, which is protection working rather than failing.
Anti-flood devices
Many machines have a base tray with a float switch, and some fill hoses have a mechanical anti-flood valve at the tap end that shuts off if the inner hose bursts. These are worthwhile but not universal, and older machines often have neither. If yours has a base tray, water in it means something has leaked; drying it out without finding the source just resets the machine to leak again.
We check whether your machine has these devices and whether they are working, because a failed float switch removes the protection that would otherwise stop a small leak becoming a large one.
What we do on the visit
We inspect the fill hose along its length, test the inlet valve for passing when closed, check the door seal and the fill level, inspect the drain connections and the pump housing, and check the base tray and float. Where the machine is at risk of a sudden failure, we will say so plainly and recommend replacing the component before it lets go, rather than waiting for it to fail.
Isolation guidance
If you suspect a flood risk, close the appliance isolating valve if it is safely accessible. If there is no valve, or it will not close, isolate the water at the mains stopcock. Switch off the power at the socket if you can reach it safely; if not, isolate the kitchen circuit at the consumer unit. Do not pull the machine out with water inside it or with the power on.
If water has already reached a socket, a spur or the consumer unit area, do not touch the electrics; isolate at the main switch if it is safe to do so and seek advice.
What we will not claim
No machine can be made completely flood-proof, and we will not fit a device or part and describe it as such. We can identify the components most at risk on your machine and replace those that are deteriorated.
Aftercare
After the work, run a full cycle and check underneath and at the front for damp, and check the base tray is dry. Consider whether the machine sits on a floor that would be damaged by water, and whether an isolating valve is reachable without moving the appliance. A valve you cannot reach in an emergency is of limited use.
Booking
Tell us what you have seen, whether the machine takes water when off, and whether you can reach the isolating valve. Book online with the brand and model, pay the booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Flooding risk is not a fault you wait on. A dishwasher holds hot water under pressure, and a failed hose or a stuck inlet valve can put a lot of it on the floor in a short time, often while nobody is home. If you have warning signs, the sensible move is to stop using the machine and get it looked at.

Questions people ask about dishwasher flooding risk
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
The machine is taking in water when it's switched off. What should I do?
Close the appliance isolating valve if you can reach it safely, or the mains stopcock if not. That points at an inlet valve passing, and it should be dealt with before the machine is used again.
What is the base tray and why does it matter?
It is a shallow tray under the machine with a float switch. If water collects there, the float lifts and the machine refuses to run. Water in the tray means something has leaked, so drying it alone is not a repair.
Can you make it flood-proof?
No one can guarantee that. We can inspect the components most at risk, such as the fill hose and inlet valve, replace deteriorated parts, and check that any anti-flood device your machine has is working.
Is it safe to keep using it while I wait for a visit?
If there is water under the machine, a damp cabinet base or the machine filling when off, do not use it. Isolate the water and power and leave it until it has been checked.
How much will the visit cost?
The booking fee is taken when you book. The hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, so urgency affects the rate. We quote the full cost and you approve it before work starts, with any hose or valve quoted separately.
