A gate that reverses mid-cycle is frustrating in a particular way: it looks like the machinery is misbehaving, when in fact the machinery is very often doing exactly what its protection is telling it. The reversal is a symptom, and the real fault is whatever is triggering it. Finding that trigger — and fixing it without weakening the protection — is the entire job.
Why a Gate Reverses
Modern gate controls are required to treat unexpected resistance and broken beams as reasons to stop and reverse. So the gate reverses when a photocell beam is being interrupted, when a safety edge believes it has touched something, when the motor meets more resistance than its force limit allows, or when the board itself has developed a fault that misreads its inputs. Notice the pattern: three of those four causes are the safety system working. The gate is not confused — something in its world is making it stop, and that something may be a genuinely safe reaction to a real, if invisible, problem.
The Common Triggers We Find
A slightly misaligned photocell whose beam flickers in wind, or lenses dirtied by mud and cobwebs. A safety edge that has been knocked and is now permanently or intermittently "triggered" — sometimes from internal damage invisible from outside. Mechanical resistance: a gate leaf that has dropped and drags, a track with a worn or gritty patch, a stiff hinge — the force limit reads the resistance as an obstruction. Water in a junction or sensor that intermittently fakes a signal. And settings that have drifted or been changed, leaving limits tighter than the gate's actual condition.
Why We Never Fix It the Easy Way
There is an obvious, wrong fix available: turn the force up, tape the photocells, disconnect the edge. It makes the reversal stop today and creates a gate that will close on a child's leg without hesitation tomorrow. Safety edges, photocells and force limits must never be disabled or bypassed — not by us, and we would urge you not to accept it from anyone. The correct fix removes the trigger: realign the sensor, replace the damaged edge, free the dragging mechanics, restore the correct settings.
How We Diagnose It
We watch several full cycles and note exactly where the reversal happens — same point every time suggests mechanics; random timing suggests a sensor or connection; weather-linked behaviour suggests damp or sun on the photocells. Then we test each layer deliberately: beam-break test on the photocells, controlled edge test per the manufacturer's method, and force measurements against specification. Finally we examine the mechanics by hand for the resistance a motor would feel.
What the Repair Involves
Realigning and cleaning photocells, replacing damaged safety edges with the correct profile for your gate, freeing and easing hinges, tracks and rams, remaking damp-affected connections, and restoring force and sensitivity settings to the manufacturer's specification. Where a control board input has genuinely failed, the board is diagnosed and quoted separately for repair or replacement. Nothing proceeds without your approval of the full cost, and parts are always quoted separately from labour.
Testing Before We Leave
The proof of this repair is that the gate completes its cycle smoothly and still reverses properly for a genuine obstruction. We test both: full cycles from every control method, then a deliberate beam-break and edge test so you can see the protection alive and working. A gate that no longer reverses at all is not fixed — it is broken in a more dangerous way, and we will never hand one over like that.
When to Call Us
Book a visit when reversals are repeated rather than a one-off, when they started after weather, building work or a knock to the gate, or when the reversal point is consistent. Tell us the make and model, where in the cycle it reverses, and whether anything changed recently near the gateway.
Booking Your Visit
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, with parts quoted separately. Same-day visits may be available depending on the schedule.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.
Booked 14+ days ahead
£25 booking fee
then £85 per hour of labour
Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.
Booked within 48 hours
£100 booking fee
then £65 per hour of labour
For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.
Same-day call-out
£220 booking fee
then £45 per hour of labour
Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A gate that starts to close then reverses for no visible reason is annoying — and it is also the system telling you something specific. Our visit finds which safety device or condition is triggering the reversal and fixes the cause, not the protection.

Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about gate reversing incorrectly
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Should I turn the force setting up to stop the reversing?
No. Force limits exist to stop the gate pushing through an obstruction, and raising them to silence a reversal removes exactly that protection — it is how gates end up striking people and cars. The reversal has a real trigger; the correct repair finds and removes it while keeping the safety settings at specification.
What do you check when a gate keeps reversing?
We watch where in the cycle it reverses, then test each protective layer deliberately — the photocell beam, the safety edges and the force limits — and check the mechanics by hand for hidden resistance. That identifies whether the trigger is a sensor, an edge, drag in the mechanics or the board itself.
Is the reversing itself dangerous?
The reversal is the safe part — it is the gate protecting whatever triggered it. The risk lies in what the reversal is being caused by, or in the shortcuts people take to stop it. Bypassing safety devices is the dangerous response; we fix the cause so the gate runs smoothly and still protects.
My gate reverses only when it's windy — why?
Wind moving a slightly misaligned photocell can flicker the beam, and wind load on a large gate leaf also increases the resistance the motor feels. Both are genuine triggers, and both are fixable — realignment or securing the sensors, and freeing or adjusting the mechanics — without touching the safety settings.
What will the visit cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book. Labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start. Any parts, such as a replacement safety edge or photocell, are quoted separately.
