Photocells are the small paired units mounted either side of the gateway, one sending an invisible beam to the other. If anything breaks that beam, the gate refuses to close or reverses. It is one of the most important safety features on any automated gate, which is exactly why a faulty photocell deserves a proper repair rather than the tape-and-hope treatment it too often gets.

What Photocells Do and Why They Matter

A gate is heavy moving machinery — sliding gates can weigh several hundred kilograms and swing gates swing with real force at head height. Photocells, together with safety edges and the motor's force limits, form the protection that stops that machinery striking a person or a pet. These devices must never be disabled or bypassed. Taping over a photocell to make a stubborn gate close is how gates end up crushing bumpers and, far worse, injuring people. If your photocells are faulty, the honest and only safe answer is to fix them.

How Photocells Fail

The commonest failures are mundane. Misalignment: a knock from a car, a strimmer or a football moves a unit a few millimetres and the beam is lost. Contamination: mud splashed by the driveway, cobwebs, leaves and snow accumulate on the lenses. Water: a cracked housing or perished gasket lets rain in and corrodes the electronics. Sunlight: low winter sun directly down the driveway can blind the receiver at certain hours. Beyond the units themselves, wiring faults, failed power supplies and control board input faults produce identical symptoms.

Symptoms of a Photocell Problem

The gate refuses to close with no visible obstacle. It closes in the morning and refuses at dusk — the sunlight signature. It reverses immediately every time. The LED indicators on the units show red where they should show steady. Or the control board reports a safety device fault. Each pattern points somewhere different, which is why the diagnosis matters.

How We Assess Photocells

We inspect and clean the lenses, check alignment precisely, test each unit's power and signal, examine housings and cable entries for water ingress, and verify the wiring back to the control board. We test the system's behaviour with the beam deliberately broken — a proper function test, not just a look at LEDs — and we check how the board responds when the photocells fault, because a gate that fails safe is the whole point of the exercise.

Repair and Replacement Done Right

Cleaning and realignment fixes a surprising number of faults. Water-damaged or failed units are replaced with a matched pair — mixing brands or types between sender and receiver causes exactly the intermittent faults you are trying to cure. Wiring faults are remade with outdoor-grade connections, and units damaged by repeated knocks can be repositioned or better protected. Where low sun blinds a sensor, we will discuss options such as repositioning or shielding. Parts are quoted separately, and the full cost is approved before work starts.

The One Thing We Will Not Do

We will not bypass, disable or tape over your photocells to get the gate closing, and we would ask you not to accept that from anyone. A gate that closes by defeating its own safety equipment is a hazard in the making, and it is a false economy — a repaired photocell costs far less than the damage or injury a bypassed one eventually causes. After any work we run a full obstruction test so you can see the protection working before we leave.

Aftercare

Photocells repay a little attention: keep the lenses clear of leaves and mud, and mention any knock to the units — realignment is a quick job before it becomes a fault. During a service we clean, realign and function-test the photocells along with the rest of the safety equipment, which suits most households once a year or so depending on use.

When to Call Us

Book a visit when the gate refuses to close or reverses without an obvious cause, when the sensor LEDs show fault colours, or after anything has knocked the units. Tell us the gate's make and model, whether the fault follows the time of day, and whether the units look damaged or dirty.

Booking Your Visit

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before we start, with any parts quoted separately. Same-day visits may be available — a gate with compromised safety is one we prioritise.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about gate safety sensor fault

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I clean or realign photocells myself?

Gently cleaning the lenses and checking nothing is blocking the beam is safe and often effective. Beyond that, realignment, wiring work and testing the units' electronics is engineer territory — photocells are a safety system, and getting them subtly wrong is worse than leaving them alone. Never tape over or bypass them under any circumstances.

What do you check on a photocell fault?

We clean and test the lenses, verify alignment, test each unit's power and signal, check housings and cabling for water ingress, and confirm the control board responds correctly to a broken beam. We finish with a live obstruction test so you can see the safety protection working before we leave.

The gate refuses to close — can you just disable the sensors so it works?

No, and we would encourage you to refuse anyone who offers. Photocells stop a heavy gate from striking people and pets, and disabling or bypassing them removes that protection entirely. The fault gets repaired or the sensors replaced, so the gate closes reliably and safely at the same time.

My gate only misbehaves when the sun is low — is that the photocells?

Very likely. Low sunlight shining straight down the driveway can blind the receiver into thinking the beam is broken, so the gate refuses to close at certain hours. Depending on the layout we can realign, reposition or shield the units, or replace tired sensors — the diagnosis will confirm which suits your gateway.

What does photocell repair cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book. Labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start. Replacement photocell units are quoted separately as parts.
