Every recording your cameras make passes through a hard drive that never stops working. Unlike the drive in a laptop, a CCTV drive runs around the clock, and that constant duty means it is the most likely component in the whole system to wear out. The good news: drive failure is expected, replaceable and usually repairable in a single visit. The bad news: it announces itself quietly, and if you miss the signs you can lose weeks of footage without noticing.
The warning signs of a failing drive
Recorders usually give hints before a drive gives up entirely. Look for beeping from the recorder, a drive status or error icon on screen, playback that skips or stutters, footage with gaps in the timeline, recordings that stop and restart, or the interface becoming sluggish. A drive corrupted by a sudden power cut may show similar symptoms without being physically worn. Complete failure is more obvious: the recorder reports no drive at all, or refuses to record while displaying a storage error. Ignoring these signs is the expensive mistake — a drive that is still limping along may hold footage you cannot afford to lose, and every day of delay risks it.
How we assess the drive
Our engineer reads the recorder's drive status and event logs, then tests the drive's health with proper diagnostic tools rather than trusting the on-screen icon alone. We check how the drive has been mounted and ventilated, since heat and vibration shorten drive life considerably, and we review the recorder's settings — overwrite behaviour, retention length and recording quality — which affect both how long footage lasts and how hard the drive works. We also establish carefully whether existing footage is readable, because there is a real difference between a drive that has failed to write and one whose recorded data is gone.
Repair, recovery and replacement
Where the drive is worn or has failed, replacement is the practical answer and is usually completed in one visit. We fit a drive specified for continuous CCTV duty, quoted as a part before fitting, and configure the recorder to use it properly — formatting, recording settings and overwrite behaviour all set correctly from the start. Where footage matters and is still readable, we will advise on copying it off before any reformatting. Where a drive has suffered deeper failure, we will tell you honestly what recovery is realistic rather than promising the impossible; serious data recovery is a specialist field and we will say when that is the only route. No storage setup guarantees footage against every failure, and we will explain sensible retention and backup options without overselling them.
Your footage, your responsibility
Whatever is on that drive is personal data, and as the system owner you are responsible for handling it lawfully and considerately — footage should cover your own property rather than unnecessarily filming neighbours' homes or public space, be kept for a sensible length of time, and be shared only appropriately, for example with the police if they request it about an incident. When a drive is replaced, think about what should happen to the old one; we can advise on wiping it so recordings do not leave your control in a skip. We fit and configure equipment but do not provide legal advice.
Aftercare
After replacement, glance at the recorder's drive status occasionally and act on beeps or error icons quickly rather than silencing them. Keeping the recorder ventilated and dust-free genuinely extends drive life. A recorder that has lost one drive to old age will eventually age another the same way, so build the habit of checking your timeline weekly.
When to call us
Book at the first warning sign rather than after the drive dies, and tell us the recorder's make and model, what warnings you are seeing, and whether anything preceded it such as a power cut. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with the drive itself quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
The hard drive is the one part of a CCTV system that is always working, spinning and writing every hour of every day, and eventually it wears out. A failing drive announces itself with warning signs that are easy to miss. Our engineer tests drive health properly, rescues what can be rescued and replaces the drive cleanly so your recordings resume.
What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service
5 out of 5 from 7 reviews
Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Alarm Repair Service

Questions people ask about hard drive failure in cctv system
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Could I replace the hard drive myself?
Opening a recorder and swapping a drive involves mains-adjacent electronics, correct drive specification and configuration work, so we would advise against DIY. Buying a consumer drive is also a common false saving — CCTV duty needs drives built for continuous recording. The diagnosis is the part that matters most anyway.
What do you check when a drive is suspected?
We read the recorder's status and event logs, test the drive's health with diagnostic tools, check ventilation and mounting, and review recording and overwrite settings. We also establish whether existing footage is still readable before anything is formatted or replaced.
Can footage from a failed drive always be recovered?
Honestly, no. If the drive is healthy but settings or wiring were at fault, footage is usually intact. Worn or corrupted drives sometimes still allow copying of readable recordings, but deeper failures may need specialist recovery with no guarantee. We will assess what is realistic during diagnosis rather than promising in advance.
How long should my system keep recordings?
Retention depends on drive size, the number of cameras, image quality and how much motion your property sees, so there is no single answer. We will calculate what your setup realistically achieves and configure overwrite behaviour so recordings roll on sensibly rather than filling up and stopping.
What will the visit cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book. Labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts; parts are quoted separately.
