A sensor system is more than a collection of devices. It is sensors joined to a panel or hub, organised into zones, named so the panel and app tell you exactly which opening has triggered, configured with sensible entry and exit behaviour, and tested end to end. Getting each part right matters less than getting them to work together, which is why a half-configured system produces the most frustrating faults in the category: zones that report as the wrong room, sensors that pair and then vanish, entry delays that do not match the doors, and a panel full of unnamed zones nobody can interpret. Our setup visit finishes the job properly, from the first pairing to the final walk test.
What a proper setup involves
It starts with a plan rather than a pairing queue. We map which sensors belong to which zones, what each zone should be called, which doors need entry and exit delays and how long, and which sensors are active when the system is set in each mode. Then the technical work: pairing each wireless sensor to the hub or panel properly — not power-cycled and hoped, but joined in the manufacturer's sequence and verified — or connecting wired sensors to their zones with the system safely isolated. Zones are named meaningfully, so 'Hallway' means the hallway and not zone three. Panel and app configuration follows: set and unset behaviour, entry and exit timers matched to your actual doors, notification settings, and user access if the system supports it. Placement issues surfaced during setup — a sensor struggling for signal where it sits, a motion sensor whose pattern does not quite cover its room — are flagged and discussed rather than quietly tolerated, because setup is the last cheap moment to fix them.
How we verify it
Testing is where a setup earns its keep. Every sensor gets a live test: doors opened and closed, windows opened, every room walked, and the panel's report checked against what actually happened. Interconnections are tested — one alarm triggering the others, notifications arriving where they should. Entry and exit delays are timed against your normal routine, because a system that beeps you out at the wrong pace trains the household into bad habits. You are walked through the finished system: how to set and unset it, what each zone is, what the app shows, and what a warning means when one appears. If anything fails a test, we stop and correct the configuration or the device before moving on, and you keep the zone list as left on the panel, so future changes have a baseline. A system handed over without testing is a guess with batteries.
Honest limits
No setup can promise a system that never has a connectivity hiccup or an app outage — smart systems depend on networks and third-party services that nobody controls — and no configuration guarantees detection in every condition. What a proper setup does deliver is a system configured sensibly for your home, tested as a whole, and understood by the people who use it. If your setup is part of a larger installation project, that is quoted after a survey, with parts quoted separately and the full cost approved before work starts.
Booking a system setup
Call or use the website and tell us what equipment you have — panel or hub make, how many sensors, wired or wireless — and what stage the setup has reached. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any parts quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.
Booked 14+ days ahead
£25 booking fee
then £85 per hour of labour
Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.
Booked within 48 hours
£100 booking fee
then £65 per hour of labour
For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.
Same-day call-out
£220 booking fee
then £45 per hour of labour
Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.
We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Individual sensors only become a security system when they are organised — zoned, named, paired, configured and tested as a whole. That final mile is where DIY setups usually fall short. We complete it properly: every sensor joined, every zone behaving, and a system you understand how to use.
What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service
5 out of 5 from 7 reviews
Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Alarm Repair Service

Questions people ask about sensor system setup
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I set up a sensor system myself?
Many wireless systems are designed for self-setup, and if you enjoy that kind of thing it is entirely reasonable DIY. The common gaps are meaningful zone naming, entry and exit timers matched to real doors, and a full verification test — which is exactly the part a setup visit completes if you would rather not.
What does a setup visit include?
We plan zones and names, pair or connect every sensor properly, configure the panel and app — set modes, entry and exit delays, notifications — and test every sensor live against the panel's report, including interconnections. Then we walk you through using the finished system.
Is a new system safe to use untested?
We would not call a system finished until it has been walk-tested sensor by sensor — an untested system can report perfectly while missing half its openings. If you have already installed equipment yourself, a verification visit is a sensible investment before you rely on it.
Will my system still work if the internet goes down?
It depends on the system: many alarm panels detect and sound locally regardless of connectivity, while app notifications and some smart features stop when the network or a third-party service is unavailable. We will tell you honestly which parts of your system depend on connectivity and which do not — no setup can promise third-party service availability.
How is a system setup priced?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, and any parts or additional equipment are quoted separately.
