Wood rot is a fungus feeding on damp timber, and it only needs three things: moisture, time and wood. A shed that sits against a damp hedge, on a base that holds water, or under a leaking roof provides all three. The reason rot deserves a proper assessment is that it spreads inside the timber long before it shows on the surface — by the time a board feels soft, the members behind it may already be affected.
Where rot starts and why
The classic trouble spots are the bottom of the walls, where rain splashback and damp ground keep the timber wet; the floor, especially where boards meet the base; the door frame and window sills, which collect water in joints; and anywhere the roof leaks or a gutter has failed for years. Poor ventilation inside a sealed-up shed keeps humidity high and accelerates decay. Two types matter: wet rot, which softens timber locally where it stays damp, and the more aggressive dry rot, which can travel through a building in search of more wood. Serious suspected dry rot on a shed close to the house deserves a closer look, and we'll flag it honestly if we think specialist input is needed.
How we assess the rot
We probe the timbers systematically — frame members, floorboards, wall boards, sill and head — to map where the wood is sound and where it's past saving. We check the base and surrounding ground for the moisture source, look at the roof covering and gutters, and check ventilation. The assessment distinguishes between local rot that can be cut out and patched, structural rot in the frame that affects the shed's stability, and general decay where repair costs approach replacement. Older sheds with unknown panel or roofing materials get extra care: we don't disturb anything that could contain asbestos, and we recommend testing before demolition-style work.
Repair or replace — the honest answer
Local rot in a sound shed is very repairable: affected boards are cut out, new treated timber is spliced in, and the moisture source is fixed so the new wood doesn't follow the old. Structural rot in the frame can often be repaired with section replacements if the rest of the shed is worth saving. But when rot is widespread through the floor and frame, or the moisture source can't realistically be fixed, repairing becomes false economy and replacement is the better spend — and we'll say so rather than quote work that won't hold. If the cause is a sinking or uneven base, that has to be addressed first, because new timber in a moving shed won't last either. Every option is quoted with the full cost approved before work starts.
Weather, timing and aftercare
Rot repairs are weather-dependent — replacement timber needs dry conditions to treat and seal properly — so we schedule sensibly and tell you if the forecast must push the work back. Aftercare advice matters too: clearing debris from around the base, keeping the shed ventilated and fixing gutters all slow down future decay, though no repair can be guaranteed against rot forever.
Booking your assessment
Call or book through the website and tell us the shed's size and age, where you can see or feel soft timber, how long it's been developing and whether the base stays wet. You'll pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost of any work is quoted and approved before we start, with parts quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Rot in a wooden shed is rarely as simple as it looks — soft boards outside can hide sound timbers, and sound-looking boards can hide a frame that's failing. Our visit maps the real extent of the decay, explains what can be saved and what can't, and quotes a repair or replacement with the full picture in front of you.
What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about rotten wooden shed
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I treat shed rot myself?
Surface treatment of a small damp patch is a reasonable DIY job, but rot is usually worse behind the visible surface, and painting over soft timber just hides the decay. If the affected wood is in the frame, the floor or anywhere structural, cutting it out properly is a job for us — patches that leave rot in place spread it further.
How do you tell how far the rot has spread?
We probe the frame, floor and cladding systematically to map sound timber against decayed, check the base and ground for the moisture source, and inspect the roof and ventilation. You get an honest picture of what can be saved and what can't before we quote anything.
Is dry rot in a shed a risk to my house?
Dry rot can travel through damp timber and masonry if conditions suit it, so a severe case in a shed close to the house deserves proper attention. We assess what we find, flag anything we believe needs specialist treatment, and won't promise that a shed repair resolves it without further investigation.
Will repaired shed wood rot again?
We use treated timber and address the moisture source as part of the repair, which gives the shed its best chance — but no one can guarantee timber against future rot, especially outdoors. Keeping the base dry and the shed ventilated after the repair is the most useful thing you can do.
What will it cost to fix?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any parts quoted separately — and if replacement beats repair on value, we'll tell you that at the quote stage.
