Shed roofs come in several flavours — mineral felt, bitumen sheets, shingles, corrugated metal or plastic panels — and each ages differently. Knowing what you have, and what state it's in, is the difference between a sensible repair and money spent on the wrong fix.
How shed roof coverings fail
Mineral felt is the classic shed covering and the most common to fail: it dries out, cracks, blisters and lifts at edges and laps, especially on sheds that bake in summer sun. Torch-on or bonded sheet lasts longer but still splits at joints and where decking moves beneath it. Shingles lift and shed their grit as they age; corrugated metal corrodes at scratches and fixings; plastic panels crack in frost and discolour. Underneath all of them, the decking boards take the punishment — and a covering replaced over soft or sagging boards fails again quickly, which is why we always look beneath the surface.
What we assess
We examine the covering across its whole area — laps, edges, trims, fixings and any repairs previous owners have attempted — and the decking underneath where the covering allows or where it has already failed. We check the roof structure for sagging, the joints where roof meets walls, and the guttering or drip edges that should be keeping water off the walls below. Interior staining tells us where water has been travelling, which doesn't always match where it enters. And because the roof is the top of a system, we look at the walls and floor junctions for damage the roof has already caused.
Repair or re-cover
Localised failures — a lifted edge, a split lap, a few popped fixings — can often be repaired on the visit, resealing the weather line and securing the covering properly. When the covering is worn across large areas, re-covering is the honest answer: the old material comes off, the decking is checked and repaired where needed, and the new covering goes on with proper edge and lap detail. Felted roofs need dry conditions for the adhesive and finish to work, so weather matters and we schedule around the forecast rather than felt in the rain. Where the decking or rafters underneath are soft, those repairs come first — a new covering on rotten boards is money wasted. Every option is quoted with the full cost approved before work starts, and materials are quoted separately.
Limits and aftercare
We won't walk a fragile roof or improvise unsafe access — where the structure can't take weight we use appropriate access equipment, and if a roof needs scaffolding or a roofing specialist we'll say so plainly. Older sheds may have coverings or underlayers we treat with care: anything that could contain asbestos is not disturbed, and testing comes first. No covering lasts forever, and we can't guarantee a roof against future weathering — but a properly built roof with sound decking beneath, checked edges and good drainage gives the best service a shed roof can give. Keeping the roof clear of moss, leaves and overhanging branches is the aftercare that helps most.
It's also worth deciding what you want from the roof long term before we quote. A like-for-like re-cover in felt is the standard answer and suits most sheds; upgrading to a longer-lasting covering can make sense for a workshop or a shed that holds valuable kit, and we can talk through the trade-offs at the assessment. The right covering depends on the shed's use, its exposure and what the decking beneath will carry.
Booking your roof work
Call or book through the website and tell us the shed's size, age and covering type if you know it, what's failing and whether there's any water inside. You'll pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any parts quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A shed roof works hard every day of the year, and when the covering starts to fail it takes the whole building with it — wet decking, stained contents and rot spreading down the walls. Whether yours needs a small repair or a full re-cover, our visit starts with an honest assessment of the roof and everything beneath it.
What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about shed roof repair
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I re-felt a shed roof myself?
It's a common DIY job, and a small flat roof is within reach of a careful person with the right materials. Where it goes wrong is soft decking underneath, poor lap and edge detail and felt laid in damp conditions — all of which lead to leaks within a season or two. If you're unsure what's under the old covering, an assessment first is money well spent.
How do I know if my shed roof needs repairing or re-covering?
One or two small defects usually mean a repair; cracking, lifting and patching across large areas means the covering is at the end of its life and re-covering is the honest option. We assess the covering and the decking beneath it and give you a straight recommendation with a quote for each route.
Will you replace the boards under the felt if they're damaged?
Yes — that's part of doing the job properly. A new covering laid over soft or sagging decking fails quickly, so we check the boards when the old material comes off, repair what needs it, and quote that as part of the plan before proceeding, with materials quoted separately.
What weather do you need to do the work?
Roof coverings, especially felt, need dry conditions for adhesives and finishes to cure properly, and wind makes roof work unsafe. We schedule the work for a suitable window and will tell you plainly if the forecast means rescheduling — better a dry day next week than a roof that fails in October.
How much does it cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any materials quoted separately, so you know exactly what you're approving before we start.
