A neglected lawn is a story of small deferrals: one week the grass is a bit long, a month later it is knee-high and full of moss, and by autumn it looks like a meadow with ambitions. The good news is that lawns are resilient. Almost any lawn in the West Midlands can be brought back into decent condition — the trick is doing it at the right pace and the right time of year, not all in one violent afternoon.

Why lawns decline in the first place

Grass that is never cut grows tall and thin, shading out the young shoots at its base and letting moss, weeds and coarse grasses move in. Compacted soil from feet, cars and parked bins stops roots getting air and water, so the lawn struggles every time it is dry and stays soggy every time it is wet. Shade, thatch build-up, drought and hungry soil all play their part. None of this is permanent, but each cause needs a slightly different fix — which is why we look before we mow.

How we assess your lawn

We start by checking what we are actually dealing with: how deep the growth is, how much moss and weed has taken hold, whether the soil is compacted or waterlogged, how shaded the lawn is, and whether there are bare or dead areas that need separate treatment. We also note the time of year, because it changes everything. Feeding, scarifying, seeding and heavy cutting all have sensible windows — a lawn fed at the wrong time or scarified in the depths of winter does more harm than good, and we would rather schedule the right job for the right month than sell you a service that cannot work.

Bringing it back, step by step

Recovery usually starts with a high cut rather than a scalping — never more than about a third of the grass height off in one go, then progressively lower over successive cuts. From there it depends on the lawn: scarifying or raking out moss and thatch, aerating compacted ground, topdressing and overseeding thin areas, feeding when the season suits, and dealing with weeds honestly — by hand, by thickening the grass, or with treatment where we explain what it realistically can and cannot do. Some lawns bounce back in a few weeks of growing weather; tired ones take a season or two of steady care.

What we will not pretend

We will not promise you a bowling green, and we will not pretend chemicals can guarantee anything — results depend on soil, weather and aftercare, and we would rather under-promise than have you disappointed. If the lawn is beyond saving as grass and re-turfing is the honest answer, we will say so and quote that separately. And if moss keeps returning because the garden is heavily shaded or the ground stays wet, no amount of treatment fixes the underlying cause — we will explain what does.

Aftercare that actually matters

The weeks after a revival are when the lawn decides what it will become. Mow little and often rather than hard and rarely, water deeply in dry spells rather than sprinkling daily, and keep feet and furniture off new seed until it has taken. We will leave you with a short, plain-English list of what to do and when, so the work we have done keeps paying off.

How to book

Booking is simple — phone or website, with a note of the lawn's rough size, how long it has been untended and anything you already know about it, like drainage problems or heavy shade. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before we start. Seasonal treatments and materials are quoted separately so you can see exactly what you are choosing.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A lawn that has been left to its own devices usually looks worse than it is — long, patchy, mossy and intimidating, but rarely beyond help. The mistake most people make is attacking it all at once with a mower on its lowest setting. We work with the season instead, bringing the grass down gently and giving it what it needs to thicken up again.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about unmaintained lawn

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is my lawn too far gone to save?

Very few lawns are. Even long, mossy, patchy grass usually responds to a season of proper care — the main exceptions are ground that is permanently waterlogged or shaded, or grass that has completely died out. We assess honestly and will tell you if re-turfing is the better route.

What do you check before starting work on the lawn?

We look at the length and density of the grass, moss and weed levels, soil compaction and drainage, shade and any bare or dead patches. The time of year matters just as much, because feeding, scarifying and seeding all have seasons when they work and seasons when they are wasted effort.

Could I just cut it short myself and see what happens?

You could, but cutting a long lawn down hard in one go is the classic mistake — it scalps the crown and can kill off weak grass for good. Take no more than about a third of the height off per cut and work down gradually. If that sounds like several weekends of mowing, that is the part we do for you.

Will you use weedkiller or feed on my lawn?

Where treatment is the right tool we use it, but we do not promise results from chemicals — weather, soil and aftercare decide the outcome as much as the product does. Feeds and treatments are chosen for the season, applied correctly, and quoted separately from the labour so you know exactly what you are paying for.

How is the cost worked out for a lawn rescue?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how quickly you need the visit. Before we start, the full cost of the work is quoted and approved, with any feeds, seed, turf or materials quoted separately — so nothing happens on your lawn that you have not signed off.
