Maintenance on adjustable furniture is not complicated, but it is specific. The parts that wear are known, the places where cables fail are known, and the points that need lubricant are specified by the manufacturer. A check that works through them in order takes a fraction of the time of a breakdown repair and prevents a good share of them.

What a Check Covers

The frame and structure. We inspect rails, joints, brackets and mountings for distortion, cracking and looseness, and confirm the furniture sits level with its load spread evenly across castors or glides. A base that rocks is twisting slightly every time it moves, and that shows up later as binding.

The mechanism. Rollers, glides, pivots and pins are checked for wear, flat-spotting and seizure. Tracks are cleaned of hair, grit and the sticky residue that spilled drinks leave behind, because that debris is what turns a smooth glide into a grind.

Fixings. Every accessible fixing is checked for tightness. Loose fixings work-harden their holes, and a bracket that has been moving for a year is harder to put right than one caught early.

Cabling. We inspect the supply lead along its length, the low-voltage runs at their flex points, and every connector for corrosion and security. We check that cables are still clipped clear of the mechanism, since a clip that has come adrift puts a lead in the path of a moving part.

Electrical testing. The transformer output under load, the control box for signs of heat or moisture, and each motor's behaviour through its full travel. We are looking for a motor that is slowing, labouring or drawing more than it should — the earliest reliable sign of a failing actuator.

Controls. Handset buttons tested individually, batteries checked or replaced, lock functions confirmed working, and the display or indicators checked for faults.

Lubrication. Applied only where the manufacturer specifies, with the product they specify. General-purpose sprays are the wrong answer here: they attract dust and can soften nylon and rubber components.

Why It Is Worth Doing

The pattern with this equipment is that failures are cheap at the start and expensive at the end. A dry pivot becomes a worn bush, which becomes a binding mechanism, which makes the motor work harder, which ends with a failed actuator and sometimes a control box. A check that catches the dry pivot costs a fraction of the actuator.

There is also the safety side. Loose fixings, chafed leads and a frame that has begun to distort are all things that matter more on furniture that carries people, and all are easier to find on a planned visit than after a fault.

What It Is Not

A routine check is not a certification. We do not certify furniture as safe or suitable for a particular person's weight, size, mobility or medical needs — that is a matter for the user, their family and carers, and the manufacturer's stated limits. We do not issue compliance certificates, and we cannot promise that nothing will fail in future.

What we provide is an inspection, the maintenance the manufacturer calls for, and a plain report of what we found and what we would watch.

What You Can Do Between Visits

Keep the tracks and the floor around the furniture free of hair and grit. Check that cables have not come adrift and are not lying where the mechanism can catch them. Stop pressing a button when the furniture labours rather than holding it through the resistance. Use the furniture through its full range now and then, so nothing seizes through disuse. Do not add weight beyond what the manufacturer states, and do not use the furniture as storage.

If anything changes — a new noise, slower movement, a section that stalls under load — get it looked at then. That is the whole point of maintenance: the change is the message.

Safety Notes

Never put hands into a moving mechanism, and never reach under a raised section. If the furniture trips the electrics, smells hot or moves on its own, unplug it and stop using it until it has been checked, whatever the maintenance schedule says.

If someone is stuck in an awkward position, help them out safely, and use a manual release only where the manufacturer describes one and you are confident to use it. If they are in pain or distressed, call 999.

Booking a Check

Tell us the make and model, how long you have had the furniture, and anything that has changed recently. The booking fee is paid when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts. Any parts, such as rollers, batteries or a handset, are quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Electric furniture is usually only looked at when it stops, which means small problems are discovered at the point they become inconvenient ones. A routine check catches the worn roller, the loosening fixing and the chafing cable while they are still cheap to deal with — and it gives you an honest picture of how much life the furniture has left.

What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service

4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews

Proper job, no upselling

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes

Fine in the end

The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Job: Stair Lift Service

Would use again

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Control Panel Fault

Questions people ask about routine maintenance

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I do this maintenance myself?

Some of it. Cleaning the tracks, checking that cables are clipped clear, replacing handset batteries and keeping the area free of grit are all sensible. Do not open the control box or motor units, do not lubricate with a general-purpose spray, and never reach into a moving mechanism — the rest is engineer work.

What do you actually check?

We check the frame, joints, brackets and mountings, plus rollers, glides, pivots and tracks for wear. Every accessible fixing is checked, along with the supply lead, low-voltage runs and connectors. We test transformer output under load and each motor through its travel, check all handset functions and locks, then lubricate the points the manufacturer specifies.

Does a check certify the furniture as safe to use?

No. We inspect, carry out the maintenance the manufacturer calls for, and report what we found. We do not certify furniture as suitable for a particular person's weight, size, mobility or medical needs, and we do not issue compliance certificates — suitability is for the user, their family and carers, and the manufacturer's limits.

How often should electric furniture be checked?

It depends on use: a bed adjusted several times a day and a rise chair used by someone with limited mobility both work harder than occasional-use furniture. Ask us at the visit and we will suggest a sensible interval based on what we found, rather than quoting a figure that ignores how the furniture is used.

What does a maintenance visit cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We confirm the scope and quote the full cost for your approval before starting. Any parts needed, such as rollers, batteries or a handset, are quoted separately.
