An immersion heater uses an electrical element to heat water stored in a cylinder. If it stops working, the cause may be the element, thermostat, timer, supply or a problem elsewhere in the cylinder system. Maintenance Men can assess electrical work within competence, using safe isolation before permitted checks or repair. We do not ask customers to open covers, touch wiring or test live parts. If the system also involves a gas boiler, gas and combustion work remain outside our scope and are referred to a trusted Gas Safe registered partner.
Recognise useful signs without opening the unit
The water may be cold despite the immersion switch appearing on, may heat only during a particular schedule, or may become available when another heat source runs. A repeated electrical trip, burning smell, buzzing or visible water around the immersion boss needs careful attention. Note whether a timer indicator is lit and whether other electrical circuits are operating, but do not remove the immersion cover or use a meter. If the immersion circuit trips, leave it switched off rather than repeatedly resetting it. Water near the heater or its wiring is a reason to keep clear and report the situation when booking.
Safe isolation comes before electrical work
An immersion connection can involve mains electricity, and a cylinder holds hot water under a system-specific arrangement. We identify the circuit and isolate it safely before carrying out any electrical assessment or permitted work. We verify safe conditions using appropriate procedures; a wall switch alone should not be assumed to make internal wiring safe. If safe isolation cannot be established, we do not proceed with exposed electrical work. The cylinder’s thermostat and element are considered alongside the timer and supply, since replacing an element without checking its control may not resolve the symptom. Work is limited to our competence and suitable scope.
Identify whether the element or its controls are at fault
Depending on the installation and findings, the issue may be a failed element, thermostat, fused connection, timer setting or supply fault. We check relevant accessible components and explain evidence for a recommendation. We also consider whether the cylinder itself or another heat source is affecting the observed temperature. Compatibility matters: immersion length, connection type, thermostat arrangement and cylinder model can affect part selection. We identify and quote parts separately, subject to availability. We never promise an element replacement before diagnosis, and wider electrical or cylinder work may need a separate quote or a suitably qualified specialist if outside our competence.
Avoid damage and scalds
Do not remove the circular cover, pull wires, bridge a thermostat or attempt to loosen an immersion element. Stored water may be hot, and draining or opening a cylinder connection can cause flooding, scalding or system damage. Keep children away from switches if a fault is suspected. If you notice a burning smell, smoke or an electrical hazard, stop using the circuit and take appropriate urgent safety steps; call emergency services for fire. If water is near electrical equipment, keep away and do not touch it. Tell us about any trip, leak or smell before a visit.
Book an electrical assessment
Book online and state whether the immersion switch is on, whether it trips, if another heat source provides hot water, and any visible cylinder or control details. Do not remove covers to find a label. The booking fee is paid when booking; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost for approval before work starts, with parts and materials quoted separately as needed. The visit begins with assessment; if the problem exceeds our competence, we explain and recommend the appropriate next step.
Book online for an immersion assessment and tell us about any tripping, burning smell or water near the electrical connection.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A failed immersion can leave stored water cold, but the fault may also be a timer, thermostat, supply or cylinder issue. Immersion heaters involve electricity and hot stored water, so covers and wiring are not a DIY check. We assess within electrical competence, isolate safely and agree any repair before proceeding.
What our customers say about our heating & radiators service
5 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Fast, tidy and friendly
Booked the £220 booking-fee slot on Tuesday and got a message confirming the time the same morning. The cause was explained, the price agreed before any work started, and the job was done in about 46 minutes. Clean and tidy when they left.
Job: No Heating from Boiler
Turned up when they said
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 46 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Expansion Vessel Fault
Exactly what was quoted
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Airlock in Hot Water System

Questions people ask about immersion heater not working
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I remove the immersion cover to check the wires?
No. The heater contains electrical connections that can remain hazardous, and safe isolation must be verified. Leave covers and wiring untouched and book an assessment.
What will you check on an immersion heater?
Within electrical competence, we safely isolate and assess relevant controls, supply and heater components, while considering the cylinder symptoms. We explain whether a part or further work is needed.
What if the immersion circuit keeps tripping?
Leave it switched off and do not repeatedly reset it. Tell us about the trip when booking; if there is smoke or fire, use emergency services.
Could the timer be the reason the immersion does not heat?
Yes. A timer setting or control fault can prevent a heating period, while an element or supply fault can cause similar symptoms. The circuit and system need assessment.
How is the work priced?
The booking fee is paid when booking and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost for approval before work starts; parts or materials are quoted separately.
