Why a Boiler Stops Giving Heat
When a boiler appears to run but the radiators stay cold, the fault sits somewhere between the boiler and the radiators. The most common culprits are:
- Thermostat or control problems — dead batteries, a mis-set schedule, a room thermostat that has drifted out of calibration, or a broken signal between the thermostat and the boiler. The boiler never receives a call for heat.
- System pressure — if the pressure gauge has fallen below the manufacturer's minimum, most boilers lock out the heating as a protection. A slow leak elsewhere in the system is often behind it.
- Circulation failure — a worn or seized pump, or an airlock in the pipework, stops hot water reaching the radiators even though the boiler is firing.
- Motorised valve faults — on many systems a motorised valve directs water to the radiators. When the motor, actuator or microswitches fail, the boiler may heat the hot water cylinder happily while the heating circuit stays cold.
- Sludge and radiator build-up — heavy rust debris can settle in the system and block circulation, often leaving some radiators cold while others heat.
- Boiler internal faults — sensors, Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) and diverter valves inside the boiler can also stop the heating side working while everything else seems normal.
What Happens If You Leave It
A heating fault rarely improves on its own, and some underlying causes get worse with use. A system quietly losing pressure usually has a leak that is weeping water somewhere — under floors, behind radiator valves or inside the boiler — and prolonged running with low water can damage the pump. A pump that is struggling runs hotter and fails sooner. If sludge is restricting circulation, it continues to corrode radiators and valves from the inside. Getting the fault diagnosed early usually keeps the repair small and protects the rest of the system.
How We Trace the Missing Heat
We start with the simplest explanations, because they are the most common ones. That means checking the room thermostat, its batteries, its settings and any programmer or timer, then confirming the boiler's pressure gauge is within the manufacturer's range. From there we test whether the boiler actually responds to a call for heat, and whether the pump is running and moving water — which we can usually establish from the pipework and flow without opening the boiler's gas side. We check motorised valves for correct operation, feel which radiators heat and which do not, and look for signs of sludge or air in the system. The aim of the visit is a clear diagnosis: we tell you exactly what has failed and what it will take to put right.
Repairs We Can Carry Out
Maintenance Men is not Gas Safe registered and never carries out gas work, so our repairs are confined to the water side and the electrics of the system — and that covers the majority of no-heating faults. We can replace or repair thermostats and controls, resolve wiring and control faults, replace system pumps, repressure the system after fixing a leak, repair or replace motorised and diverter valves, power-flush badly sludged systems, and balance or bleed radiators so heat spreads evenly again. Any part we fit is quoted separately, and we will confirm compatibility with your boiler before ordering anything.
When the Fault Is on the Gas Side
If our checks show the boiler is receiving a proper call for heat and circulating water correctly, the fault may lie with components on the gas or combustion side — such as the gas valve, burner, ignition or flue. We diagnose within safe limits and can often narrow the cause down for you, but we do not open the boiler casing or adjust, repair or test gas components. In that situation we explain exactly what we found and recommend one of the trusted Gas Safe registered engineers we work closely with, who can lawfully complete that work. We hand over a clear summary so the Gas Safe engineer can pick the job up without starting from scratch.
Preventing a Repeat
A heating system that is kept clean, correctly pressurised and properly controlled is far less likely to fail mid-winter. We will happily advise on inhibitor levels to slow corrosion, radiator balancing, and thermostat placement or upgrades — such as smart controls — that reduce wear on valves and pumps. If your boiler is older and faults are becoming frequent, we can give an honest view on whether continued repair is sensible.
Book a Heating Diagnosis
Call or message us with your boiler's make, model and roughly how old it is, plus what the boiler and radiators are actually doing — for example whether the hot water still works, whether any radiators warm up, and what the pressure gauge reads. Same-day visits may be available when our diary allows, though we never promise one. We serve homeowners across the West Midlands and will give you a straightforward diagnosis and a firm quote before any repair begins.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A boiler that runs but leaves the radiators cold is miserable at any time of year, and worse when frost is on the way. The cause is often outside the boiler itself — a thermostat, a pump, a motorised valve or the system pressure. We will trace the fault step by step, repair the parts we are qualified to work on, and explain clearly if anything points to a gas-side issue for a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Questions people ask about no heating from boiler
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I fix a boiler that gives no heating myself?
It is sensible to check the obvious: thermostat batteries and settings, whether the programmer or timer is calling for heat, and whether the pressure gauge sits in the manufacturer's normal range. Do not open the boiler casing or attempt anything beyond those checks — boilers contain live electrics and gas components that must only be worked on by competent engineers.
What will you check during the visit?
We work through the heating path: thermostat and controls, system pressure, pump operation, motorised valves, and how evenly the radiators heat. We identify which component has failed and confirm the repair needed before starting, so you know exactly what you are approving.
What if the problem is inside the boiler's gas side?
We do not carry out gas work and are not Gas Safe registered. If the diagnosis points to gas or combustion components, we explain what we found and refer you to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer we work closely with, who can lawfully complete the repair. We can still handle any water-side or electrical part of the job.
My hot water works but the heating does not — is that a clue?
Yes, it is a very useful one. It often points to a diverter or motorised valve sticking on the hot water position, a heating-side control fault, or a circulation problem, rather than a total boiler failure. Tell us this when you book because it helps us arrive with the right parts to hand.
How much will the repair cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. After diagnosis we quote the full cost of the work and you approve it before we start. Any parts or materials are identified and quoted separately, so there are no surprises.
