Where Boiler Pressure Goes
A sealed heating system is filled with water under pressure, and that pressure only falls if water is escaping — or if something is letting it out deliberately. The usual causes are:
- Radiator and valve leaks — a weeping radiator valve, a pinhole in a radiator panel, or a slow drip from a pipe joint. Even a tiny seep adds up over days.
- Underfloor or concealed leaks — leaks under floors or inside walls show no visible water at all; the pressure gauge is often the only sign.
- The pressure relief valve — this safety valve discharges water outside when pressure rises too high. If it has opened repeatedly or has become worn, it can weep continuously and drag the system pressure down.
- The filling loop left open — an incorrectly closed or faulty filling loop can slowly pass water in and out, unsettling the pressure.
- The expansion vessel — if the vessel has lost its air charge, pressure swings sharply as the system heats and cools, and the relief valve discharges each cycle, eventually leaving the system low.
- Inside the boiler — internal seals and the pressure relief valve within the boiler can also leak, sometimes only when the system is hot.
Why Topping Up Is Not a Fix
Repressurising a system through the filling loop restores heating within minutes, which is why it is tempting to keep doing it. But every litre added brings fresh oxygenated water and dissolved minerals into the system, which accelerates corrosion inside radiators, pumps and valves. Meanwhile the actual leak keeps doing damage wherever it is — under a floor, behind a wall, or inside the boiler. A gauge that needs attention every week or two is telling you there is a fault that deserves proper diagnosis.
How We Find Where It Is Going
We start with the visible: radiator bodies, valve tails and joints, checking for weeping, staining or corrosion. Next we check the filling loop is fully closed and the pressure relief discharge pipe outside for signs of recent discharge — staining or dripping there is a strong clue. We then look at the expansion vessel, testing whether it holds its charge, because a failed vessel is one of the most common and most overlooked causes of pressure swings. If nothing shows externally, we can isolate sections of the system and monitor the pressure to narrow the leak down to a circuit or floor area. Throughout we work on the water side only, without opening the boiler casing or touching gas components.
Putting It Right
Once we have found the cause, we can usually put it right: replacing leaking radiator valves, sealing or replacing joint failures, repairing radiator pinholes, recharging or replacing expansion vessels, and repressurising the system to the manufacturer's specified cold-fill pressure. If the pressure relief valve itself has been damaged by repeated discharges, we can replace it where it sits on accessible system pipework. If the leak is inside the boiler and involves gas-side or sealed components we cannot lawfully work on — we are not Gas Safe registered and never carry out gas work — we will tell you exactly what we found and recommend one of the trusted Gas Safe registered engineers we work closely with to complete that part.
Protecting the System Afterwards
A system that has been repeatedly topped up often carries corrosion debris, so we may recommend adding inhibitor and, if the water is heavily discoloured, a power flush to clean it out. We will show you the correct cold pressure for your boiler and suggest a simple routine: glance at the gauge monthly, and call us if it drops noticeably rather than simply topping up again.
Booking Your Pressure Diagnosis
Contact us with your boiler's make and model and how often the pressure needs topping up — that frequency itself is a useful diagnostic clue. Same-day visits may be available but are never promised. You pay a booking fee when booking, labour is charged hourly at a rate depending on how soon you need us, and the full cost of the repair is quoted and approved before we begin. Parts are quoted separately. We cover the West Midlands.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A boiler whose pressure gauge keeps sagging into the red will usually lock out until it is topped up, and topping up alone never solves the problem — something is letting the water out. We will find where the pressure is going, repair the cause, and repressurise the system correctly so it holds. Where the loss turns out to involve the boiler's internal gas-side components, we will explain our findings and refer you to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer.

Questions people ask about low boiler pressure
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is it safe to top the boiler pressure up myself?
Yes, done carefully. Use the filling loop with the system cool, stop when the gauge reaches the manufacturer's normal cold range, and close the loop firmly. Topping up is a stopgap, not a repair though — if the pressure falls again within days or weeks, there is an underlying leak that needs finding.
How do you find a leak I cannot see?
Systematically. We check all visible valves, joints and radiator bodies, the relief discharge pipe, and the filling loop, then test the expansion vessel. If nothing external shows, we can isolate parts of the system and watch the gauge to narrow the loss down to a specific area, even when the leak is hidden under a floor.
Could the pressure loss be the boiler itself?
It can be. Boiler-internal seals and the pressure relief valve can leak, sometimes only when hot. If the evidence points inside the boiler, we explain what we found and refer you to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer we work closely with for that part, since we do not carry out gas work. Any accessible water-side repairs remain ours to do.
Why does pressure rise when heating and fall when cool?
Some swing is normal as water expands, but large swings usually mean the expansion vessel has lost its air charge. The vessel has nowhere to absorb the expansion, pressure spikes and the relief valve discharges, and the system then ends up low. Testing and recharging or replacing the vessel usually cures the whole pattern.
What will this cost?
A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. Once we have located the cause we quote the full repair cost, which you approve before we start. Any replacement parts or materials, such as valves or an expansion vessel, are quoted separately.
