What counts as surface patching

Surface patching is the repair of damage that lives in the top few millimetres of the wall: screw and plug holes, small anchor holes, dents and dings, chipped corners and hairline cracks in the plaster surface. It is cosmetic work with a proper method behind it — the difference between a patch you forget about and a patch that shows as a shiny ring under every coat of paint is preparation, the right material and patience with drying times.

What it is not: re-plastering, treating damp, or repairing cracks that come from movement in the building. Those are different jobs with different causes, and we will say so if that is what we find.

Assessing before filling

Every patch starts with a look at the hole and the wall around it. Size decides the filler — fine surface filler for nail holes and small dings, a stronger multi-purpose or powder filler for plug holes and masonry. Depth decides the approach: a deep hole is filled in layers, because one thick fill shrinks as it dries and dips below the surface. And the wall itself matters — plaster takes filler differently from plasterboard or painted masonry, and a blown or hollow-sounding patch around the damage changes the plan. Anything that looks like damp, spreading cracking or movement gets flagged honestly rather than filled over.

The filling process, step by step

First the hole is cleaned out: loose material, dust and crumbly edges gone, so the filler keys onto sound surface. Then the filler goes in — pressed in properly rather than skimmed across the top, built in layers where the hole is deep. Each layer is allowed to cure before the next, which is the step people skip and later regret. Once fully dry, the patch is sanded back flush with the surrounding wall, checked by feel as well as by eye, and any high or low spots are corrected. Most patches are done in a single visit; a large or deep fill may need a return once the final layer has cured, and we will tell you which applies before we start.

Cracks deserve a moment of honesty

A hairline crack along a plaster joint is usually just the surface flexing with the seasons, and it fills and stays filled. A crack that keeps coming back, runs step-like across corners, or sits alongside doors and windows that have started sticking is telling you something about the building, not the paint. We fill the first kind happily. The second kind we point out, explain what it may indicate, and recommend the right specialist — filling it would just hide the evidence.

After patching: drying, sanding and paint

Fresh filler wants time before it is painted — the filler product will state its own drying window, and we will tell you how long to leave it for your specific patches. Paint the surface too soon and the patch blisters or flashes darker through the finish. Paint matching and decoration are not included in a patching visit unless you have asked for them in advance and we have agreed; if you supply the paint, we can discuss a touch-up as a separate piece of work. Until then, a well-sanded patch is exactly what a decorator wants to find.

Booking a patching visit

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us; the full cost is agreed and approved before any work starts, with filler quoted separately if a particular job needs it. Same-day may be available for small patching jobs. When you book, a rough count of holes and their sizes helps — a dozen nail holes is a different visit from two anchor craters.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Small damage adds up: anchors left by an old TV bracket, dents from moving day, a hairline crack that appeared after a dry summer. None of it is structural, and all of it shows once you start painting. We patch the surface properly — the right filler for each hole, honest drying time, proper sanding — so the repair disappears under the finish instead of flashing through it.

Questions people ask about wall surface patching

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is it worth getting someone in for a few small holes?

For one or two nail holes, probably not — a tube of filler and a flexible blade will do it. It becomes worth a visit when the holes are bigger, the wall is plasterboard, the fill is deep enough to need layers, or there are enough of them that doing it well would eat your weekend.

What do you check before filling anything?

The size and depth of each hole, the wall material, whether the surrounding plaster is sound or hollow, and whether any crack is a simple surface one. Anything that looks like damp or movement gets flagged, not filled.

Can you match the existing paint on the patches?

Paint matching is not part of a patching visit unless it has been agreed in advance. Even matched paint can read differently over an aged wall, so the usual plan is: we fill, cure and sand, and you or we decorate afterwards as a separate, agreed piece of work.

How long before I can paint over the patches?

It depends on the filler and the depth of the fill — shallow patches are often ready within a day, deep layered fills need longer. We will give you a clear drying window for your specific patches before we leave, and the filler product's own instructions are the final word.

What does a patching visit cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how quickly you need the visit. Before work starts we agree the full cost with you and you approve it; any special filler or materials are identified and quoted separately.
