Why mirrors need a careful hand

A mirror is heavier than it looks and less forgiving than most things on a wall. Glass does not flex, so the moment a large mirror is let go at one corner it either drops or twists — and a twisting mirror can crack. The other complication is that mirrors are held in several different ways: screw-in clips at the edges, hidden Z-bars or French cleats behind the frame, double-sided adhesive pads, or generous lines of grab adhesive that grip far harder than people expect. Before anything moves, we work out which method is holding yours.

How we take the mirror down

The approach is always the same in principle: support the full weight before releasing anything. For a clipped or bracketed mirror, that means two points of support — one person holding the weight or the mirror braced safely while the fixings come free. Adhesive-fixed mirrors get the patient treatment: the adhesive is cut or peeled progressively rather than ripped, with the weight supported the whole time so the glass never carries itself. Large mirrors are a two-person job and we plan the visit that way — please mention the size when you book.

This is also the one removal where we ask you firmly to keep children and pets out of the room while we work, simply because of what is being handled.

Cleaning up what it leaves behind

Adhesive-fixed mirrors are rarely the messy part — the wall is. Removing grab adhesive or foam pads can pull the plaster face with it, and that changes the job: a small residue clean becomes a patch repair. We remove what can be removed cleanly, scrape back residue level with the surface, and then assess what the wall actually needs. Screw holes and clip points are filled as standard. Where the plaster surface has torn, we fill and feather the patch so it blends once painted — and we will tell you honestly if the damage is bigger than a patch.

Repairing the wall

The repair itself is the same discipline as any good wall repair: loose material out, dust cleared, the right filler for the hole, deep fills built in layers, proper curing time and careful sanding back flush. If the mirror was heavy and fixed into masonry, the holes are usually sound once the plugs come out; in plasterboard, clip fixings can leave crusted or torn spots that need a little more building up. Either way, the wall finishes level and ready for decoration — we do not paint unless that has been agreed separately with paint you supply.

Glass, safety and what happens to the mirror

We handle removal and repair, but we do not dispose of the mirror as part of a standard visit — plan where it is going, and if it is cracked handle it with gloves and wrap it before it goes anywhere. If a mirror cracks during removal, which is rare with a controlled approach but never impossible, we stop, make the area safe and clear the glass before anything else happens. The repair then continues on the wall, which is undamaged by a controlled crack in most cases.

Booking the removal

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit; the full cost is agreed and approved before any work starts, with filler or repair materials identified separately. Same-day may be available for straightforward removals. Tell us the mirror's approximate size and how it looks attached — clips, frame or stuck flat to the wall — and we will arrive with the right approach.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Mirrors are the one wall fixture where the removal matters as much as the repair — a large glass panel is heavy, awkward and unforgiving if it twists or drops. We take mirrors down in a controlled way, deal with the hooks, clips or adhesive holding them, and then repair whatever the wall is left with, from small holes to patches of sticky residue.

Questions people ask about mirror removal wall repair

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is it safe to remove a large mirror myself?

A small, light mirror on proper clips can be a DIY job with a helper. A large or heavy one is not — glass does not flex, adhesive-fixed mirrors resist then release suddenly, and the wall damage from a rushed removal is often worse than the removal itself. If the mirror is bigger than you can comfortably hold, get it done properly.

What do you check before starting the removal?

How the mirror is held — clips, bracket, adhesive or a combination — its weight and size, and the condition of the wall around it. That decides how many hands we need and how gently the release has to go.

What if the mirror is stuck on with strong adhesive?

Then the release is slower and more careful, and there is a real chance the plaster face comes away with the adhesive. We will flag that as we go, clean what we can and patch what is left — but we will not pretend a heavily glued mirror always leaves a perfect wall behind.

Can you rehang the mirror somewhere else afterwards?

Possibly, but it is a separate piece of work and needs its own assessment — the new wall has to take the weight with suitable fixings. Mention it when booking and we will discuss whether it fits the same visit or needs its own slot.

How much does mirror removal and repair cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how quickly you need us. We agree the full cost before work starts and you approve it, with any filler or materials quoted separately if they are needed.
