Furniture that has to carry real weight
A bookshelf's whole job is load. Shelves full of paper are heavier than they look — a metre of hardbacks can outweigh what the shelf supports are comfortable with — and a unit assembled out of square, or without its back panel properly fixed, will start to bow and lean under the first row of books. Building it for the load it will actually carry is the difference between a bookcase and a liability.
What the assembly involves
Bookcases range from simple open shelving to units with adjustable shelf pins, glass doors, drawer bases and library-style wall systems. Whatever the design, the carcass must be square, because every shelf sits level off it; the back panel has to be fixed flat and true, because it stiffens the whole structure; and adjustable shelves need their pins seated in matching holes so nothing tips when a shelf is loaded. We work from the manufacturer's instructions and check the shelf weight guidance rather than assume a shelf will carry anything you stack on it.
How we build
Everything is unpacked and checked against the parts list first, hardware sorted, and the carcass built square on a protected floor. The back is fixed while the unit is verified square, sides and shelves are fitted, and adjustable shelves are set to your spacing — you may want tall gaps for albums and short ones for paperbacks, and it is easier to decide with the unit standing. Feet are levelled to the floor, and the finished unit is checked for rock and twist before we call it done.
Fixing it to the wall
Loaded bookcases are exactly the furniture that tips. A tall unit pulled forward by a curious child or bumped by a hoover can come over with serious force, so we recommend securing tall or deep units to the wall where the wall is suitable and the fixing is agreed. We assess the wall's construction on site — solid masonry and plasterboard-on-stud need different anchors and give different confidence — and we will tell you honestly when a wall will not take a safe fixing rather than fit one that will not hold. Wall restraint is agreed per job, not assumed for every assembly.
Planning the shelf spacing
Shelf spacing is personal, and it is the part of a bookcase you live with: tall gaps for albums and box sets, short ones for paperbacks, one generous shelf for the printer or the record player. Decide roughly what lives on each shelf before we set the pins, because moving them after the unit is loaded is a job in itself. We will set the spacing to your answer and check each shelf for bow as it is loaded. If a shelf has to carry something genuinely heavy, tell us — moving it down a level is usually the simple, honest fix.

Loading it and booking
When you load the unit, put the heaviest rows on the lower shelves and respect any shelf weight limits in the instructions; if a shelf bows under load, move it down or reduce the span. Tell us about narrow stairs or tight rooms when booking, and flag any missing or damaged parts in advance so we can assess what can reasonably be done and whether manufacturer replacements are needed. To book, call Maintenance Men: a booking fee is paid on booking, labour is hourly with the rate depending on how soon you need us, and the full cost is agreed before work starts. Same-day may be available, and we are fully insured across the West Midlands.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Questions people ask about bookshelf assembly
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is a bookcase a job I can build myself?
A basic open bookcase is one of the fairer flat pack kits, provided you keep the carcass square and fix the back panel properly — that panel is doing structural work, not decoration. Glass doors, adjustable shelving and taller units are where it gets fiddly. If you are loading it with books rather than ornaments, having it built for that load is worth considering.
What do you check while assembling a bookcase?
We check the parts against the manufacturer's list first, then keep the carcass square as it goes together, because every shelf sits level off it. The back panel is fixed flat and true to stiffen the structure, shelf pins are seated in matching holes, and adjustable shelves are set to the spacing you want. We finish by checking the unit for rock and twist on your actual floor.
Should my bookcase be fixed to the wall?
Tall, loaded bookcases are one of the most common tip-over risks in a home, so we recommend restraint for tall or deep units. We assess whether the wall can take a suitable anchor — solid masonry and plasterboard on studs need different fixings — and only fit restraint where it is agreed and the wall is up to it. If the wall is not suitable, we say so plainly rather than fit something that will not hold.
How much weight can a shelf actually take?
It depends on the span, the material and the maker's specification, which is why we check the shelf load guidance in your instructions rather than guess. Short spans on supported shelves carry a lot; a long unsupported span of thin board will bow under hardbacks no matter how well it is built. Put the heaviest rows low, spread heavy books along the span, and move any shelf that starts to bow.
What does bookshelf assembly cost?
You pay a booking fee on booking, labour is charged hourly and the rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted for your approval before work starts. Multiple units in one visit are usually the most economical booking. If manufacturer replacement parts are needed, we identify them and they are quoted separately.
