How Water Reaches Your Wiring
Water finds wiring wherever the two share a route: the loft, where a slipped tile or failed tank soaks cable runs and joint boxes first; above ceilings, where bathroom and en-suite leaks travel along joists to the fittings below; kitchens, where appliance leaks meet sockets behind cabinets; and outside, where garden and porch fittings take the weather year after year. Even small, slow leaks matter — damp corrodes connections long before anything drips dramatically, and corrosion is where high resistance and heat begin.
What Water Does to Wiring, Step by Step
Water itself conducts well enough to cause trouble: it lets current leak between conductors and to earth, which trips RCDs and, without them, can leave parts live that should never be. Then corrosion takes over — copper dulls and greens, terminals corrode, and the joints that carried current cleanly start resisting it and heating. Insulation absorbs moisture and loses its insulating value. None of this reverses when the area dries: corroded connections stay corroded, and the damage waits for the next load to heat it. This is why dried-out flood wiring still needs testing and, more often than not, replacement of the affected sections.
What to Do if It Happens Now
If water is present or leaking near any electrical fitting, switch off at the consumer unit's main switch first — not individual sockets, because the danger is wherever water has travelled. Stand clear of any fitting that is wet, and of any socket or switch below the leak's path, and keep children and pets out of the affected area. If the ceiling below a leak is bulging, that is a structural emergency as well as an electrical one. Once the immediate source is contained and the power is off, book the earliest available visit: same-day slots are available for exactly this.
How We Assess Water Damage
The visit starts with confirming isolation, then mapping what got wet: which fittings, which cable runs, which junctions lie in the affected area — including ones above and below what you can see, because water travels. Corroded and stained fittings are opened and inspected; the cable and circuits involved are insulation-tested, because moisture and its damage show up clearly to instruments even where surfaces look dry. What can be dried, cleaned and re-terminated soundly is; what has corroded or absorbed water beyond recovery is replaced. You get the findings in plain terms and a quoted repair before any work starts.
The Repair and Drying-Out
Repairs replace what water ruined: corroded connections remade back to sound copper, affected cable runs replaced where insulation has been compromised, fittings changed where their interiors have been soaked, and the source of the moisture — the leak itself — flagged clearly so the plumber's work can follow. Where drying time is needed before re-energising, we say so and sequence the work accordingly. Every affected circuit is tested under load before power returns, and the consumer unit's RCD protection is verified, because it is precisely this kind of fault that RCDs exist for.
Aftercare That Prevents a Repeat
Water damage repeats when its cause repeats. We will tell you exactly where the water entered and what to watch for — staining, damp smells, a tripping RCD after rain — and, where outside fittings or bathroom zones were involved, what upgrades would keep moisture out next time.
When to Call Us
Call urgently for any leak or flooding near electrics, any RCD that trips during or after rain, fittings that have taken water however long ago, and any smell or scorching from a wet area. Water damage is never a wait-and-see job.
Book an Urgent Safety Visit Today

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Water and mains voltage make a bad combination, and wiring that has been soaked — by a loft leak, a burst pipe, a flooded kitchen or simply years of damp — cannot be trusted until it has been properly dried, tested and repaired. If water is still present or leaking near electrics, switch the power off at the consumer unit before anything else. Then book us: we find every wet or corroded section, replace what cannot be saved, and test the circuits back to reliable.

Questions people ask about water damaged wiring
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
What does repairing water-damaged wiring cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book and hourly labour at a rate that depends on urgency — water-related calls are often same-day. The full repair is quoted after assessment and approved by you before any work starts, so the cost is never a guess.
Can I just dry everything out and carry on?
No, and this is the one shortcut that bites hardest. Dried-out wiring that was soaked or corroded looks fine and fails hot: corrosion does not reverse with drying, and moisture-damaged insulation does not regain its value. Testing decides what can be saved — and the answer is usually less than it appears.
What will the electrician check after a leak?
Everything the water could reach, not just what visibly got wet: fittings in and below the affected area, cable runs through the same void, and the circuits' insulation resistance, which reveals moisture damage even when surfaces are dry. The consumer unit's RCD protection is verified too, since it is the safety net for exactly this fault.
Is it safe to touch a light switch after a ceiling leak?
Not until the circuit has been checked. Water travels along joists and can reach switch or socket positions below the leak even when they look dry, and a damp fitting can be live at its surface. Leave the power off at the consumer unit until an electrician has tested the affected circuits.
My RCD keeps tripping only when it rains — why?
That pattern is a classic sign of water reaching wiring or a fitting — an outside light, a cable entry, a gutter leak finding a junction. Each trip is the RCD catching real leakage current. We will trace where the water is getting in, repair the affected wiring, and point you to fixing the entry point.
