Why Outdoor Lights Flicker

Flickering means the current is being interrupted or varied, and outdoors there are several likely reasons:

  • A loose connection — at the fitting, in a joint, or at the terminal — makes contact intermittently, especially when the wind moves the cable or the fitting.
  • Water or damp in a fitting — moisture across a connection varies the current as it dries and re-wets, so flickering that follows the weather is a big clue.
  • A failing lamp or LED driver — LEDs live on their drivers, and a driver on its way out produces pulsing, strobing or dimming before it dies completely.
  • Dimming devices and mismatched lamps — an indoor dimmer used outdoors, or an LED lamp not suited to the circuit, flickers by design mismatch rather than fault.
  • A struggling circuit — overloaded runs, long thin cable or a weak connection upstream can dim everything when another load starts.

Why Not to Ignore It

Intermittent connections generate heat — each break and re-make of contact is a tiny arc that burns the terminal a little more. Damp that flickers a light today can trip the RCD next month, and a driver that pulses now fails completely soon. Flickering is one of those faults that is cheap when investigated early and expensive when left, because the connection keeps degrading between the flickers.

How We Diagnose It

We start with the pattern. Flicker on all lights points upstream — the supply, the circuit or a shared connection. One fitting flickering points to that fitting: its lamp, driver, connections or seal. We check the circuit and its protection, test the supply stability, then open and inspect the fittings involved, looking for heat marks, corrosion and damp. Connections are tested for tightness and resistance rather than wiggled hopefully. You will be told exactly what is causing the flicker and given a firm price for the fix.

How We Fix It

The fix depends on the cause, and it is always at the source. Loose or burnt connections are remade cleanly with sound terminals; a water-affected fitting is replaced with a properly sealed weatherproof (IP-rated) unit and its wiring checked; a failing driver or lamp is replaced with the correct rated part. If the cause is a mismatch — the wrong dimmer, the wrong lamp type — we will set the circuit up so the lamps are driven as intended. If the flicker comes from the supply side, we trace and correct that instead of swapping fittings that were never the problem. Everything is tested under load and in the conditions that used to trigger the fault.

Aftercare and Prevention

Steady outdoor lighting comes from sound connections and dry fittings. After replacing or repairing anything, keep an eye on it through the first wet spell — flicker that returns with rain means damp is still getting in somewhere. Check that lamps and any future replacements match the circuit, and resist adding lights to a run that is already long or already flickering; the problem compounds.

When to Call Us

Book a routine visit for any persistent flicker, pulsing or dimming, and mention whether it happens in all weather or only when wet or windy — that detail shortens the diagnosis considerably. Book urgently if the flickering comes with a burning smell, heat at the fitting, scorch marks, or an RCD that trips: switch the circuit off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely and call us the same day.

Book Your Flickering Light Diagnosis Today

We cover the West Midlands and diagnose flickering outdoor lighting as routine work, with appointments around your week and same-day slots where available. Call or book online and describe the pattern — one light or many, dry weather or wet, LED or halogen. We will find the cause and stop the flicker for good.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Outdoor lights that flicker, pulse or cut out in the wind are telling you something: a connection somewhere is not making solid contact. It might be as simple as a tired lamp, or as serious as water reaching a connection. We diagnose the cause properly, fix it at the source, and leave you with steady light rather than another season of squinting.

Fixed it, but took longer than expected

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about flickering outdoor lights

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Could it just be the bulb?

Sometimes, yes — a tired lamp or a cheap LED with a weak driver flickers on its own. But if changing the lamp makes no difference, or if several lights flicker together, the cause is a connection, damp or the circuit, and swapping bulbs will not help. We will tell you which situation you are in within minutes of testing.

Why does it flicker more in wind or rain?

Wind moves the cable and fittings, so a loose connection makes and breaks contact — flicker in gusts is a classic loose-terminal sign. Rain flicker points to moisture reaching a connection inside a fitting. Both patterns are useful: they tell us roughly where to look before we open anything.

Is a flickering light dangerous?

It can become so. An intermittent connection arcs slightly at every make-and-break, generating heat that damages the terminal over time, and damp flicker means water is already inside a fitting. If you notice heat, smell, or scorching along with the flicker, switch the circuit off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely and book urgently.

What will this cost to fix?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.

Our LED lights flicker even though they're new — why?

LEDs are fussier about how they are driven than older lamps. A dimmer or transformer that suits halogen can make LEDs pulse or strobe, and very cheap LED lamps often have poor drivers. We check the driving side of the circuit first — the transformer, driver or dimmer — before condemning the fittings themselves.
