What External Power Installation Covers

Anything beyond the house walls that needs electricity gets its supply this way:

  • Outbuildings — sheds, garages, workshops and garden offices needing sockets, lighting and equipment supplies.
  • Garden equipment — pond pumps and filters, greenhouse heaters, irrigation systems and electric gates.
  • Garden sockets and lighting — the everyday outdoor power points and lighting covered on their own pages, but often installed together with a bigger scheme.
  • Future capacity — supplies designed with headroom, so the freezer in the garage or the workshop tools you plan to buy do not overload the circuit later.

Why It Needs Designing, Not Just Running

An external supply is the most demanding circuit in a home: long cable runs, exposure to weather and moisture, mechanical damage from garden life, and loads that range from a lightbulb to a workshop of tools. The cable must be sized for the load and the run length (voltage drops over distance), protected against damage along its route, and protected by an RCD at the supply end. Supplies installed without this thinking are the ones that trip constantly, dim under load, or fail the first hard winter. We size, route and protect the run for what you will actually use it for — and what you might use it for later.

How We Plan the Installation

We start with your plans for the space: what will run out there, now and in future, and where the sockets and switches should sit. We survey the route from your consumer unit — through the house, under the garden or along boundaries — and agree it with you, minimising digging and disruption. We check the consumer unit's capacity and protection, and explain honestly what is needed if an upgrade is required. You approve the full plan and price before anything is started.

How We Install It

Cable is selected and sized for the load and the distance, then routed cleanly: protected where it could be damaged, buried at proper depth where it crosses open ground, and entering buildings through sealed, glanded penetrations. In the outbuilding, the supply lands on a proper small consumer unit with its own RCD protection, feeding sockets and lighting positioned where you will use them. Everything exposed to weather is weatherproof (IP-rated) equipment. The whole installation — insulation, continuity, RCD operation, the works — is tested before it is signed off, and we make good every surface and trench we disturb.

Aftercare and Using the Supply

We label everything at both ends — what feeds what, and which switches isolate the supply — and show you how it works. Use the sockets as designed, keep lids closed between uses, and avoid overloading a single run with high-draw equipment. If the supply ever trips, note when and what was running; that pattern makes any future diagnosis quick. Ask us at the end about anything you plan to add later so the headroom is confirmed.

When to Book the Installation

Book when the plan is firm — before surfaces and landscaping are finished if you are building or renovating, because cabling goes in far more easily before than after. Book earlier rather than later if the outbuilding is new; getting the supply in during construction is simpler for everyone.

Book Your External Power Installation Today

We install external power supplies across the West Midlands, from a single shed feed to full garden-office and workshop installations, with visits arranged around your schedule. Call or book online and describe the space, what it will power, and how far it is from the house — we will survey, agree the price before starting, and leave you with power out there that behaves like power indoors.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Sheds, garages, greenhouses, pond pumps and garden offices all need power that does not depend on a dangling extension lead. External power installation means a proper cable run from your consumer unit, correctly sized and protected, ending in sockets and lighting that work whatever the weather. We design the supply around how you will use the space, then install and test it end to end.

What our customers say about our electrical service

4.6 out of 5 from 11 reviews

Does what it says on the tin

No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.

Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement

Fixed it, but took longer than expected

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights

Turned up when they said

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about external power installation

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

What size supply does a shed or garage actually need?

It depends on the load, not the building. A few lights and a socket for a mower needs far less than a workshop of power tools, a freezer and a heater. We calculate the load including what you plan to add later, then size the cable and protection to suit — an undersized supply is the most common reason garden power disappoints.

Can I run power to my shed myself?

Long buried cable runs, consumer unit connections and RCD protection are not a good DIY pairing — the common failure is a supply that trips every wet spell because a joint or gland was not sealed, and buried faults are miserable to find. We size, route, protect and test the run so it works in every season, and we record the route for you.

Will the supply be protected against electric shock?

Yes — that is central to the design. The supply is RCD-protected at the consumer unit, and the outbuilding usually gets its own RCD as well, so any fault trips the power in milliseconds rather than putting anyone at risk. We test the RCD's actual operation before we leave, not just assume it.

What does an external power installation cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.

How long will the installation take?

It depends on the distance, the route and how much of it is buried or concealed — a simple garage feed is often a day, while longer garden runs take longer. We give you a realistic timescale with the quote, including the trenching and making-good, and we keep disruption to the route we agreed.
