The rubber seal around a washing machine door, often called the door gasket, works hard every single wash. It flexes thousands of times, takes constant soaking, and collects everything from coins to hair clips in its folds. When it leaks, water appears at the bottom front of the machine, typically during the wash or early in the cycle. It is a common fault, and one with a well-defined fix – provided the seal really is the culprit.

Why door seals leak

Several distinct problems produce the same symptom. Objects left in pockets, especially bra underwires, coins and nails, work into the seal folds and puncture or tear the rubber. The rubber itself perishes over the years, developing splits that open under pressure. Mould and soap scum build-up prevents a clean seating and lets water wick past. Sometimes the fault is not the seal at all: a misaligned door, a damaged door hinge or glass, a leaking detergent drawer running down the front, or an internal hose weeping behind the seal all mimic a gasket leak. That is why we inspect rather than assume.

How we diagnose the fault

With the power and water safely isolated, we examine the whole seal, folding back each section to look for splits, punctures and trapped objects. We check the door glass and hinge alignment, and the inner drum for burrs or damage that could be abrading the rubber. We look for water tracks on the cabinet that show whether the water truly comes from the seal or is travelling from elsewhere – the drawer and internal hoses are checked before we commit to a seal replacement. Running a short controlled test with the cabinet panel off lets us watch the seal under real conditions when needed.

Repair, clean or replace

Not every leaking seal needs a new one. Trapped objects are simply removed; a seal with a small trapped-object nick may sometimes be assessed for continued service, but a tear usually means replacement, because a compromised seal fails again at the worst moment. Mouldy or scaled seals can respond well to a thorough clean and care advice. Genuine replacement is a real job: the seal is clamped front and back, often requires panel removal, and must be fitted correctly to avoid an instant repeat. Seals are model-specific, so we check availability and cost for your exact machine and quote before ordering anything. If your machine is old and the seal is dear or scarce, we will give you an honest view on whether replacement makes sense.

Care, safety and prevention

Until the visit, keep using the machine off if the leak is active, and avoid the temptation to tape or glue the rubber – adhesives rarely hold against hot soapy water and can complicate the later fit. Going forward, check pockets properly, keep the door ajar between washes to let the seal dry, and wipe the gasket folds occasionally to prevent mould. Never run a cycle with the door visibly not seated. These habits extend seal life considerably and cost nothing.

Arranging the visit

Contact Maintenance Men by phone or the website with the brand and full model number – door seals are strictly model-specific, so the model matters more here than for almost any other fault. Tell us when the water appears and roughly how much. The booking fee is paid when you book, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts. Same-day attendance may be possible but is never guaranteed. If fitting turns out to be a bigger job on your model, we will tell you what it involves before starting.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Water trickling from the bottom front of a washer during a cycle often points to the door seal, though not always. Objects trapped in the folds, perished rubber and mould damage all cause seal leaks. We diagnose properly first, because a new seal fitted to the wrong fault solves nothing.

Questions people ask about door seal leak

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I fix a leaking door seal myself?

Cleaning the folds and removing trapped objects is reasonable DIY with the machine unplugged. Replacing the seal is a different matter: it involves panel removal and careful clamping front and rear, and a badly fitted seal leaks immediately. We recommend leaving replacement to an engineer.

How do you confirm the seal is the leaking part?

We isolate the machine, inspect the entire gasket for splits and trapped objects, check the door and drum edge, and rule out the detergent drawer and internal hoses by tracing the water's path. Only when the seal is confirmed as the source do we quote a replacement.

Are door seals available for every washing machine?

Seals exist for most current models, but availability and price vary considerably, and some older or uncommon machines have scarce parts. Give us the brand and model number when booking and we will check availability before you commit to anything.

Why does the seal keep going mouldy?

Mould thrives where the seal stays damp and detergent residue builds up. Keeping the door ajar between washes, wiping the folds occasionally and using the right amount of detergent for your water hardness all help. A mouldy seal can also stop seating cleanly and begin to leak, so it is worth staying on top of.

What does a seal replacement cost?

You pay a booking fee when booking and an hourly labour rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The seal itself is a separate, model-specific part quoted after diagnosis, and nothing is started until you approve the full cost. No figures can be given before we know your model.
