Hard water leaves calcium carbonate behind every time it is heated or evaporated, and over months that deposit insulates heating surfaces, narrows waterways and blocks steam passages. The appliance does not fail dramatically; it simply becomes slower, weaker and less effective. Descaling is the remedy, and it is one of the few maintenance tasks that genuinely restores performance rather than merely tidying up.
What scale does inside an appliance
On a kettle element, scale acts as insulation: heat has to pass through the deposit before it reaches the water, so boiling takes longer, the element runs hotter and its life shortens. In a coffee machine, scale narrows the thermoblock and group passages, so flow drops and temperature becomes unstable, and the coffee tastes flat or bitter. In a steam iron, scale blocks the soleplate vents and the steam chamber, producing sputter, drip or no steam at all. In a steamer or a combination appliance, the same mechanism applies to every heated water path.
Why the method matters
Descaling solutions are mild acids, and they attack scale faster than they attack metal — but they will still damage seals, aluminium and coated surfaces if left too long or used at the wrong strength. That is why the maker's concentration and dwell time matter, and why "stronger must be better" is the wrong instinct. Thorough rinsing afterwards is equally important: residual acid keeps working on seals and will taint the next few litres of water through the appliance. On appliances with anti-calc cartridges, the cartridge is replaced rather than descaled around.
What the visit involves
We identify the appliance type and its recommended descaling method, then check whether scale is genuinely the cause before starting — a kettle that will not heat at all may have a failed element rather than a scale problem, and descaling will not help. The descale is carried out with the correct solution at the correct strength, followed by repeated flushing and a check of the waterways or vents. Afterwards the appliance is tested: boil time, flow rate, steam quality or brew temperature, depending on type. If performance is unchanged, the fault lies elsewhere and we say so.
Kettles, coffee machines and irons differ
Kettles are the simplest: fill to the mark, add descaler, boil, stand as instructed, rinse several times and repeat if the deposit is heavy. Coffee machines need the descale run through the machine's own programme, with the water tank, group and steam circuit all included, and the machine rinsed until the water runs clear. Irons need the chamber descaled, the vents cleared and the soleplate cleaned, with care not to scratch the coating. Each has its own sequence, and following the wrong one can leave scale in a passage you cannot see.
What descaling cannot do
Descaling removes deposits. It does not repair a failed element, a worn pump, a perished gasket or a thermostat that no longer switches. If an appliance has been badly scaled for years, the damage may already be done to the element or the seals, and we will be straightforward about that rather than presenting a descale as a cure. Where a part has failed behind the scale, the part is identified and quoted separately.
Safety
Unplug before descaling, and let the appliance cool unless the instructions say otherwise. Never use a descaling product not intended for the appliance, never mix descalers with other cleaners, and keep them away from skin and eyes. Do not immerse a base unit or put descaler into a water tank that feeds an electrical pump without following the maker's procedure. Rinse thoroughly, and do not use the appliance for drinking water until the flush is complete.
Booking
Book online with the appliance type and model, and say how long the problem has been developing. The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work begins, with any parts identified and quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Limescale is the quiet cause of a great many appliance complaints: kettles that take forever, coffee that tastes flat, irons that sputter instead of steaming. Descaling removes it safely when it is done to the maker's method. Done carelessly, it damages seals and leaves residue. Our visit covers the descale and a check that scale was the whole problem.

Questions people ask about descaling appliance
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I descale at home with vinegar?
Sometimes, if the maker allows it, but neat vinegar is harsher than a purpose-made descaler and can affect seals and metal. Follow the manufacturer's recommendation, dilute as instructed and rinse thoroughly afterwards.
What is included in the visit?
Confirming scale is the actual cause, descaling with the correct solution and method for your appliance, flushing the waterways, clearing vents where relevant, and testing performance afterwards. If performance is unchanged afterwards, the fault is not scale.
Is descaler dangerous?
It is a mild acid and should be handled with care — keep it off skin and eyes, never mix it with other cleaners, and rinse the appliance fully before use. Keep it away from children and store it as the label directs.
My kettle is scaled but also slow to switch off. Will descaling fix that?
Descaling may restore normal boiling behaviour, but a switch or steam sensor fault can produce the same symptom. We test the appliance after descaling, and if the fault remains it is a part issue rather than scale.
What does it cost?
The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost and you approve it before work begins; any parts needed are identified and priced separately.
