Same-day intercom power failure

Intercom systems run on low-voltage power derived either from a dedicated supply unit or from the building's electrical system via a transformer. When that power path fails, the whole system goes dark, and the cause is usually one of a short list: a failed plug-in adapter or transformer, a tripped breaker or blown fuse, a loose or corroded connection, or a failed power supply unit serving the system.

Why intercoms lose power

Plug-in adapters fail regularly — they are cheap components running continuously for years, and heat eventually kills them. Transformers in older wired systems fail the same way. Breakers trip and fuses blow, sometimes because of a genuine fault elsewhere in the system drawing excess current — which is important, because replacing a fuse without finding why it blew just destroys another fuse. Corroded or loose terminals interrupt power, particularly in damp communal areas or entrance panels exposed to weather. Power surges from storms and grid switching destroy adapter electronics. And occasionally the fault is upstream of the intercom entirely: a tripped circuit in the consumer unit or a failed socket.

How we diagnose a power failure

We work from the source outwards. First we check whether the fault is one handset or the whole system — a single dead handset points locally; a system-wide failure points to the supply. We verify the socket or circuit feeding the system, test the adapter or transformer's output, inspect the supply unit and its connections, and check for signs of surge damage or overheating. Where a fuse or breaker has tripped, we investigate what caused it before restoring anything — repeatedly resetting a supply that keeps tripping is how small faults become bigger ones. We also confirm nothing has been plugged into the system incorrectly, which happens more often than you would think.

Repairs and safety

Typical fixes are a replacement adapter or transformer, re-terminating corroded connections, replacing a failed supply unit, or clearing the underlying fault that tripped the supply. Parts are quoted separately, and the full cost of the work is approved before we start. Mains-derived supplies make this engineer work — the input side of an intercom power supply is mains voltage, and that is not DIY territory. In shared buildings, the system supply is communal equipment: permission from your landlord or managing agent is normally needed, and we will not work on shared systems without it. We never force doors or bypass security to access panels.

What you can check yourself

If the system's supply plugs into a socket, test that socket with another device and check whether the adapter's indicator light, if it has one, is on. Check your consumer unit for a tripped breaker — one reset is reasonable; repeated resets are not. Beyond that, leave it to us: intercom supplies can involve mains wiring.

Honest expectations

We diagnose first and quote second, so no cost or repair time can be promised before we test the system. If a tripping supply indicates a fault elsewhere — in the panel, the release circuit or the cabling — the repair may be larger than a simple adapter swap, and we will explain that once we know.

When to book

Call when the intercom has gone completely dead, when it died after a storm or power cut, when the supply keeps tripping, or when power is intermittent. Tell us whether the whole system or one handset is affected, whether the supply is plug-in or hard-wired, and the system make if known.

A power failure silences everything at once, which makes it the clearest fault of all to trace. Get in touch and we will find where the supply fails and quote the repair for your approval.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

When an intercom loses power entirely, every other symptom disappears with it: no speech, no picture, no release. That makes the power path the first thing to test, and often the cheapest thing to fix. We trace the supply from the socket or distribution board through to the panel and handsets, find where it fails, and quote the repair before any work begins.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

5 out of 5 from 7 reviews

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about intercom power failure

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I restore intercom power myself?

You can safely test the socket with another device and reset a tripped breaker once. Do not open adapters, transformers or the panel — the supply input is mains voltage. Repeatedly resetting a tripping supply can make a small fault worse, so call us if it trips again.

What do you check on a power failure visit?

We establish whether the fault is one handset or the whole system, verify the socket or circuit, test the adapter or transformer output, inspect the supply unit and connections, and investigate the cause of any tripped supply before restoring it. The repair is quoted and approved before work starts.

Could a power surge have damaged the intercom?

Yes — surges from storms and grid faults commonly destroy adapters and supply units. If the failure followed a storm or outage, tell us when booking; it focuses the diagnosis, and the repair is often a straightforward supply replacement.

Why did the supply keep tripping before the intercom died?

A supply that trips repeatedly usually means something in the system is drawing excess current — a failing component or a fault on the wiring. We find and fix that cause rather than just resetting the supply, because repeated resets risk further damage.

What does it cost to repair?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. After diagnosis we quote the full cost before starting, with parts like adapters, transformers or supply units quoted separately, and nothing proceeds until you approve it.
