An intercom that cannot open the gate is an intercom reduced to a speaker. Visitors ring, you answer, you press the button, and nothing happens — and every delivery, guest and taxi becomes a walk to the gate in person. The fault sits somewhere in the chain between the handset in your home and the gate's control board, and the visit exists to find precisely which link has failed.

How Intercom-to-Gate Access Works

In a wired system, the gate station connects to the internal handset, and the handset's release button sends a signal down a wire pair to the gate control board, which opens for as long as the release is held or for a set time. Wireless and app-based systems replace the wire with radio or your home network. Every link in that chain — power, connection, button, relay, board input, settings — must work, and any one of them failing produces the same symptom: ring works, open does not.

Common Causes We Find

Failed or corroded wiring between handset and gate is the classic cause, especially where cables run outdoors or through damp walls. Beyond wiring, we find failed relays or board inputs, handsets that have lost their programming, power supplies to the intercom that have sagged, wireless systems suffering from range or interference problems, and settings on the control board that have been changed or lost after a power event. On app-based systems, the usual suspects are network changes — a new router, a changed password, a hub that needs re-pairing.

Shared Buildings and Permissions

If your intercom serves a shared entrance or the gate and system are owned by a landlord or management company, permission may be needed before we alter the system, and we will flag that during booking. What we never do is force doors or bypass security to work around a fault — the repair is the answer, not the workaround.

How We Assess the Fault

We test the intercom's audio first to confirm the call path works, then trace the release path specifically: the button, the connection from handset to board, the board's input and its settings, and the gate's actual response. For wireless and app systems we check signal strength, pairing and power at each device. We also look at physical condition — water in a gate station, sun-damaged cabling, corroded terminals — because outdoor equipment degrades in ways that show up first in the release function.

Repair Options

Repairs range from remaking a corroded connection, replacing a failed handset or power supply, and reprogramming a lost configuration, through to replacing a gate station or upgrading the release path on the board. For app-based systems, fixes often involve the network side: relocating a hub, improving WiFi coverage at the gate, or re-pairing devices. Parts are quoted separately and nothing proceeds without your approval. Where your system is old and parts are discontinued, we will set out upgrade options honestly, including what intercom brands integrate well with your existing gate controls.

What We Cannot Promise

We do not guarantee the availability of third-party services — app platforms, cloud services or your broadband are outside our control, and we will say so when a fault depends on them. What we do deliver is a system we have tested end to end, with the release path proven from every device you use.

Security Worth Preserving

A faulty release path is sometimes tampered with in frustration, but bypassing the intercom or gate's safety devices is never the answer, and we will not do it. After repair we test the release from every entry point, confirm the gate still obeys its photocells and safety edges, and check that auto-close timing matches how you actually use the entrance.

When to Call Us

Book a visit when the intercom rings but will not release, when the release works only from one handset or one device, or when the function disappeared after a storm, power cut or network change. Tell us the intercom make and model, how many handsets or devices you use, and whether the audio still works.

Booking Your Visit

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the repair is quoted and approved before we start, with parts quoted separately. Book by phone or on our website; same-day visits may be available.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

When visitors ring and the gate does not open, delivery drivers leave, guests wait in the rain and the whole point of the intercom disappears. Our visit traces the chain from the gate station to the gate's controls and finds exactly where the link is broken.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

5 out of 5 from 7 reviews

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about intercom gate access failure

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is there anything I can check myself first?

Yes — confirm whether the intercom audio still works (which separates the call path from the release path), try the release from every handset or device you own, and check whether the fault began after a power cut, storm or router change. Do not open the gate station or handset; the internal wiring is engineer territory.

What do you check on an intercom access fault?

We test the call path and then trace the release path end to end: the release button, wiring or wireless link, the control board's input and settings, and the gate's response. For app-based systems we also check the network, hub pairing and signal strength at the gate. You get a clear answer on which link failed.

Our intercom is shared with other flats — can you still help?

Yes, but permission from the landlord or management company may be needed before we alter shared equipment, and we will flag that when you book. We work carefully around shared systems and never force doors or bypass security to get a result — a proper repair is the only approach we take.

Could I just use my phone app instead of fixing the intercom?

You could, if your gate system supports app access, and we can advise on compatibility after diagnosis. But the intercom's release path is still worth repairing — visitors who do not have the app, guests and older relatives all rely on it, and a gate that opens only one way is only half an entrance system.

What does the repair cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book. Labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us, and the full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start. Any parts — handsets, power supplies or a new gate station — are quoted separately.
