Lawns rarely start uneven; they become uneven. Ground settles, moles mine, worm casts accumulate, heavy feet and mower wheels compress the same lines year after year, and slowly a lawn that was flat becomes a rumble strip. The good news is that almost any bumpy lawn can be brought back level — the important part is matching the fix to the cause, because a shallow bump from worm activity and a sunken trench from a long-removed drain pipe need very different treatment.
Why lawns become uneven in the first place
Some causes are cosmetic and creeping: worm casts and thatch building up in the thatch layer, molehills pushed up and flattened but never properly cleared, and the natural freeze-thaw movement of clay soils that heaves ground up each winter. Others are structural: backfill over an old excavation settling over decades, a filled-in pond or bed sinking slowly, garden equipment parked in the same spot compacting hollows, or water flowing along a low line and scouring it deeper each winter. And some are warning signs — a sunken line that deepens every year may trace a collapsing drain or service trench, and that is worth identifying before any levelling is done on top of it.
How we assess the bumps
We start by walking the lawn and reading its history: where the high spots and hollows are, whether they follow patterns — a line of moles, a route to the shed, a wet track — how deep the variations are, and how the lawn is used. We check drainage, because levelling a lawn without fixing the reason water sits in the hollows just moves the puddles. We also lift a couple of spadefuls to see what the ground is actually made of, since topdressing over solid clay behaves very differently from topdressing into open soil. Only then do we recommend an approach, because the depth of the unevenness decides the method.
Shallow levelling: topdressing
For gentle bumps of an inch or two, topdressing is the classic fix: a sandy loam mix is worked over the lawn, swept down into the grass with the back of a rake so the grass shows through, and the turf grows up through it over the following weeks. It is done in the growing season when the grass can respond, usually in stages — a lawn dropped by three inches of topdress in one go suffocates, so deep hollows are filled over two or three seasons rather than one. Done properly, topdressing also improves the soil structure underneath, which helps the lawn in every other way.
Deep hollows and bad bumps: lifting and regrading
Where the ground has sunk well below the surrounding lawn, or a bump is too proud to bury, the honest fix is to lift the turf, add or remove soil, and relay it — carefully matched back so the seams disappear. That is slower, heavier work and costs more, but it lasts; filling a deep hollow with loose topsoil on the surface settles again within a couple of winters and you pay twice. Where the hollow traces something structural, such as an old trench or a suspect drain, we stop and discuss what is underneath before adding soil above it, because burying a developing problem is the one mistake this job cannot afford.
Aftercare that keeps it level
A freshly levelled lawn needs watering in dry spells while it re-roots, keeping off it until it has knit, and mowing with the blades high for the first few cuts. Longer term, the habits that made it uneven are worth breaking: vary the mowing direction so wheels do not groove the same lines, clear molehills properly when they appear rather than flattening them, and aerate the lawn every year or two so water moves through the soil instead of carving channels across it.

You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before we start, with topdressing, soil or turf quoted separately.

You approve, we work

An uneven lawn is more than an eyesore — every mower blade catches on the high spots, every low spot turns to mud in wet weather, and the garden becomes a place to walk carefully rather than enjoy. Levelling it properly is satisfying work, but it starts with understanding why the ground moved in the first place, or the bumps simply come back.
What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about uneven lawn surface
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I level a bumpy lawn myself?
Shallow, gentle unevenness is a realistic DIY job — a bag of sandy topdressing, a rake and a still afternoon in the growing season will make real progress. Deep hollows, structural bumps and whole-lawn regrading are heavier work where the common mistake is filling with loose soil that settles again within a couple of winters. If hollows keep reappearing, there is usually a reason worth finding first.
What do you check before levelling a lawn?
We map where the high and low spots are and look for patterns — worn routes, old features, drainage lines — check how deep the variations run, lift the turf to see what lies beneath, and confirm water drains where it should. If a hollow seems to be getting deeper, we investigate what is underneath before putting soil over it.
Is an uneven lawn anything more than a cosmetic problem?
It can be. High spots scalp every time you mow and weaken the grass, hollows hold water and turn to mud and moss, and bumpy ground is a genuine trip hazard for children, older people and anyone carrying a tray of drinks. A sunken line that keeps deepening can even point to a problem with a buried pipe, which is why we check before levelling.
How long does a properly levelled lawn take to settle in?
Topdressed areas green up through the dressing within a few weeks in the growing season, and relaid turf re-knits in a fortnight or so if it is kept watered. We do deep hollows in stages rather than burying the grass all at once, so a very uneven lawn may see us two or three seasons running — but each stage is finished ground you can use.
How much does lawn levelling cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before we start, and materials such as topdressing, soil or replacement turf are quoted separately, so shallow and deep work are each priced on their own merits.
