Rot is the natural end of untreated or aging timber outdoors, but it does not spread evenly, and that matters enormously for what a rotten fence actually needs. Understanding where the rot is — and where it is not — is the difference between a targeted repair and an expensive rebuild you did not need.

How Rot Starts and Spreads

Rot begins where moisture lingers: the ground-level zone of posts, the end grain of boards, joints where water sits, and anywhere soil or planting is banked against the timber. Fence panels rot from the bottom rail upward if there is no gravel board lifting them clear of the damp ground. Timber left untreated drinks rain through end grain fastest, so board ends and cut joints go first. Shade and poor airflow keep timber damp; a fence against dense planting rots years faster than one in open sun. The rot's geography matters: posts at ground level, panel bottom rails, and gravel boards are the classic trouble spots, while upper panels often remain sound far longer.

How We Assess the Extent

We probe every post at ground level, check panel bottom rails, gravel boards and fixings, and map which parts of the run are sound and which are not. The honest answer is often mixed: sound panels between failed posts, or a gravel board worth replacing while the panel above it has years left. Because posts, panels and gravel boards are separate components, we assess and quote them separately — so you are not paying to replace timber that still has life in it. Everything is explained plainly, and the full cost is quoted and approved before we start, with parts quoted separately from labour.

Repair and Replacement Options

Isolated rotten components get replaced: a post here, a gravel board there, the occasional panel whose bottom rail has gone. Where rot has taken out most posts along a run, the honest conversation is about whether rebuilding sections makes more sense — and at that scale, the work becomes a quoted project after the survey. If a section is being rebuilt, new posts mean digging near the boundary, and boundary lines often carry pipes, cables and drains. We locate carefully and use detectors where appropriate, but no scan guarantees what is below, and we ask that your utilities' plans are available — that is part of a safe dig approach and it is the customer's responsibility to provide them. Timber replacements are treated timber, set and detailed so water does not sit where it rots fastest.

Slowing Rot in What Remains

The sound parts of a fence can be kept sound for years with simple measures: keep soil, mulch and dense planting off the timber; make sure cut ends and saw marks are treated; make sure gravel boards are doing their job of lifting panels clear of the ground; and treat the timber every couple of years. Rot that is caught early is a component; rot that is ignored for years is a rebuild.

When to Call Us

Call when posts feel soft at the base, when panel bottom rails are crumbling, when boards have gone spongy at the ends, or when you are not sure whether the fence is worth repairing at all — an honest assessment is exactly what the visit provides. When booking, tell us roughly the length of the run, whether posts are timber or concrete, and whether any parts look worse than others.

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before we start, and timber and parts are quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Rot in a fence spreads at different speeds through different parts, and a run that looks tired may be mostly sound while a couple of posts are past saving. Our visit maps the rot honestly, explains what can stay and what must go, and quotes the work for your approval before we start.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about rotten wooden fence

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I deal with a rotten fence myself?

Replacing a single panel or gravel board is realistic DIY, and treating sound timber is always worthwhile. The judgement call — how far rot has spread into a post below ground, and whether a component is worth saving — is harder than it looks, because rot hides. If several parts of the run look soft, an assessment tells you what actually needs replacing.

What do you check when assessing rot?

Every post at ground level, panel bottom rails, gravel boards, joints and end grain, and the fixings. We map the run into what is sound and what is not, and assess posts, panels and gravel boards as separate components. You get a plain explanation of the extent before anything is quoted.

Is my rotten fence dangerous or just unsightly?

It can become dangerous when rot has taken out a post carrying load — a failing post under wind loading can bring panels down without much warning, and timber with advanced rot is weak under hand pressure too. If posts are soft or the run is leaning, treat it as a make-safe matter, not just an appearance issue.

Will you replace the whole fence or only the rotten parts?

Only what has actually failed, unless the survey shows the run is beyond economic repair — and we will tell you which it is. Because posts, panels and gravel boards are assessed separately, a run with sound panels between failed posts gets new posts and keeps its panels. That targeted approach is usually far cheaper than a blanket rebuild.

How is rot repair priced?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, with timber and parts quoted separately from labour. A larger rebuild would be surveyed and quoted as a project first.
