Storms throw wind-driven rain, flying debris and sudden temperature swings at your home, and walls take much of it. Some damage is obvious — render torn off, a fence panel through a wall, masonry displaced. Some hides behind what looks like a small crack until the next wet week stains the ceiling inside. This page explains what we do after a storm, what you can safely do yourself before we arrive, and how the repair proceeds.
What storms do to walls
Driving rain forces water through joints, seals and cracks that shrug off normal weather — walls that have been fine for years can leak after one serious storm. Gales dislodge render, copings and loose brickwork, especially where frost or age has already weakened the bond. Flying debris chips masonry and punctures render. Lightning is rare but devastating when it strikes. And the aftermath matters too: blocked gutters from storm debris overflow and soak walls for weeks afterwards, turning one storm's damage into a lingering damp problem.
First aid you can do safely
Safety comes before property. Stay away from anything loose, leaning or hanging at height — masonry and render sheets fall without warning. If water is coming in, contain it: buckets, towels, and moving valuables and furniture clear of the affected area. Do not touch electrical sockets, switches or appliances in wet areas, and if you are in any doubt about electrics, turn the circuit off at the consumer unit and leave it off until checked. Photograph the damage for insurance purposes — dated photos of every affected face are worth more than a hundred words later. Don't climb ladders to inspect roofs or high walls in the aftermath; that is when accidents happen, and we have the access equipment to look properly.
What we do on the visit
We assess the whole affected area, not just the obvious damage: walls, render, joints, sills, frames, gutters and downpipes. Anything loose or at risk of falling is secured or carefully removed so the area is safe for you and your family. Where water is getting in, temporary cover such as sheeting can be an honest interim while a permanent repair is quoted and scheduled — it keeps the weather out without pretending to be the fix. We check inside too, because storm damage that shows indoors tells us where the water path runs.
Then we give you a clear account of what we found: what needs urgent attention, what can wait, and what the permanent repair involves. That repair is fully quoted for your approval before it starts. If the damage involves structural masonry — displaced or cracked load-bearing brickwork — we make safe and refer you to a structural engineer rather than improvise, and we will explain why.
Repairs and insurance
We are happy to work from an insurer's instruction or alongside your claim, and our written assessments and photographs are structured to be useful evidence. Repairs range from repointing and render reinstatement to replacing damaged masonry, sills and seals. Where the storm revealed an underlying weakness — porous mortar, aging render — we will say so, because a like-for-like patch on a failing wall is money spent twice.
Weather and honest limits
Post-storm work is scheduled around conditions: temporary cover goes up quickly, permanent render and masonry repairs need dry, frost-free weather and may wait for it. We cannot guarantee that a repaired wall will withstand an identical future storm — but a properly repaired wall should handle the ordinary weather that follows.
Booking after a storm
Book through maintenance-men.com or by phone. You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, with parts and materials quoted separately. Tell us the nature of the damage, whether water is entering, and whether anything is hanging loose — that lets us prioritise the visit properly.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about storm damage to walls
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
What should I do myself before you arrive after a storm?
Keep clear of anything loose at height, contain any water coming in with buckets and towels, move valuables away from wet areas, and don't touch electrics in damp spaces. Photograph everything from the ground for insurance. Don't climb ladders to inspect damage — loose masonry and wet surfaces make that genuinely dangerous, and we will assess it with proper access.
What do you check after storm damage to a wall?
We assess the whole affected elevation — masonry, render, joints, sills, frames, gutters and downpipes — looking for damage that isn't obvious at first glance. Anything at risk of falling is secured or removed as a first step, and we check inside for signs of water ingress. You get a written account of what needs urgent work and what can wait.
Is storm-damaged wall dangerous to be around?
It can be — loose render and displaced masonry fall without warning, especially in aftershocks of wind or frost. Treat any leaning, cracked or hanging material as unsafe until someone has looked at it, and keep people away from directly beneath it. We make the area safe as the first task on our visit, and if the damage is structural we refer to an engineer.
Can you cover the damaged area temporarily while I sort out insurance?
Yes — temporary cover such as sheeting is an honest interim measure we can fit to keep water out while a permanent repair is quoted and scheduled. It protects the wall in the short term but is not the repair itself, and we will be clear about that. The permanent work is quoted and approved before it starts, whether or not an insurer is involved.
How is storm damage repair charged?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the repair work is quoted and approved before we start, with parts and materials quoted separately. Our written assessment and photographs are structured so they are useful for an insurance claim if you make one.
