A crack in a wall is information. The width, direction, depth and location all tell a story, and the right repair depends on reading that story before reaching for filler. Most small wall cracks are harmless shrinkage or seasonal movement; a smaller number signal structural movement and need an engineer's assessment. This page explains the difference, how we assess a crack, and what the repair involves when it is safe to proceed.
Cosmetic cracks and movement cracks
Cosmetic cracks are usually fine, shallow and stable. They run randomly across render or plaster, or follow the joint between two materials, and often open slightly in dry weather then close again when the wall absorbs moisture. They are caused by ordinary drying and seasonal movement, not a failing building. Their repair is straightforward and worthwhile: it keeps water out, restores the appearance, and stops frost enlarging a small flaw.
Cracks that deserve an engineer's attention are different. They are wider than a few millimetres, taper from thick to thin, run diagonally from window or door openings, step through mortar joints in the brickwork, appear on both sides of the wall at the same position, or grow noticeably over time. They may come with sticking doors, sloping floors or a bowing wall. Those patterns suggest the structure has moved, and the responsible next step is a structural engineer — not us filling the crack and hoping.
How we assess before repairing
We look at every crack on the affected area, measuring width and noting direction, length, depth and material. We check whether it is only in the render or passes through the brickwork, and compare with the inside face where accessible. We look for the causes: failed gutters, poor drainage, trees close to the wall, a raised path bridging the damp course. We ask how long it has been there and whether it changes with seasons. That history often resolves uncertainty better than a single photograph.
If the crack looks cosmetic and stable, we explain the repair and quote it. If it looks like movement, we make the area safe, document what we find, and refer you to a structural engineer. Where uncertainty remains, monitoring with a simple gauge over several months gives a reliable answer before a cosmetic patch is committed.
The repair
Fine cracks in render are raked out to a clean edge, dusted and filled with a flexible exterior filler or compatible repair mortar, then textured to match the surrounding finish. Cracked mortar joints are raked out to a suitable depth and repointed with mortar chosen for the wall's age and type — lime mortar for many older solid walls, not hard cement. Wider stable cracks in render may need mesh reinforcement across the repair to spread movement and reduce re-cracking. The repair is finished to blend with the existing wall, with the understanding that new material may look slightly different from weathered surfaces.
Weather, limits and aftercare
The work needs dry weather and frost-free curing, so we schedule around conditions and tell you if the forecast means delaying. No crack repair can guarantee that a moving building will never crack again; stable cracks can reopen seasonally, and we will explain that honestly. After repair, inspect the area each spring and tell us if it widens or changes — a changed pattern matters more than an old stable line.
Keep gutters in order so water doesn't attack the same area, and trim vegetation so the wall dries properly.

A crack in an outside wall is easy to notice and hard to interpret — it may be a harmless hairline or an early sign of movement. Our visit checks what the pattern really means, recommends an engineer if structural movement is suspected, and repairs stable cosmetic cracks with care.
What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about wall crack repair
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I fill a wall crack myself?
A fine, shallow and stable crack in render is reasonable DIY with a flexible exterior filler, provided you can reach it safely. Don't fill a crack that is wide, stepped, diagonal, growing or visible inside and out — those patterns need assessment first, and filling them hides useful evidence. If in doubt, have us look before the filler comes out.
What do you check before repairing a wall crack?
We measure the width, length and direction, check whether the crack is in the surface or through the masonry, compare inside and outside, and look for causes such as leaking gutters or poor drainage. We ask how it has changed over time, because that history is important. Cosmetic cracks get a repair quote; movement cracks get an engineer referral.
Do you repair structural cracks?
We don't carry out structural repairs based on our own judgment. If the crack is large, stepped, growing or accompanied by bowing, we make the area safe, document what we find and refer you to a structural engineer. Once their report has specified the structural work, we can quote for suitable making-good and finish repairs afterwards.
Will a wall crack stay fixed after you repair it?
A stable cosmetic crack has a good chance of staying neat, particularly when we use flexible materials and correct the source of water, but no repair can guarantee against future cracking. Walls move seasonally and sometimes reopen along old lines. We explain what to expect and ask you to watch for any change in width or pattern after the work.
How is wall crack repair priced?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, with parts and materials quoted separately. If the crack needs a structural engineer, that assessment is a separate service and we explain the referral before proceeding.
