Armrests are among the most-used and least-inspected parts of a wheelchair. They take weight every time someone pushes up out of the chair, they get leaned on, grabbed during transfers, used as handles when the chair is lifted into a car, and bumped through doorways. All of that adds up to wear that creeps up quietly: padding that has flattened to nothing, arm pads that have split, mounts that have developed play, latches that no longer lock positively. This page covers what wears out, why it matters, and what a proper replacement involves.

What wears out on armrests

The arm pads themselves go first: foam compresses, vinyl splits and peels, and a pad that has lost its cushioning passes pressure straight through to the arm, which matters enormously if the armrests are used for hours a day. The tubes and frames beneath can bend from someone pushing up on them repeatedly or from the chair being lifted by them. Mounts and sockets develop play as their fixings and holes wear. Flip-up and detachable mechanisms wear in their latches, so the armrest rattles, will not stay up, or will not stay down. And fixings simply work loose with vibration.

A point worth knowing: armrests are also transfer equipment. Many people use them to push up from, or to steady themselves while moving in and out of the chair. An armrest with play in its mount, or a split tube, can fail under exactly that load — which is why we treat them as a safety fitting rather than a comfort fitting.

How we assess and replace

We examine the arm pads, tubes, mounts, latches and fixings, and load each armrest the way daily use loads it — downward pressure, sideways pressure, the push-up force of a transfer. We check the mount points on the frame or seat, because a worn mount makes a new armrest rattle just like an old one. Then we give you an honest verdict: what can be tightened or refitted, and what has worn beyond that.

Replacement armrests are fitted with correctly matched parts — height, width, pad type and mounting style vary between models, and an armrest that is the right shape but the wrong fitting is worse than none. We fit manufacturer-approved parts where they are specified, secure every fixing properly, and then test the result under real load: weight on the pad, pressure on the tubes, the flip-up mechanism cycled. We will not hand back armrests we have not leaned on ourselves.

What you can do yourself

Tightening visible fixings is reasonable DIY if your manual covers it, and replacing a slide-on arm pad cushion is often a straightforward user job. What we would steer you away from is taping a split pad as a long-term solution, using an armrest with play in its mount for transfers, or improvising a replacement from other furniture. If the armrest is used for transfers at all, it is worth having it right.

When armrests point elsewhere

If both armrests are loose in the same way, or if the mount points on the seat or frame are worn or damaged, the armrests are the symptom and the mount is the problem — we will diagnose that rather than fit new armrests onto a tired mount. If a crack is visible in the seat structure near an armrest mount, tell us when you book, because that becomes a structural assessment.

Aftercare

Check the armrests for play when you check the rest of the chair's fixings — a few seconds each week catches looseness early. Avoid lifting the chair by the armrests unless the design explicitly allows it, and replace split pads promptly; a pad is a small part, but the comfort difference is daily and obvious.

Booking

Tell us the make and model of the chair, which armrest is affected, and what is wrong — loose, rattling, split pad, will not lock, bent. Mention if the armrests are used for transfers, as that affects the standard we hold them to. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is hourly at a rate depending on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost including parts is quoted and approved before work begins.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Armrests do quiet work all day — supporting arms during use, taking weight during transfers, doubling as push handles. When they wear, crack or loosen, they stop doing that work safely. We assess the armrests and their mounts, replace what is worn with the right parts, and leave you with armrests you can lean on with confidence.

What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service

4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews

Proper job, no upselling

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes

Fine in the end

The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Job: Stair Lift Service

Would use again

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about armrest replacement

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I replace wheelchair armrest pads myself?

Often yes — slide-on or Velcro-style pads are a straightforward user replacement, and tightening visible fixings is reasonable DIY if your manual covers it. Full armrest replacement is better done properly, because mounting styles and sizes vary between models and the fitting needs testing under load.

What do you check during an armrest replacement?

The pads, tubes, mounts, latches and fixings, loaded the way daily use loads them, plus the mount points on the seat or frame. We fit correctly matched manufacturer-approved parts, secure every fixing, and test the result under real load before handing the chair back.

Are armrests really a safety fitting?

They are if they are used for transfers — pushing up from the chair or steadying yourself in and out. An armrest with play in its mount or a split tube can fail under exactly that load. If you never use them that way, the concern is comfort rather than safety, but we treat them as safety fittings regardless.

My new armrests rattled soon after fitting elsewhere — why?

Usually the mount or fixing holes on the seat or frame have worn, so even new armrests have nothing solid to grip. We check the mounts as part of the job, and if that is the underlying problem we will tell you and quote for it rather than fit new armrests onto a tired mount.

How much will this cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the replacement, including the armrests themselves, is quoted and approved before work starts, with parts itemised separately.
