Choosing a thermostat is not only about matching a product description: wiring and heating controls vary from home to home. We assess the unit you provide and the existing arrangement before confirming whether installation is suitable.

What the symptoms can tell us

A new control must be compatible with the electrical supply, switching method, receiver arrangement and heating system. Some thermostats need a neutral conductor, a separate hub or a particular boiler interface, while an older control may use different terminals. Product claims such as smart or universal do not prove it will work with every boiler or control circuit. Installation can also be affected by the existing wiring condition and wall location. Maintenance Men does not promise compatibility with every boiler, nor does this thermostat installation include gas work or gas-boiler servicing. If you have not yet bought the unit, share its make and model and clear details of the current control before purchase where possible.

Checks during the visit

The engineer checks the customer-supplied thermostat's model and instructions alongside the existing control, wiring and heating arrangement. Voltage, terminal functions, switching type, receiver or hub requirements and available conductors are reviewed before removal or connection. The installation proceeds only if the unit is suitable and the work is safe and within scope. After fitting, the controls are checked for ordinary operation and a heating demand response as applicable. If the supplied product is incompatible, incomplete, damaged or requires an unsupported interface, the engineer explains the issue and does not force a connection. Any alteration beyond a straightforward fitting is discussed separately.

Repair choices and limits

Where compatibility is confirmed, the thermostat can be fitted and basic operation checked within the agreed visit. A need for new cabling, a different receiver, additional configuration or repair of existing faults may require a separate quote. The customer supplies the thermostat unless otherwise agreed; the unit and any accessories are not assumed to be included in labour. Manufacturer setup or account creation may be the customer's responsibility, especially for connected products. A successful control test does not guarantee Wi-Fi, app or cloud service performance. No installation can be promised before the actual wiring and control arrangement are checked.

Electrical and heating safety

A thermostat is a control device, not permission to work inside a boiler. Maintenance Men handles thermostat controls and suitable electrical or water-side heating faults within scope, but does not carry out gas work or open a gas boiler to adjust gas components. If symptoms suggest a combustion, flue or other gas-side safety concern, stop using the appliance if advised, leave it unopened, and arrange a Gas Safe registered engineer; an urgent gas smell is not a routine booking. Do not remove covers, probe live terminals or bypass a control. The engineer will explain any limit before proceeding.

Booking, price and next steps

The booking is for the stated diagnostic or defined thermostat visit, not an automatic promise that every fault can be fixed in one appointment. Booking fee is paid when booking; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost for the agreed work is quoted and you approve it before work starts. Any required replacement control, wiring materials or other parts can be identified and quoted separately; parts are not assumed to be included. Availability, compatibility and access may affect the next step. Book online and include the thermostat make and model, heating system type if known, symptoms, and anything already checked.

After the visit

Keep the old thermostat and any wiring labels or installation paperwork until the new unit is confirmed working. Do not remove the existing control to identify wires yourself, and do not rely on wire colour alone. Have the new product, required accessories and instructions available at the visit. After installation, retain the model details and use the maker's guide for routine settings. If heating behaves unexpectedly, stop changing installer settings and report the exact behaviour so it can be assessed safely.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

What our customers say about our heating & radiators service

5 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Fast, tidy and friendly

Booked the £220 booking-fee slot on Tuesday and got a message confirming the time the same morning. The cause was explained, the price agreed before any work started, and the job was done in about 46 minutes. Clean and tidy when they left.

Job: No Heating from Boiler

Turned up when they said

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 46 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Expansion Vessel Fault

Exactly what was quoted

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Airlock in Hot Water System

Questions people ask about thermostat installation

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I buy any thermostat marked universal?

No product label guarantees compatibility with every heating control. Share the make and model for a preliminary check, and have voltage, wiring and control requirements confirmed before fitting.

What is checked before installation?

The engineer compares the supplied unit with existing wiring, voltage, switching arrangement and heating controls, then checks normal response after fitting if suitable. Additional wiring or interface work is quoted separately.

Do you connect gas pipework or commission a gas boiler?

No. This is thermostat and suitable electrical control work only; Maintenance Men does not perform gas work or promise compatibility with every boiler. Gas-side matters are referred to a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Do I need to supply the thermostat?

Yes, unless another arrangement has been agreed. The unit and required accessories are not assumed to be included, and an incompatible product may not be fitted.

How is the installation cost agreed?

The booking fee is paid when booking, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted for approval before work starts; extra parts or materials are quoted separately.
