What Makes a Boiler Cut Out

Modern boilers shut down on their own terms rather than fail dangerously, and each lockout has a logic to it:

  • Low pressure — the commonest lockout of all. Pressure below the minimum makes the boiler refuse to run until repressurised. Behind it is nearly always a leak.
  • Overheat protection — if water cannot circulate fast enough to carry heat away, the boiler hits its temperature limit and trips. Causes include a failing pump, closed or stuck valves, airlocks and sludged pipework.
  • Flame failure lockout — the boiler lights, senses the flame is not right, and shuts down. This is a gas-side symptom — ignition electrode, gas valve or flue — and needs a Gas Safe engineer.
  • Thermostat and control faults — a thermostat dropping out intermittently, or wiring breaking down as components warm, produces cut-outs that look random.
  • Condensate blockage — a blocked condensate pipe trips many boilers in cold weather and resets when thawed, giving an on-off pattern across the winter.
  • Sensor faults — thermistors that read wrongly can make the boiler believe it is overheating or that flow is absent, cutting it out even when everything is healthy.

Why the Pattern Matters

When and how the boiler cuts out is the best clue we have. Shutting down five minutes after ignition with the radiators cold suggests circulation or overheat. Locking out on every cold morning and resetting fine by afternoon suggests the condensate pipe. Cutting out only when heating runs, but not hot water, points to a valve or zone issue. Refusing to start at all until topped up is pressure. Telling us the pattern when you book lets us target the diagnosis rather than work through everything in sequence.

How We Diagnose the Cause

We start with the gauge and the history, then verify the demand signal from the thermostat and controls is steady rather than intermittent. We watch the boiler through a full heating run, noting how long it runs and how hot it gets — an early overheat trip with cold radiators is a circulation diagnosis in itself. We test the pump, check motorised valves are opening properly, look for air and sludge, and inspect the condensate path in winter. Sensors and accessible electrical components are tested with instruments. Throughout we stay on the water and electrical side and never open the casing to the gas side.

What We Can Put Right

Most repeated cut-outs are curable without gas work. We repressurise systems after locating and repairing leaks, replace failing pumps, free or replace stuck motorised valves, clear airlocks, power-flush sludged systems that choke circulation, clear and properly insulate condensate runs, and replace faulty thermostats, sensors and wiring. Where our tests show the boiler is locking out on flame failure or another gas-side limit, we stop, explain our findings and recommend one of the trusted Gas Safe registered engineers we work closely with. That referral comes with a written summary of everything we have already ruled out.

Prevention Once It Is Fixed

A boiler that locks out repeatedly is usually telling you about a system problem rather than a boiler problem. Keeping pressure stable, inhibitor topped up, the condensate run insulated and controls in good order prevents most of the lockout cycle recurring. If your boiler is older and cutting out more each season, we will give you an honest view on whether repairs remain sensible compared with replacement — and note that any gas boiler replacement itself is Gas Safe work we refer out.

Booking the Diagnosis

Contact us with your boiler's make and model, how long it runs before cutting out, whether any error code appears, and the current pressure reading. Same-day visits may be available when our diary allows, though we never promise one. A booking fee is paid when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate depending on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved before we start. Parts are quoted separately. We cover the West Midlands.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A boiler that fires up and then shuts itself down — sometimes repeatedly, sometimes at random — is usually protecting itself from something. Lockouts are the boiler's way of saying a limit has been reached: pressure, temperature, circulation or a component fault. We will find which limit is being hit, repair the water-side and electrical causes, and refer you to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer if the evidence points into the gas side.

What our customers say about our heating & radiators service

5 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Fast, tidy and friendly

Booked the £220 booking-fee slot on Tuesday and got a message confirming the time the same morning. The cause was explained, the price agreed before any work started, and the job was done in about 46 minutes. Clean and tidy when they left.

Job: No Heating from Boiler

Turned up when they said

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 46 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Expansion Vessel Fault

Exactly what was quoted

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Airlock in Hot Water System

Questions people ask about boiler keeps switching off

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is it dangerous to keep restarting a boiler that keeps cutting out?

The boiler is cutting out to protect itself, so resetting it will not cause harm in itself — but repeatedly resetting without fixing the cause means the underlying problem continues, and some causes get worse with each cycle. If you ever smell gas, stop and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside the property.

Why does my boiler run for a few minutes then shut down?

That short-run pattern usually means the boiler is reaching its overheat limit because water is not circulating fast enough — a failing pump, a stuck valve, air or sludge in the system. It can also be a mis-reading sensor. We watch a full heating run to see exactly when and why it trips.

What can you repair, and what needs a Gas Safe engineer?

Pressure faults and leaks, pumps, valves, airlocks, sludge, condensate blockages, thermostats, sensors and wiring are all within our scope. Flame failure, gas valves, burners and flues are not, because we are not Gas Safe registered and never carry out gas work; there we diagnose within safe limits, explain what we found and refer you to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer we work closely with.

The boiler cuts out more in freezing weather — why?

A frozen condensate pipe is the classic winter cause, followed by pressure dropping in a contracting system. Thawing a condensate pipe gently with warm water is safe, and we can fit proper insulation and support so the fault stops returning every cold snap.

How is this kind of fault priced?

A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of diagnosis and repair is quoted and approved by you before work starts. Parts and materials are identified and quoted separately, and if a Gas Safe referral turns out to be needed we tell you before you commit.
