Why splashback edges matter
A splashback is judged on its edges. The joint where it meets the worktop, the line along the wall above it, and the verticals at each end are the details that either make the installation look finished or betray it. They are functional too: caulk along those edges stops water, steam and grease getting behind the glass, tile or acrylic and staining the wall or lifting the adhesive holding the splashback on. Caulk dries out and cracks with the seasons — walls and worktops expand and contract at different rates, and a rigid bead of old caulk eventually gives way.
What we check first
We look at how the splashback itself is sitting before any caulk goes on. A splashback that has come loose, is proud of the wall, or moves when touched needs fixing properly — caulking a loose splashback seals nothing and the gap will reopen. We check the wall behind the edges for staining or damp, particularly behind a kitchen splashback where cooking steam collects, and we look at the surface condition: glossy glass and glazed tile need different treatment to porous surfaces for sealant to bond. If the splashback needs refixing or the wall behind is damaged, we discuss that before starting rather than sealing over it.
Cutting out the old line
Old caulk is removed completely along every edge being renewed. Remnants of a previous bead stop the new line bonding and show through as a ragged edge no amount of new caulk can hide. We cut the old material back, lift it out, clean residue from glass or tile without scratching the surface, and make sure the joint is dry. Preparation is what separates a crisp line from a smeared one, and it gets the larger share of the time.
Choosing the finish
The right product depends on the joint and the look you want. Around a kitchen splashback where water and grease collect, a quality silicone gives a durable, wipe-clean line. Where the caulk will be painted — common along a painted wall above a splashback — a flexible decorators' caulk that takes paint may be the better finish, and that is agreed with you beforehand. Colour matters too: clear, white or a matched tone. If you have a preference or a tube of your own, tell us at booking; materials are identified and quoted separately from the labour.
Tooling for a clean result
A good caulk line is as much about technique as product: an even bead drawn along the joint in one pass, then tooled to a consistent concave finish that meets both surfaces cleanly. Masking can be used where a razor-sharp edge is wanted, and the reveal — peeling tape while the caulk is still fresh — is the moment a splashback's edges look finished. We take the time to do this properly rather than fill and smear, because the eye finds every wavering line across a glossy surface.
Cure and aftercare
Caulk and silicone need their cure time before they are wiped or splashed — hours at minimum, per the product instructions. We tell you when the splashback can go back into daily use and how to clean along the line: non-abrasive cleaners and a soft cloth keep the bead intact and looking new for years longer. If the caulk is to be painted, we will say when it is ready to take paint.
What caulking does not cover
Caulking is a finishing and sealing job, not a repair. It will not hold a loose splashback, fix a damaged wall behind it, or remedy a leak from plumbing or from water already inside the wall. Nor is it a watertight guarantee — it is a flexible joint that is maintained over time. If the job needs a fixer, a plasterer or a plumber, we will say so plainly and refer the work rather than caulk over a problem.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A splashback does two jobs: it protects the wall from splashes and it finishes the look of a kitchen or bathroom. Both depend on the edges. When the caulk along the top and sides cracks, gaps open that let water behind the splashback and make an otherwise smart installation look unfinished. We remove the old caulk, clean the edges and apply a fresh, even line.

Questions people ask about splashback caulking
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is splashback caulking something I could do myself?
It is approachable, and a steady hand with masking tape can produce a decent line on a short run. The parts that trip people up are stripping the old caulk fully, choosing a product that bonds to glass or tile, and getting a consistent bead across a long glossy edge — where every wobble shows. We bring the right product and the practice.
What do you check before caulking a splashback?
We check that the splashback itself is secure and sitting flush, because a bead on a loose panel will not last. We look at the wall behind the edges for staining or damp, and at the surface finish, since glossy glass and glazed tile need different treatment for sealant to bond. Anything needing refixing or repair is raised before we seal.
My splashback is loose at one corner — will caulk hold it?
No — caulk is a seal, not an adhesive fixing, and a bead on a moving panel will crack and reopen. The corner should be refixed properly first, which we can discuss and agree as part of the scope, or refer if it needs more than a handyman job. Once the panel is solid, the caulk line has something stable to span.
Can the caulk be painted to match my wall?
Yes — where the joint will be painted, we use a flexible decorators' caulk that accepts emulsion, and we tell you when it is ready for paint. Note that the painting itself may not be included in the visit unless it is agreed at booking. For wet kitchen joints we would normally use silicone instead, which stays as applied.
How is splashback caulking priced?
A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and agreed before work starts. Sealant or caulk is identified and quoted separately from the labour.
