The precision job in wardrobe assembly
A sliding wardrobe lives or dies by two things: level and alignment. The doors ride on tracks that must sit perfectly level and parallel, or they grind, jump or drift open on their own; the frame must stand plumb in a room whose walls and floors are rarely either. That is why sliding wardrobes take longer than hinged ones and reward a careful hand — it is less about lifting and more about millimetres, checked repeatedly.
What the job involves
Most kits combine a frame or carcass system, top and bottom tracks, two or three door panels — often one mirrored or glass — and internal fittings such as shelves, rails and drawers. The sequence matters: carcass square and fixed, floor track levelled with packers where the floor is uneven, top track aligned exactly parallel, then doors hung and their rollers adjusted for height and angle. Soft-close mechanisms and dampers are fitted per the maker's pattern, and door stops are set so panels cannot run off the track — the small details that keep the doors behaving for years.
Floors, walls and honest limits
Older houses have floors that fall away and walls that lean, and sliding doors expose every one of those flaws. We level and pack the tracks as the instructions allow, and we will tell you if a floor's slope is beyond what the kit tolerates — sometimes a small packing job solves it, and sometimes the honest answer is that a particular alcove will fight you and needs a different approach. Wall fixing of the carcass follows the same rules as any tall furniture: we assess the wall's construction, use appropriate anchors where a safe fixing is possible and agreed, and say plainly when a wall is not suitable rather than fit something we do not trust.
Mirror and glass panels
Many sliding wardrobes have a mirrored door, and it is usually the heaviest panel in the kit. Mirror and glass panels are lifted and hung with care — two hands and often two people — seated properly in their frames and never clamped hard. If a panel arrives cracked or chipped, we stop, assess what can reasonably be done, and identify the manufacturer replacement part rather than fit damaged glass. Nothing in a sliding wardrobe is worth improvising with.
Decisions to make before the build
Sliding wardrobes have a configuration you live with for years, so settle it early: which panel slides in front, which way the doors open across the opening, where the mirror sits, and how the interior is divided between hanging and shelving. Most kits allow some choice, and changing it afterwards means dismantling tracks and doors. If one door needs to pass an opening you use constantly — a doorway into an en suite, say — say so before we build, because door overlap is fixed once the tracks are set.

Aftercare and booking
Sliding doors settle. For the first few weeks, run the doors gently and tell us if one starts to grind or drift — roller adjustment is a quick fix while the problem is small. Keep the tracks free of grit, which is what most sliding problems actually are, and hoover them occasionally rather than sweep dust into them. To book, call Maintenance Men with the wardrobe type, the room and your access details: a booking fee is paid when you book, labour is hourly with the rate depending on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and agreed with you before work starts. Same-day may be available, and we are fully insured across the West Midlands.

Questions people ask about sliding wardrobe assembly
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is a sliding wardrobe a DIY job?
It is one of the harder kits to self-assemble: long, heavy panels, tracks that must be level and parallel to the millimetre, and rollers that need patient adjustment. The common DIY outcome is doors that work badly from day one and get worse. If you have a helper and a very level floor, it is possible; otherwise this is one assembly where experience earns its fee.
What do you inspect during a sliding wardrobe fit?
We check the kit against the manufacturer's parts list first, then assess the floor for level and the wall for fixing before anything is drilled. The carcass is built square and fixed, the tracks are set level and parallel, and each door is hung and roller-adjusted for height and angle. We finish by running the doors repeatedly and setting the stops so panels cannot leave the track.
My floor is uneven — can a sliding wardrobe still be fitted?
Usually, yes — sliding kits are designed to be packed level under the floor track, and we carry out that levelling as part of the fit. But there are honest limits: if the floor falls away more than the kit tolerates, the doors will never run well, and we will tell you that rather than fit something that fights the room. We assess before committing and agree the approach with you.
The sliding doors keep jumping the track — why?
Most often it is the rollers set to the wrong height or angle, the tracks out of level or parallel, or grit built up in the track. All three are fixable: rollers are adjusted, tracks re-levelled and cleaned, and the stops set so panels cannot lift off. If it keeps happening after that, we look at whether the floor or wall has moved the carcass out of true.
How much does sliding wardrobe fitting cost?
You pay a booking fee on booking, labour is charged hourly and the rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted for your approval before work starts. Sliding wardrobes simply take longer than hinged ones, which the quote reflects. If a manufacturer replacement part is needed, such as a door panel, it is identified and quoted separately.
