How doors actually fail
When a door is attacked, the lock is rarely the first thing to give. The usual sequence is shorter and less dramatic: the screws holding the strike plate or the hinges pull out of soft timber, the frame splits at its weakest point, or a worn cylinder gives way to sustained attack. That's why a door's security is a chain — the leaf, the frame, the hinges, the lock, the cylinder and the fixings all matter, and the weakest link sets the standard. Understanding that changes the whole conversation: the most valuable upgrade is often not a fancier lock but longer screws and a stronger plate in the right places.
What we assess
We look at the door the way an attacker would, minus the drama. Which lock or locks are fitted, and what condition are they in? How is the cylinder seated, and is it a type that stands up to the common attack methods? How long are the screws in the strike plate and the hinges — 13mm screws into a soft frame are a known weak point, while longer screws that reach the frame's structural timber make a real difference? Is the frame solid, or cracked, rotten or gap-filled? How does the door meet the frame — is there too much play? We also note what the door is: a uPVC panel door, a timber front door and a flat entrance door each have different weaknesses and different sensible upgrades.
The practical upgrades
The most common improvements are unglamorous and effective: replacing short fixings with appropriate longer screws in the strike plate and hinges so loads transfer into the frame's structure, fitting a stronger strike plate or a properly rated one where the door warrants it, replacing a worn or basic cylinder with a better-specified one suited to the door, upgrading a tired nightlatch or deadbolt, and adding hardware where the door's design allows it. For uPVC doors, the cylinder and handle furniture are often the practical focus. Everything we recommend is chosen to suit your specific door, and we'll explain why each item earns its place — if your door is already sound, we'll say that too rather than invent work.
What this service isn't
We're practical about the boundaries. This is hardware assessment and improvement, not a full professional security survey of your property — lighting, alarms, cameras and wider layout are separate fields, and we'll say when a specialist is the right person. We can't guarantee that any door will resist a determined, tool-carrying intruder; no honest trader can, and a claim like that should send you running. If the frame is structurally weak or rotten, fixing the hardware alone won't secure the door, and we'll explain what needs to happen first. And we don't recommend or fit anything whose purpose is to trap someone inside — escape in an emergency always comes first, especially on your main exit.
Choosing sensibly
Two questions are worth answering before we arrive. First, what are you protecting against — opportunist quick entry, which good hardware largely defeats, is a different threat from a planned, equipped attack, and honest advice differs accordingly. Second, what do your insurers require? Many policies specify lock standards for external doors, and if you're unsure what yours asks for, it's worth checking your policy before the visit so we can match hardware to it. Bring any questions about rented properties or shared entrances too — those change who decides what, and it's better to know before work is quoted.
Booking and cost
Tell us the door in question and roughly what's bothering you — an old lock, a flimsy feel, a recent incident nearby. You pay a booking fee on booking; labour is charged hourly, with the rate depending on how soon you need the visit; and after the assessment we quote the full cost of the recommended work, which you approve before anything starts. Hardware and materials are identified and quoted separately from the labour, item by item, so you can choose what's worth doing and skip what isn't.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Most forced entries don't defeat a good lock — they defeat the weak door around it: short screws, a flimsy strike plate, a cylinder that's past its best. We look at your door as a system, show you where it's genuinely weak, and quote practical hardware improvements that address what we find. No scare tactics, no overselling — just the honest state of your door and what can sensibly be done about it.

Questions people ask about weak door security
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I improve my door security myself?
Some of it, yes — swapping short strike-plate screws for longer ones that reach the frame's structure is a genuinely worthwhile DIY upgrade. But knowing which fixes matter for your specific door, fitting a new cylinder or lock correctly, and judging the frame's condition take experience. A wrong-fit cylinder on a front door is worse than the one it replaced.
What do you inspect during a security assessment?
We look at the locks and their condition, the cylinder and how it's seated, the strike plate and hinge fixings and their screw length, the state of the frame, and how the door sits in it. We then explain the weak points in order of real-world importance and quote for the improvements that matter. Nothing is installed until you've approved the plan and the cost.
Can you guarantee my door can't be forced?
No — and be suspicious of anyone who says otherwise. Good hardware and sound fixings make opportunistic entry far harder and slower, which is the realistic goal, but a determined attacker with tools is a different matter. What we can do is honestly explain where your door is weak, strengthen what can be strengthened, and tell you when a specialist security survey is the better next step.
The frame around my door is rotten — can hardware fix that?
Not by itself. Screws and strike plates only hold as well as the timber they bite into, so a weak or rotten frame undermines any upgrade fitted to it. We'll point that out during the assessment and explain what needs to happen first — frame repair or replacement may be the priority before new hardware, and we'd rather tell you that than fit parts into wood that can't hold them.
How is the work priced?
There's a booking fee paid on booking, and labour is charged hourly with the rate depending on how soon you need the visit. After assessing the door we quote the full cost of the recommended work, and you approve it before we start. Any locks, plates, cylinders or hardware are identified and quoted separately, item by item, so you decide what's worth having.
