First things first
A break-in leaves more than damage — it leaves a doorway that will not close and a home that does not feel safe. Before any repair: if the intruder may still be on the property, call the police. If the break-in has already happened, report it and get a crime reference number, and photograph the damage before anything is touched — insurers and the police often need it, and repair work destroys the evidence. Then call us, say the doorway is unsecured, and we will treat it with the urgency it deserves.
What forced entry damage looks like
The patterns are consistent. A frame split at the lock keep where the bolt or hook was forced back. A jamb kicked in at latch height. Hardware ripped out of the door, leaving torn mortises and splintered timber. A cylinder snapped or pulled. Panels or glazing broken. Hinges torn from a door that was forced on the hinge side rather than the lock side. Sometimes the door itself is fine and only the frame failed; sometimes the door is beyond saving. Knowing which is which drives everything that follows.
Making the doorway secure
The first priority is a secure doorway, quickly. Within handyman scope that means re-fitting or temporarily securing the door, boarding broken glazing, fitting temporary hardware, and getting the door to close and lock again. We are clear about what is a temporary measure and what is finished work, and nothing temporary leaves without a plan and a quote for the permanent repair. If you need somewhere to be while the work is done, tell us at booking so the timing works for you.
Repairing the damage
Once the doorway is secure, the repair can be done properly. Split frame sections are cut out and sound timber spliced in, with solid material behind the strike plate or keep — a keep screwed into filler will fail the same way the second time, so we make sure it bites into real timber. Torn mortises and damaged hardware areas are rebuilt, and failed locks, cylinders and handles are replaced with hardware suited to the door. Repaired areas are left ready for decoration, though painting itself is not included unless agreed. If your insurer specifies particular requirements — replacement rather than repair, or an approved locksmith standard — tell us before the repair is chosen.
When it is beyond a handyman repair
We are straightforward about scope. A jamb split for its full height, damage to the structural opening, the brickwork or the lintel, or a door wrecked beyond saving are jobs for a replacement door set or builder-level work, and we will say so plainly rather than attempt a repair that will not hold. Where replacement is needed, we secure the doorway in the meantime and quote the replacement separately, so you are never left choosing between an unsecured house and an unapproved cost.
Thinking about security afterwards
Once the doorway is sound, it is worth an honest look at why it failed — usually the weakest link, not the whole door. A discussion about better hardware, a chain or limiter, or upgraded cylinders is sensible once the structure is repaired properly. What we will not do is claim the repair makes the door more secure than it was before; if you want a proper assessment of the whole assembly, ask and we will inspect it and talk through options, including the ones outside our scope.
Booking
Tell us the doorway is unsecured when you call and we will prioritise it; same-day appointments may be available depending on when you book. A booking fee is paid when you reserve the slot, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved by you before work starts. If you have a crime reference number or insurer requirements, mention them at booking so the repair matches what is actually needed.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Questions people ask about forced door entry repair
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I repair the door frame myself after a break-in?
Small damage possibly, but forced-entry damage almost always involves the lock area, and a repair there has to restore solid timber behind the keep — filler will fail the same way the second time. There is also an insurance angle: repairing before photographing and reporting can cost you a claim. Get the break-in reported and photographed first.
What do you do on a forced entry repair?
First we make the doorway secure — re-fit or temporarily secure the door, board any broken glazing, and get it locking again. Then the proper repair: splicing sound timber into split frame sections, rebuilding torn mortises, and replacing failed locks, cylinders and hardware. We keep you informed about what is temporary and what is finished work.
When is the damage beyond a handyman repair?
A jamb split for its full height, damage to the structural opening, brickwork or lintel, or a door wrecked beyond saving — those need a replacement door set or builder-level work, and we will say so plainly. Where that happens we secure the doorway in the meantime and quote the replacement separately. We do not attempt repairs that will not hold.
What should I do before you arrive?
Report the break-in and get a crime reference number, and photograph the damage before anything is touched, as police and insurers often need it. Keep any broken parts, and check your policy for requirements about repair versus replacement. Tell us the doorway is unsecured when you book so we treat it with urgency.
How is forced entry repair priced?
You pay a booking fee when you reserve the slot, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved by you before work starts. Any replacement locks, hardware or a door set are identified and quoted separately.
