What Counts as an Exposed Live Wire
Any conductor carrying current that is not inside its proper insulation or enclosure is exposed — a cable with its outer sheath and coloured cores showing where plaster has come away, a socket missing its faceplate, a light fitting hanging with its connections visible, a chewed or crushed flex, or wiring left dangling from a half-finished job. Some of it looks alarming and some of it looks harmless, but you cannot tell by looking which parts are live, so every exposed conductor should be treated as though it is.
Why This Is Not a Wait-and-See Job
Exposed conductors deliver shock on contact and can arc to anything metal that comes near. The risk is not only to the person who touches them: metal pipework, radiators and structural steel can become live through contact, and a bare conductor that moves in a draught can short against something unexpected. This is also the fault most likely to be found by the wrong person first — a child's hand at socket height, a pet chewing, a householder reaching into a cupboard. Fast isolation and a proper repair close that window.
Make It Safe, Then Call Us
If you can reach the consumer unit without passing the exposed wiring, switch off the main switch — not just the socket — and keep the power off. If the wiring is between you and the unit, or you are unsure which switch to use, keep your distance instead; do not attempt to move, tape or cover the conductor. Keep children and pets out of the room, and if anyone has had a shock, however small it seemed, seek medical advice — electrical injuries are not always obvious at the time. Then book the earliest slot: same-day and emergency appointments are available.
How We Make It Safe Properly
The first job on arrival is isolation and testing — proving the conductor is dead before anyone works near it. From there the repair depends on what exposed it: replacing a run of cable whose sheath was damaged, refitting and reinstating a missing faceplate, remaking joints in a fitting that came apart, or enclosing wiring that previous work left open. Where the cable has been damaged rather than just uncovered, we replace the damaged section back to sound cable and remake every joint with proper connectors — never tape alone.
Checking the Wider Picture
An exposed wire is usually a symptom of something: an over-tight fixing, water ingress, rodent activity, poor earlier work, or an installation that has simply been disturbed. We look at the cause as well as the symptom, test the circuit for damage to insulation elsewhere, and check that the protective devices in your consumer unit would operate correctly if anything similar happened again. If the installation has issues beyond this one repair, you will hear about them plainly and be left to decide the priority.
When to Call Us
Call urgently for any conductor visible outside its insulation or enclosure, whether or not it appears to be working, and straight away if it is within reach of children or pets, near water, or sparking. Do not wait for the smell, the trip or the shock that confirms what you already suspect.
Book an Urgent Repair Today
An exposed live wire is dangerous for exactly as long as it stays exposed, and that is a problem with a short, inexpensive solution when it is handled promptly. Call us or book online and we will send a qualified electrician on the earliest available slot to make it safe, fix it properly, and leave you certain it cannot happen again.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Live conductors that should be safely inside a socket, a light fitting, a wall or a length of cable have been left out in the open — this is the one electrical fault where the right first move matters more than anything else. Keep everyone, especially children and pets, well away from the exposed part, switch the power off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely, and call us for an urgent visit. Our electricians make the area safe, repair the damaged section properly, and check nothing nearby has been affected.
What our customers say about our electrical service
4.6 out of 5 from 11 reviews
Does what it says on the tin
No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.
Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights
Turned up when they said
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: Appliance Causing Power Trip

Questions people ask about exposed live wires
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
How much does an emergency call-out for exposed wires cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, then labour by the hour at a rate that rises with urgency — a same-day or emergency slot costs more per hour than a routine appointment. The full repair is quoted and approved before we carry out any of the work itself.
Can I just tape over the exposed part until it's fixed?
Please do not. Insulation tape on an unknown conductor leaves the fault live and hides the danger from the next person who opens it, and reaching in to apply it is itself the shock risk. Isolate at the consumer unit if you can and leave the wire exactly as it is for us.
What will the electrician do first on arrival?
Isolate and test. The engineer proves the conductor is dead with proper testing equipment before touching anything, then traces why it became exposed — the damaged section, what caused it, and whether the circuit has further damage. Only then is a repair quoted and carried out with your approval.
What should I do if someone has already had a shock?
Keep them still and get medical advice promptly, even if they seem fine — electric shocks can cause injuries that are not immediately obvious. If they are unconscious or not breathing normally, call 999 first. Then isolate the power at the consumer unit and book us to repair the cause.
Will the whole house need rewiring if a wire is exposed?
Almost never. Exposure usually has a local cause — physical damage, a missing faceplate, disturbed joints — and the repair is generally limited to that section of cable or fitting. If testing reveals a wider problem with the installation's age or condition, we will explain exactly what we found and let you decide what to do.
