What a blown fuse means

A fuse contains a link designed to break when current exceeds a safe level. That interruption can result from an overloaded circuit, a short circuit, a faulty appliance or a wiring problem. In older fuse boards, a fuse wire may have melted; modern consumer units more commonly use resettable circuit breakers. Do not confuse a fuse that has operated with a fuse that is simply the wrong type or rating. The circuit and its protection need to be checked before anything is replaced.

Avoid a quick but unsafe replacement

Using thicker fuse wire, wrapping foil around a fuse or fitting a higher-rated fuse can stop the protection from operating as intended. That can allow wiring to overheat. Even replacing like for like may not solve the problem if an appliance or cable fault remains. If there is a burning smell, heat, sparks or visible damage, leave the circuit off and keep clear. Do not open the fuse board or handle internal parts unless you are qualified to do that work.

Finding the reason it blew

The electrician identifies the affected fuse and the circuit it protects, then asks what was in use and whether there were recent changes or damage. They inspect the fuse holder and connected circuit and carry out suitable tests to check for overloads, short circuits, appliance faults or damaged wiring. The fuse itself may have failed, but that possibility is confirmed only after checking the circuit. We explain the result and quote the repair before starting chargeable work.

Restore protection, not just power

The repair may involve disconnecting a faulty appliance, repairing damaged wiring or connections, or fitting the correct replacement fuse or protective device. The selected rating must suit the circuit; increasing it to prevent another trip is not a safe shortcut. Once the cause has been addressed, the electrician checks the relevant circuit and protection before power is restored. If the fault cannot be safely resolved in one visit, the affected circuit stays isolated and the next steps are explained.

If the fuse operates again

A second failure after replacement is a sign to stop and investigate rather than keep fitting new fuses. Record what was running, and leave the circuit off if it has operated again. Do not put a damaged or repeatedly failing appliance back into service. New fuse boards and old fuse boards can use different protective arrangements, so the electrician can also advise if the existing equipment needs a wider assessment.

What the visit involves

The electrician checks which fuse has failed, what the circuit supplies and what was running when power was lost. They inspect the fuse and circuit and test for the cause before selecting a suitable repair. A replacement fuse is fitted only when its rating is right for the circuit and the underlying fault has been considered. The work and price are agreed before chargeable repairs begin.

Aftercare and safety

Never bridge a fuse with foil or fit a higher-rated fuse to keep power on. If a fuse fails again, leave the circuit off. Burning odour, heat, sparks or visible damage calls for urgent help and distance from the fuse board.

Book your electrical visit

Book an inspection if a fuse has blown, especially if it has happened before. Leave the affected circuit off until the cause and correct protection are confirmed.

Further details for your electrician

Older fuse boards can contain fuse wire rather than the resettable switches found in many newer units. The correct replacement depends on the board and circuit; a modern breaker should not be improvised into an incompatible enclosure. The electrician checks the holder and any signs of heat damage as well as the fuse link. If the fuse has failed more than once, describe what was connected at each occurrence.

Does what it says on the tin

No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.

Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about blown fuse

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I replace the blown fuse myself?

Do not open a consumer unit or improvise with fuse wire, foil or a higher rating. An electrician can identify the correct protective device and check why it operated.

How will the electrician diagnose the problem?

The electrician checks the circuit and connected equipment, then uses appropriate tests to look for overload, short circuit, appliance or wiring faults. The fuse is not treated as the cause without those checks.

Is a blown fuse a serious safety issue?

It can be a protective response to a fault, so it needs attention before the circuit is used again. Heat, a burning smell, sparks or visible damage should be treated as urgent.

Can an appliance blow a fuse?

Yes. A faulty appliance can draw excessive current or create a short circuit. Testing helps determine whether the problem follows the appliance or is in the home wiring.

How is the work priced?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
