When the consumer unit trips partway through a wash – or the moment the machine starts – the fault is electrical, and it deserves a methodical response. Repeatedly resetting a tripped RCD to squeeze in another wash is the wrong instinct, because whatever is leaking current to earth will keep doing so, and electricity and water share this appliance closely. The reassuring part is that the usual culprits are well known and mostly testable within a single visit.
What makes a washer trip the electrics
The classic causes, in rough order of likelihood: a degraded heating element, whose insulation breaks down when hot and leaks to earth – this often trips only during the wash or when water heating begins; water ingress into wiring, connectors or the control board, often following a leak; a failing pump motor with moisture inside; a damaged mains filter or supply cord; and, less commonly, a control board fault. Which stage of the cycle the trip happens at is a genuinely useful clue. Trips during heating point to the element; trips when draining point towards the pump; trips immediately on power-up point to the supply side, filter or board. Fault patterns beat guesswork every time.
How we diagnose the fault
Safety comes first: the machine is isolated from the supply before any panel is opened, and we check the socket, plug and lead before the machine's internals. Then we test within electrical competence – the heating element's insulation, the pump and motor circuits, the mains filter, and the wiring and connectors for signs of water or heat damage. Where a recent leak is suspected, we trace its source too, because drying the machine without fixing the leak simply resets the clock. We note which cycle stage triggers the trip and use that to focus the testing. The outcome is a named failed component and an explanation you can follow.
Repairs and what to expect
A failing element is one of the most common and most economical repairs on a washing machine, with replacement elements available for most major makes. Pumps and mains filters are similarly replaceable. A water-damaged board is a more serious matter: board replacement is possible where parts exist, but for older machines we will give you an honest view on whether it is worthwhile. Any repair is quoted in full – labour and parts separately – and approved by you before it starts. Where the fault falls outside what we can safely establish, we will say so and recommend the right next step rather than guess.
Safety and what to stop doing
Do not keep resetting the trip to use the machine; a persistent earth fault is not something to live with in a water-connected appliance. Do not run the machine from an extension lead or try to isolate which part trips by unplugging things mid-cycle. If the machine is wet underneath, do not touch it or its socket; turn the supply off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely, and keep everyone away. Tell us about any leaks, burning smells or scorch marks when booking – they change what we check first.
Booking and information to give us
Call Maintenance Men or use the website form with the brand and model number, when exactly the trip occurs in the cycle, whether it trips the socket RCD or the main consumer unit, and any history of leaks. The booking fee is paid when you book, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before any work begins.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work

Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about washing machine power fault
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Why does the machine trip only when the water heats?
That pattern points strongly at the heating element. Element insulation commonly breaks down when the element gets hot, leaking current to earth and tripping the RCD, while cold cycles run normally. It is a common fault and usually an economical repair, confirmed by testing rather than assumed.
Is it dangerous to keep resetting the trip and running the machine?
Yes – do not do this. A persistent earth fault means current is escaping where it should not, in an appliance that mixes water and mains power. Each reset puts the fault back in play. Leave the machine off until it has been properly diagnosed.
What exactly gets tested during the visit?
With safe isolation, we test the socket and supply lead, the heating element's insulation, the pump and motor circuits, the mains filter, and the wiring and board for water or heat damage. Diagnosis is explained clearly and the repair quoted before anything is replaced.
My machine also leaks – are the two faults connected?
Often yes. Water reaching wiring, connectors or the control board is a classic cause of tripping. Tell us about the leak when booking so we can investigate both together; fixing the electrics without fixing the leak would only invite a repeat.
What does this repair cost?
There is a booking fee paid when you book and an hourly labour rate depending on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted before work starts and you approve it. Parts such as elements or pumps are identified during diagnosis and quoted separately.
