Vent installation is the part of a dryer setup most often done badly, usually because it is hidden behind the machine and nobody looks at it again. Foil flex duct crushed into a tight bend, a run that is far longer than the manufacturer allows, a flap painted shut, or a termination that discharges into a cavity all cause the same outcome: restricted airflow, longer cycles, overheating and a lint fire risk.

What a good vent run looks like

As short and straight as the property allows. Rigid or semi-rigid ducting rather than corrugated foil wherever possible, because smooth bore does not trap lint. Swept bends instead of tight elbows, and as few of them as possible. A termination with a flap that opens freely and closes when the machine stops, positioned so it discharges outdoors and not into a roof space, cavity or garage. Joints sealed with foil tape rather than screws that protrude into the airway.

What the visit covers

We assess the route and the termination, agree the ducting type and path with you, and fit the run using accessible fixings. We connect to the dryer outlet, check that the hose is not compressed behind the appliance, and confirm clearance so the machine can sit back without crushing the duct. We then run the dryer and check that the flap lifts and airflow at the outlet is adequate. Where the route needs a new hole through a wall, we will discuss that separately, since structural alteration is not part of a standard vent fit.

Limits we are clear about

We do not work at height on ladders or roofs to reach an inaccessible terminal, and we do not core through structural walls, lintels or cavity walls without agreeing the method first. If the only viable route runs through a listed or rendered wall, or above a safe working height, we will say so and explain the options rather than improvising. Condensing and heat-pump dryers do not need external venting at all, and we will tell you if a vent is unnecessary for your model.

Materials and cost

Ducting, clips, tape and a termination kit are materials that we identify and quote separately from labour. The type and quantity depend entirely on the route, so we will not give a materials figure before seeing it. You are welcome to supply your own kit if you prefer, as long as it is suitable for a dryer and the correct diameter for the appliance outlet.

Why it matters beyond performance

Lint is highly flammable and collects where airflow slows, which is exactly what a crushed or over-long duct creates. A vent that discharges into a loft or cavity deposits that lint inside the building fabric, where it is both a fire risk and a damp problem. If you have found lint around the outside terminal or the flap has stopped moving, the run needs attention.

After installation

Run a full load and check the flap opens during the cycle and closes afterwards. Feel for warm, moist air at the termination. Check behind the machine after a week to make sure the duct has not been pushed into a kink. Clean the filter every cycle, and have the run cleaned periodically, especially if it is longer than a metre or two.

Safety

Do not run the dryer with the vent disconnected, and do not tape the flap open. Both defeat the purpose of the installation. If you ever smell burning near the vent or see smoke, stop using the machine, isolate it only if the plug is safe to reach, and call 999 if there is an active fire.

Booking the vent work

Tell us the dryer model, whether it is vented or condensing, where the machine sits and where the outside wall is in relation to it. A photo of the space and the existing termination saves time. Mention any previous vent that has been removed or blocked, since the old route often dictates what is possible.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A dryer is only as good as the route its air takes out of the building. Poorly installed venting traps lint, crushes easily and turns a capable machine into a slow, hot one. This visit is about fitting the vent properly: correct ducting, sensible routing, a free-moving outside flap and airflow you can measure rather than assume.

Good job, slightly late

Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.

Job: Toaster Not Working

No mess left behind

Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about dryer vent installation

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I fit a vent kit myself?

A simple through-wall kit with an existing hole is within reach of a confident DIYer, but the route and termination matter more than the kit. Getting the diameter, length and bend count wrong causes the problems the vent was meant to solve.

What ducting do you use?

Rigid or semi-rigid ducting wherever the route allows, with swept bends and sealed joints. Corrugated foil hose is used only for short final connections where nothing else fits, because it traps lint and crushes easily.

Is a new hole through the wall included?

A standard vent fit connects to an existing opening. Making a new hole is separate work that we will discuss and quote for, and it depends on the wall construction and whether the position is safe and suitable.

My dryer is a heat pump model. Do I need a vent?

No. Condensing and heat-pump dryers recirculate air and collect moisture in a container or drain, so they do not need external venting. If someone has fitted a vent to one, it is unnecessary and possibly detrimental.

How is the work priced?

The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with ducting and termination materials identified and priced separately.
