A dryer that lights up but will not begin a cycle is sending you a mixed message: the board has power, the display works, but something in the start chain is refusing to let the drum turn. That chain runs from the start button or touch panel, through the door interlock, to the relay or triac that energises the motor. A break anywhere along it produces the same symptom, which is why pressing start harder or repeatedly makes no difference.
First, rule out the controls
Check that the child lock is not active, since a locked panel will accept your button press and quietly ignore it. Look for a delay-start setting that has been left on, and confirm the programme selector is on a real cycle rather than a pause or anti-crease position. On models with a touch panel, a dead patch on the glass can mean the start area itself has failed. If the door does not click shut with a firm push, the interlock will not authorise a start, and that is a different repair from a board fault.
What we test on the visit
We confirm the door switch state first, because it is the most common cause of a no-start on a machine that otherwise behaves normally. Then we test the start button or membrane for continuity, check the wiring to the board, and measure whether the motor relay is being commanded. On older machines we check the motor capacitor, which can fail in a way that leaves the motor humming without turning. On heat-pump models we also look at whether a previous fault has latched a protection mode that needs clearing before the machine will run.
Causes we see most often
A worn door catch that no longer presses the switch far enough, a failed interlock, a start membrane with a dead spot, a relay that clicks but does not close, a motor capacitor out of tolerance, and occasionally a board that has lost its output stage. We also find machines set to a timed programme with zero minutes, which looks like a fault and is simply a setting. Each of these has a different cost and a different repair route, so diagnosis comes first.
Repair or replace
Door catches, interlocks and capacitors are usually straightforward and inexpensive. A failed board on a modern heat-pump dryer can cost a significant share of the machine's value, and we will give you that comparison honestly rather than presenting a repair as the only option. Parts are matched to the model and serial number and quoted separately, and availability depends on the brand. If a part is on a long lead time we will tell you at the point of ordering, not after you have waited a fortnight.
Safety points
Do not hold the door switch closed with tape or a tool to force the machine to run. That defeats a safety device designed to stop the drum while the door is open, and it can also hide a fault that is getting worse. Do not attempt to bypass the start relay or bridge terminals on the board. If the machine hums without turning, stop pressing start, because a stalled motor draws heavy current and can damage windings or wiring.
After the repair
Run a short timed cycle with a light load and listen for the drum starting cleanly rather than labouring. Check the door still latches with a normal push and that the machine stops promptly when the door is opened mid-cycle. If the start feels inconsistent, tell us rather than waiting for it to fail completely, since an intermittent switch is easier and cheaper to deal with early.
How to book
Give us the brand, model, approximate age and the exact behaviour: lights on but no response, a click with no movement, or a hum that stops. Say whether the door needs an extra push to latch, because that single detail often identifies the fault before we arrive. Booking online takes a couple of minutes and lets you describe the symptom in your own words.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
The display is lit, the dial turns, the drum light comes on, and still nothing happens when you press start. That particular combination narrows things down considerably, and it is rarely the same fault as a machine with no power at all. The visit traces the start signal from the button through the interlock to the motor, so you get an answer rather than a guess.

Questions people ask about tumble dryer not starting cycle
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I just hold the door switch in to test it?
No. Bypassing the interlock defeats a safety device and can mislead you about the real fault. Check instead whether the door latches with a normal push and whether the child lock or a delay setting is active.
What will you check when you arrive?
We test the door interlock and catch, the start button or membrane, the wiring to the board, the motor relay and, where fitted, the motor capacitor. We then explain which part is stopping the cycle from beginning.
Is a dryer that won't start a safety concern?
It is mostly an inconvenience, but a machine that hums without turning can overheat its motor and wiring, so stop pressing start if you hear that. Never tape the door switch closed or bridge connections on the board.
Why does my dryer click but not start?
A click usually means the board is trying to energise the motor but the relay, capacitor or motor itself is not responding. That is a useful clue and one we can often confirm within the first part of the visit.
What does it cost to find out?
The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of diagnosis and any repair is quoted and approved by you before work starts, with parts priced separately once identified.
